Anyone care to join me in a 30 day walking challenge?

Got an email from My Fitness Plan this morning with a 30 Day Walking Challenge and I'm going to give it a go starting tomorrow. I'm rubbish at links on this iPad but if you google 30 day walking challenge quite a few come up - I'm doing the MFP one.

There are three different levels - I'm starting at the beginning as just getting over problems with my Achilles tendon.

Been feeling very unmotivated and down lately and hoping this will be do-able and get me back into exercise.

Would love some company!

Managed 7500 steps on a walk along the greenway with the kids today Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 10/04/2015 20:56

Well, yesterday managed 5236 steps, although it felt as though i had done more, but today i have done a whopping 16,000, which i thank this thread for, it has definitely motivated me to get out more.

i went for a power walk/very slow jog round the park this morning 1.5km measured by an app, 2000 steps on the fitbit. Then i've been to town and back twice and to the allotment and back this evening. i have eaten rather a lot though so i suspect my calorie intake has exceeded what i've used up with the walking.

Discounted - that' interesting that you feel the need to walk as well as run. i used to run, am limited to the slow jog/power walk now due to injury but I didn't appreciate my surroundings in the same way as I do when walking, there is nothing like a nice unhurried walk for de-stressing. i love walking by myself for that reason.

I'm in. I'm going to aim for an average of 10000 steps a day. That gives me scope to do a longer walk at the weekend to make up for busier weekdays where I don't manage the full 10000. I've downloaded an app called steps mania for my phone, but I may need a pedometer for workdays as I don't always have a pocket for my phone.

TheRealMaryMillington · 10/04/2015 21:06

Hello, Cider, hey Who Knows how are you doing? I seem to have fallen off that other thread and have been at a bit of a low ebb for a month or so.

I was just thinking that I wanted something to help me get back into exercising every day (I did an Advent Running challenge which was great - something so simple in running every day).

So I'll come and join if that's ok, a bit late in the day. Don't have a pedometer though so can anyone recommend an app?

googlenut · 10/04/2015 21:15

Is there a way to convert the steps to a cardiovascular calories rating on MFP?

Mintyy · 10/04/2015 21:51
Sad

Pretty much zero steps today unless you count trudging around the kettles display in Currys, Brixton.

crimsonh · 10/04/2015 21:57

11000 today but only 7500 yesterday.
I am hoping for very long walk tomorrow. At least 4 hours with my dog. I am usualy listening to a novel on Audible when walking.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/04/2015 08:24

Hi Mary, the other thread has gone a bit quiet, one or two people still
posting though. I am definitely feeling the need for more exercise at the moment. Unlikely to get many steps in today, going to a wedding.

RattieofCatan · 11/04/2015 09:56

On Weds I didn;'t manage my walk at the gym as traffic was awful, so I arrived 40mins before I was due to start (I was aiming to be there an hour and a half before!). So I have a cappucino at the costa there before heading off to work Blush

On Thursday I managed 8478 steps, Friday was 9014 steps. Both work days but I was bloody tired when I got home and I needed to spend quality time with my pets as they've been a little neglected recently!

Not wearing my pedometer today as I'm going to an MN Meet and I don't want to lose it Grin

Cocolepew · 11/04/2015 10:22

I did the same dog walk yesterday and did 70 less steps Hmm
Obviously my step was longer, which was good because I have a problem with the muscle in my right thigh, but now I need to walk further!
TheRealMary, I just downloaded the first pedometer in Android apps.

CiderwithBuda · 11/04/2015 11:52

Popping in to say hello briefly. Have visitors so haven't had time to read thread for a few days.

Been walking a bit just out and about.

Normal service will resume tomorrow!

Well yesterday I failed miserably at walking 10 000 steps, I actually walked 900 steps Blush only, all day Shock

Thursday I'd done 16 000 though, so was well over.

Today I've done 8300, so I need to do a few laps of the house before bed, but I also need to do some work and that's more important. I'll have to do extra tomorrow.

Cocolepew · 11/04/2015 22:26

I did over 11,000 steps with 2 separate walks today (go me Grin).
I went out with my mum and did over 7000 then my usual dog walk at over 4,000.

That didnt include the other pottering around I've did.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/04/2015 22:56

5300 (mostly on the dance floor at the wedding)

marymouse · 12/04/2015 03:29

900 steps yesterday Hmm that's because I was out drinking the night before and then up with the kids. Plus I'm working the night shift tonight so was trying to preserve my energy.
Super long walk needed later today

LinzerTorte · 12/04/2015 08:15

Hi, can I join?

I bought a fitbit a few years ago and it really motivated me to walk more when I first had it (10,000 steps or more a day), but I've lost the momentum and probably only average around 5,000 steps now.

I've just had a look at the walking challenges and think I'll do the intermediate one.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/04/2015 12:09

I've been out for another very slow jog this morning, 3800 steps so far. I'm enjoying the jogging - I did couch to 5k a few years ago (with Linzer, hello!), but got injured so i need to be very careful. I am doing about 1.5km so far, I would like to get it up to 5k again, but am going to be sticking to a very slow pace, low stride and mainly running on grass to minimise impact. Not likely to do much more today though, I've got studying and gardening planned. Maybe a walk after dinner tonight.

MsDragons · 12/04/2015 12:12

Am I supposed to count every step or just the steps on designated walks?

I've done an exercise class this morning but didn't have any way of keeping my phone on me while at the gym, so my pedometer has only registered the 2000 steps of the walk to the gym and back, and I have no way of knowing how many steps I did in the class (loads!) Is it worth getting a fitbit or similar?

Cocolepew · 12/04/2015 12:19

I was goingto just to my designated walks but realised I might not have time to do 10000 in one Blush
Im getting a cheap pedometer to keep on me all day.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/04/2015 12:36

I wear the Fitbit all the time, so I am counting all steps. I've got one of the clip on types, I clip it on my bra cup just next to the flat bit in between your boobs . However re-reading the challenge link, it sounds as though it is aimed at doing it in specific walks rather than just strolling round Sainsburys or whatever.

LinzerTorte · 12/04/2015 13:00

I have done a pathetic 690 steps so far today. Shock Blush We're planning on going out for a walk a bit later, but I'm still not sure whether I'll make 5,000 today - I need to run up and downstairs a few times!

I also read that bit on the challenge link WhoKnows and am going to ignore it, but am a little confused - surely you'd need more than four 5-minute walks to do 5000 steps? I used to walk DS to school and back (20 minutes altogether) and that was something like 2,500 steps. I had to do that twice and go for a longish (c. 45 minutes) walk after I'd dropped him off to manage 10,000 steps IIRC.

LinzerTorte · 12/04/2015 13:55

Actually, ignore the above - I think it may have been 4,500 steps in 20 minutes rather than 2,500. Off out for a walk now and am going to see how many steps I can do in five minutes.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/04/2015 19:49

i've just hit the 10,000 mark having a run around outside with the DCs. The main contributions were 3800 on this morning's jog, 1500 or so round Sainsbury's and 2500 walking to the allotment and back just now. I feel like going out again!

BalloonSlayer · 12/04/2015 20:53

Can I join?

I have just got a new pedometer and managed 8744 steps so far today. I intend to get it up to 9000 before bed by running on the spot.

I realised that during the holidays, if we didn't go out, I hardly moved. So I resolved to keep an eye on how much I am walking. Quite excited actually.

(This might be unpopular but my sister told me today that she has a fitbit that she wears on her wrist and it counts many more steps than the pedometer when she is around the house, but exactly the same if she goes for a proper walk. Has anyone else found this? She says on a day at home it can tell her she has done 20,000 steps which she knows is ridiculous.)

Mintyy · 12/04/2015 21:08

I got up at 8am and pottered around doing houseworky stuff until 11, then I put pedometer on and went out for a brisk 50 min walk through the park. After that I'd done 6011 steps. Kept pedometer on for rest of day. Just checked it again and it now says I've done 824 steps.

fucking piece of cheap Chinese shite which I bought for over-inflated price at poncetastic sports shop
