Anyone care to join me in a 30 day walking challenge?

Got an email from My Fitness Plan this morning with a 30 Day Walking Challenge and I'm going to give it a go starting tomorrow. I'm rubbish at links on this iPad but if you google 30 day walking challenge quite a few come up - I'm doing the MFP one.

There are three different levels - I'm starting at the beginning as just getting over problems with my Achilles tendon.

Been feeling very unmotivated and down lately and hoping this will be do-able and get me back into exercise.

Would love some company!

Just wanted to say good luck and well done everyone. I did Walk in her Shoes for one week in March which is10,000 steps per day and it was pretty hard. I am pretty active but some days I had to pace around the house to get the last 1,000 steps in or take the long way around!

MsDragons · 12/04/2015 22:03

Well my phone app says I've only done 2400 steps today, but that's because it was snowing this afternoon Shock so I didn't go out again. And I may have kept leaving my phone sitting on the sofa while I was up playing with dd2.

It's back to work tomorrow, so I don't know how many steps I'll manage. I feel like I'm on my feet all day but I don't think I do that many steps because I just take a few steps then stop to help a child, then a couple more steps and help another child. I rarely leave my classroom, and mostly don't leave the building all day. It'll be interesting to see how much I do walk.

Op I walked my way through a terrible boot of pnd after having my ds. I still get emotional thinking of that time. Walking saved my life and I wish I could get back into it. Is it too late for me to join?

SocksRock · 12/04/2015 22:17

I have a Garmin wrist pedometer, trying to get back into running. I did the couch 2 5k a year ago, managed a 5k in 31:40 (personal best etched into my mind!) and then promptly ate my way through the rest of the year. Am now two stone heavier and starting c 25k again, but the strain on my knees mean I need to lose the weight first. I'm aiming for 8,000 a day to start with but would be nice to be able to get to 10,000. I need to lose 2 stone urgently. So can I join you lot please?!? My Vivosmart says I've done 10,889 today but I've been running around with the kids all day and I did try and go for a run as well. Tomorrow when they are back at school, the temptation to just sit on the sofa and eat will be high...

CiderwithBuda · 12/04/2015 22:42

Never too late for anyone to join.

Waves at TheRealMary and WhoKnows. I dropped off other thread as was feeling such a failure and it wasn't helping my mood. Lovely to see familiar faces on here though.

With regard to questions about doing specific walks or aiming for the 10,000 a day - it's up to you. I'm doing the specific walks as I'm trying to not put too much pressure on myself. It builds up gradually so I will be doing much longer walks by the end of the month. At least that's the plan!

Normal life resumes here tomorrow as my visitors have gone. I'm an planning a slightly longer loop than the one I was doing earlier in the week and I will see how many steps it works out as.

Even though I often make it to 10,000 just walking the DCs to various places and back, I do want to start getting in more of the specific walks, because at weekends my step count slumps unless we go out for the day somewhere and once they are walking to school by themselves (which will be in the next 18 months or so) it will drop right off, so I want to get in the habit of other walks and not relying on the school run.

TheRealMaryMillington · 13/04/2015 13:38

Hi Cider, good to see you here.

So, I have no idea how many steps I did (still haven't sorted out pedometer) but I took myself out round the lake and along the beach for 40 mins half walking half running, so that is today's challenge for me.

Tomorrow I will have company of my two smallest.

Cocolepew · 13/04/2015 17:34

I did over 5000 on my walk yesterday, but I had my phone in my coat pocket and it said I had done 293 steps before I made it out of my cul de sac Hmm I had only been walking for 20 seconds so I think I can discount that! Put the phone in my jeans pocket the rest if the way.
Im back at work today, so haven't did ny walk. Im dropping Dd to her friends then I'll take the dog for a beach walk. Im aiming for an hour Shock

CiderwithBuda · 13/04/2015 17:59

An hour on the beach sounds lovley cocolepew.

4,500 step walk done today. Had to go to chiropractor so walked there and back.

It's lovely and sunny which helps make me want to be out.

I'm on just under 5000 so far, walked to Homebase and back in my lunch hour instead of driving. Will go to the allotment in a bit too.

Cocolepew · 13/04/2015 19:43

It would have been nicer if it wasn't raining Sad

Did 6, 499 steps. I have sore thighs now.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/04/2015 20:24

Been to the allotment, now on 8200. These light evenings definitely help Smile

TheRealMaryMillington · 13/04/2015 22:25

Walked to and from yoga (on 10 mins each way ) but makes an hour. this is very pleasing.

Anyone recommend pedometer app for iphone?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/04/2015 22:29

Which iphone have you got Mary? Has it got the built in Health app? There's a step counting function on that but I think it may only be on the newer phones, DH has it on his 5s.

I'm using the Strava app to measure my distances and map them, but I would like something that combines step count and distance/mapping all in one.

Up to 9700 due to a last minute trip to Sainsburys where I walked around for twice as long as I really needed to.

Velve · 13/04/2015 22:36

Just wanted to say if there are plenty of Leslie Sansone's walking workouts on youtube if any of you are interested, they're great when you don't fancy going out or it's raining. I did them a lot when I was pregnant as they got my heart pumping without the high impact moves. Just type in Leslie Sansone or walking workouts.

MsDragons · 13/04/2015 22:55

I've done terribly today. I've only done 4000 steps, none of which were part of a proper walk, all just walking around my classroom. I just haven't had time, I always forget during the holidays just how busy term time is.

LinzerTorte · 14/04/2015 08:29

I'm on track so far as I managed over 7500 steps yesterday. It's just a shame that cycling doesn't count as I did three times as much as normal - to DS's school and back twice at lunchtime (end of the school day) as I forgot the key for his bike lock the first time, and then straight on to pick up DD2 (who normally cycles home with next door neighbour but wasn't able to yesterday and she's not confident about cycling on her own yet). There's no way I'd have had time to walk that distance, though; by the time we were finally home and had had lunch, it was a rush to get to our dentist's appointment as it was.

Think I need to do 6000 steps today, but must check. I'm on just over 2000 atm so need to get moving.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/04/2015 11:02

I managed to get over the 10,000 mark by pacing round the house for 10 mins before bed last night. Unfortunately I have come to work without either my phone or my Fitbit today (both were on charge overnight and forgot to pick them up) so my planned lunchtime walk won't get counted.

BalloonSlayer · 14/04/2015 14:10

Have done my 9000 steps target for today already - woo hoo! Should get a couple more thousand before bed tonight I hope.

(My bum and feet ache)

I am REALLY getting into this. Grin

TheRealMaryMillington · 14/04/2015 15:18

So I have had a meander up the local shopping street with the smalls, so neither far nor fast, about 2 miles total. I think I will go out when DH gets back for a brisk walk round the lake, but which time I might have figured out a pedometer app. I've got an iPhone 5, bit clunky.

MsDragons · 14/04/2015 16:03

I've done about 3000 today, again I've just been wandering around my classroom, and I walked over to the dinner hall for some lunch. I wish I had time at lunch to go for a walk but I barely have time to eat between detentions and helping kids who ask about their homework etc. None of that is active but it IS exhausting.

I'm going swimming tonight, and then out to an evening class, so probably not much chance to do much walking tonight either. I'll see what I can fit in, but I can't imagine it'll be 7000 steps.

CiderwithBuda · 14/04/2015 17:14

I think we are all doing really well. We are thinking about it and trying to walk more. It's all good!

Says she as she admits to not getting up to amount of steps she should have done! I went for my walk and thought it would be a long enough loop but didn't bring my phone. It was about 2,000 steps short. Which is a lot. But. I walked. Was tempted not to. So I'm not beating myself up. I know I could and should go out again but my ankle is aching so I'm about to feed the dogs and ice my ankle. Then I need to get fish and chips for dinner as per request from DS. We only have it when DH is away as he is not keen.

I'm going to try and go out first thing tomorrow and then need to go into town in the afternoon so will walk a bit more then.

Cocolepew · 14/04/2015 17:21

My pedometer still hasn't come, so I dont know what Im doing during the say. Though I was sitting for most of the day in work.
I have a stonking headache but DH sayshe will come out with me tonight so Im going to make the effort.
My legs are feeling much stronger.
I made a Pinterest board on walking Blush I was reading that you should walk as if you were showing someone behind you the bottom of your foot. Im a bit flat footed so Ive been trying to do this.

BalloonSlayer · 14/04/2015 17:42

I am now on 14,416! < preen >

My feet feel like something from Tom and Jerry, throbbing they are.

But . . . today was my day off. When I am back at work tomorrow I don't think I shall get a very high score at all. Sad

(On Sunday we had a day out with what I thought was a lot of walking - I was so proud when my bleeper went off to say I had done 7000 steps. Now look at me! Grin )

Now I am looking for comfy walking shoes for the summer.

Cocolepew · 14/04/2015 19:27

5641 steps on my walk, was walking into the wind, it slowed me down Grin
