I find the garmin takes ages to pick up signal if you are moving , you need to stand still . Not easy if it's wet or cold and you are in lightweight running gear.

AmberNectarine · 11/05/2014 06:44

original that is the most annoying thing about my Garmin, the having to stand still.

Hoping to get out for a long run later today, hopefully the weather will settle down.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 11/05/2014 07:50

So is a Garmin better or worse than using a tracking app on your phone, then? Runkeeper works the minute I step out of the door, however as I keep it zipped up in my back pocket I can't see it as I'm running and I'm pretty sure that if I could see my progress it would help to spur me on.

PolkaSpottyDotty · 11/05/2014 07:54

Good luck cinnamon and anotherbitofcake

softkitty I have Runkeeper on my phone and I have the settings so that it tells me every couple of minutes what my average and current pace is. It automatically reduces the music volume for announcements. You've probably worked that out, so apologies if I'm no use :)

PolkaSpottyDotty · 11/05/2014 08:00

I keep meaning to ask - is anyone registered for Brighton Half and / or the Marathon next year?

originalpiratematerial · 11/05/2014 08:40

I've been using Endomondo which has been fine up to now, but I'd read so many good things about Garmin, including how easy it is just to glance down at your wrist to check your pace, that I was tempted!

Theonlyoneiknow · 11/05/2014 08:45

Me too, am thinking about putting a Garmin on my birthday wish list! Haven't ran for 9 days due to injury from dancing at a wedding last weekend, plus been stressed at work so reaching for too many sweets! Had 10km planned for today but it is chucking it down :-( might have to make do with the treadmill but just not the same

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 11/05/2014 08:56

Thanks Polka but I don't use earphones as I prefer to run without music Smile. I have the phone in a back zip pocket so I can't hear what she's saying from there.

originalpiratematerial · 11/05/2014 09:03

Even if I get the Garmin tamed, i think I will still take my phone out with me as I run in some quite quiet places and would be nervous not having a phone. Most places are busy at the weekends but some weekdays when I've been out I've hardly seen a soul.

MelanieCheeks · 11/05/2014 09:05

my parkrun tour blog

Morrigu · 11/05/2014 09:44

Good luck for today anotherbiteofcake and cinnamon.

Well done to all the parkrunners and glad the first-timers enjoyed it. I've only been once myself last week but think I'm hooked as I can't wait to get back next week.

Ohh you're a Northern Irelander like me Melanie. Have you been to the Portrush one on the beach? I have an inkling I want to do it over the summer. Maybe see you at a parkrun sometimes soon :)

I have a 10k run in two weeks but considering I only began running at the start of Feb I've only done up to 8k. If I run 10k next week to make sure I can do it that should be fine yeah? Would I use that time as the jist of my time allocation? Bit nervous about it now, hoping it doesn't fall on one of those days the runs feel like hell.

PolkaSpottyDotty · 11/05/2014 10:21

449.8 with my run this morning.

The furthest I've been and in under an hour :)

Chopstheduck · 11/05/2014 10:32

456

Another pb for 10k, very windy and quite wet though. Hard to believe it is supposed to be Spring.

MelanieCheeks · 11/05/2014 11:52

Just 2 miles form me this morning, as I slipped on some gravel, twisted my ankle and had to hobble home. Am now nursing my bruised and scraped knee and palm, with an icepack wrapped around a very swollen ankle Sad

Yes I'm in Norn Irn, Morrigu! My home run is Wallace Lisburn, but I've also done Falls, Bangor, Queens....and I've done Portrush twice, as my mammy lives in Portstewart. It's a tough one! I will be digging out photos of it and adding it to the blog soon.

Sirzy · 11/05/2014 11:55

Hope your ok Melanie

Rest that ankle, Melanie! I am paranoid about falling over or twisting an ankle while running. I must look a right tit going on/off kerbs etc, I overdo the carefulness a tad Blush
5 miles from me this morning, my furthest run to date Grin
That brings our total to 463

officelady · 11/05/2014 12:05

Forgot to add - I use an arm holder for my phone. At the moment I run without headphones and I can clearly hear my pace/distance updates while running. If I want to check my distance I can see it on the screen fairly easily (probably not quite as easy as glancing at my watch) but it suits me & it's comfortable and waterproof. The arm holder was about £7 from Sports Direct.

AmberNectarine · 11/05/2014 12:40

I'm doing the Brighton half polka and if I don't get a place in the VLM I think I'll do the marathon there too.

I've got two 10ks in the next two weeks, better pull my finger out and put in a LR this evening!

emummy · 11/05/2014 12:55

468 5 miles today in the Aberdeenshire drizzle, past Crathes castle and along the River Dee.
Melanie that sounds sore! Hope you're feeling better soon

Theonlyoneiknow · 11/05/2014 13:16

Was that on the dee side way?

PolkaSpottyDotty · 11/05/2014 13:26

Amber I'm there for the half :)

I meant Brighton Marathon, sorry I wasn't clear. I'm a bit worried that I'll end up doing it alone and I really, really don't want to run for that long by myself.

Hope your ankle is ok Melanie.

Sirzy · 11/05/2014 13:29

Amber, which 10ks are you doing?

I am struggling to keep up with which events everyone is entering!

OP posts:
AmberNectarine · 11/05/2014 13:58

I'm doing the canary wharf jog and the Bupa London 10k. Then a half on wimbledon common at end of July.

anotherbitofcake · 11/05/2014 14:23
