We are speeding through these threads much faster than I can run!

New thread for runners of all abilities!

Thanks OhOne Smile

Degustibus - go for it! I've only done one organised run - same sort of distance - I did enjoy it although it was harder than I thought Blush!

emummy · 30/04/2014 07:31

Hello new thread! Nice easy 5k yesterday, doing 7 tomorrow, boot camp Fri then 10k at weekend. Got 10k race in May - just 3 weeks, feeling a wee bit nervous but hopefully this weeks' runs will calm me down.

HalleLouja · 30/04/2014 08:25

This is my usual exercise schedule.

Monday - Hit
Tuesday - Run and pilates (not at the same time)
Thursday - LBT type class
Friday - Run
Sunday - Run

My DH is away in a few weeks so thinking of getting a babysitter in to help me go to Hit and pilates. I love Hit maybe a bit too much.

I usually run between 3 and 4.5 miles. Most I have run is 5 miles and have 10k on 8th June (Whipsinade).

EauRouge · 30/04/2014 08:31

Degustibus- you should sign up! I'll be there to cheer you on, DH is running and it's his first race too (he's not much of a runner really).

I've got my 10k on Sunday. Haven't run for ages to give my knee a rest. I really should have got round to going to physio but what with the cat being ill I haven't had time. I've been foam rollering though and had a go on the rowing machine last night to see how things were. I don't think I'll be getting a PB in the race.

lazypepper · 30/04/2014 09:14

This is an interesting read non runners marathon trainer

It's a few years old now, but I was recommended it a while back to prep for any distance running. He also advocates the run/walk thing. In that it really doesn't matter how long it takes to complete the marathon, but that you do it and feel good about it.

Am clinging to the hope that I can get to the level required in the 16 weeks despite knowing that I have an operation booked in in a couple of weeks which will keep me off running for at least two weeks(more like a month!)

Mitchy1nge · 30/04/2014 09:22

degustibus you are so fast now, do it do it do it

Blatherskite · 30/04/2014 09:43

Found you! :)

After 2 days rest my foot feels much better and I'm ready-ish to take on the OU replay this afternoon. Bit nervous I'll be the slowest in my leg but I'm hoping the rest of the team can make it up Wink

I tend to run when I can. It always was Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday but since I swapped clubs and have more options, I tend to just drop in when I feel like it now. Last week I ran Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday but then this week I've had Monday and Tuesday off. The relay is only 1.1 miles and I won't be able to run again later as DH is away. Tomorrow I'm trialling a new parkrun course, nothing planned for Friday yet, Saturday I'm doing some parkrun tourism and then I'll probably skip Sunday as I'm helping set up the marathon and DH will complain if I run too! I could probably do with a better training schedule but DH's new job is making it hard to be able to get out some days so I have to fit it in when the opportunity arises.

OhOne Hopefully I'll spot you and say Hi on Monday. I will be dressed as Wonder Woman so might be a bit more obvious Grin

Sirzy The Great Birmingham Run is a half marathon which is probably why I'm a bit more nervous about entering. It's only 2 weeks away from another one I've entered and halves still hurt at the moment.

Mitchy1nge · 30/04/2014 09:48

lazypepper I've got that book, didn't find it all that readable, was a lot of case histories and stuff (I think? might have it muddled with something else)

does it take people from no running base to marathon in 16 weeks?

lazypepper · 30/04/2014 10:42

Umm I think you have to be able to start at 3miles.

Yes, it's an odd book - but I plan to use it as a journal. Actually mark off the runs in the book (I hate writing in books...).

I just liked some of the psyching yourself up stuff. :)

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 30/04/2014 11:13

Aww, thanks EauRouge Grin

DH is one of those infuriatingly fit people, & with 2 weeks' training did the Huntingdon 10km in 47 mins a few years ago Envy

And most importantly: I have ordered a Garmin! Grin

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 30/04/2014 11:58

PS - hope your cat is better soon, EauRouge

feetheart · 30/04/2014 12:13

HalleLouja - that makes at least 4 of us doing the Zoo Stampede. Looking forward to it as registered last year but couldn't do it. I will be the tall, short-sighted runner with a hyper-excited, competitive 8 year old raring to get started on the 2k run and a rather reluctant tolerant DH and DD (11) in tow :)

Did 3.5 miles early this morning in glorious weather. 56.9% on the age-grading and another PB :)

I want to do parkrun I live in a parkrun black hole :(
We are very urban, lots of reasonably-sized local towns etc but the closest parkrun is 15 miles away. Would be very happy to volunteer but don't have the time at the moment to set one up and we, as a family, are too committed on a Sat morning to make going that far work.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 30/04/2014 13:18

I know what the 10% rule is with regard to increasing distance, but what's the mile per runs per week rule mentioned upthread, please?

Can anyone recommend any good running websites with good info on basics, training plans etc on, and maybe a forum? Thanks. Smile

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 30/04/2014 13:37

Mitchy1nge thanks, I missed your comment earlier! Ok - am convinced, will sign up for my first race

Blatherskite · 30/04/2014 13:43

The relay was so much fun :)

The fact that the sun came out definitely helped.

originalpiratematerial · 30/04/2014 14:15

Ran to work this morning - it's only just over 4 miles but it's better than nothing (and I do still remember the days when I couldn't run all the way to work, they're not that long ago Grin).

Going to aim for longish runs on Friday, Sunday and Monday.

runningLou · 30/04/2014 14:29

Like Mitchy am also off running due to injury and it sucks Sad I miss running soooo much! Last run was a 10k on 6th April but I think that's possibly what did for my knees.
Mitchy, did your physio say not to exercise at all for a while? I am still doing cycling and swimming as terrified of losing fitness!!

runningLou · 30/04/2014 14:30

I should really NC to 'walkingLou' as that is what I currently do round our local park when desperate for a run Sad ... but despite two painful knees which feel the impact of every stride I am determined I will run again!!

HalleLouja · 30/04/2014 14:30

Sounds great blathers. We have sun here too.

Feet I think from previous threads you are not too far from me. I am in a village starting with W in Herts not too far from Harpenden. There maybe a 10k run here in a few weeks.

PostHocErgoPropterHoc · 30/04/2014 14:43

Hello, the last thread was going so quickly I couldn't keep up, but checking in here while it's a nice shiny new thread :-)

I had a good moment yesterday. I'm pretty new to running and have had to fight against finding excuses not to go out, but yesterday I was in a right grump, and was tired after not great sleep, but I actually had the thought process that I'd feel better if I went for a run, and I did! Turned a corner :).

It probably helped that it was a lovely sunny day but I'm taking my victories where I can get them.

Mitchy1nge · 30/04/2014 14:45

lou it was mainly not to run or do anything that would upset my calf, so I started learning how to swim - there is a thread of mine somewhere here about what to do while waiting for it to heal

I stupidly stupidly kept going for long walks and then short runs and stuff but my injury was pretty mild really as these things go

softkitty the miles per runs per week rule is your overall volume rather than how much to increase any given run - so if you run 4x a week you can add 4 miles across the week, if that makes sense?

Mitchy1nge · 30/04/2014 14:47

have achieved day 2 of my galloway 4h marathon plan, which was a 30 minute walk, tomorrow is run/walk 5k

achilles is grumbling Confused

runningLou · 30/04/2014 14:51

Could you link to your exercise to do whilst healing thread, Mitchy? Well done on starting a 4h marathon plan! I did a HM last October and loved it - was pain-free back then! Plan was to do a full one this year but not any more Sad

youbethemummylion · 30/04/2014 15:02

Ooh EauRouge I wonder if your doing the same 10k as me. Ive now resigned myself to my fitness is what it is no time to get faster now so my time will be slow but I find myself panicing about daft things like what time shall I get there, why would I need a bin bag etc I really hate doing anything new especially by myself!

HalleLouja · 30/04/2014 15:03

Well done Post it does make you feel better.
