herbaceous I am not particularly knowledgeable about injuries but that does sound quite worrying - I'd go and see the doctor and they can point you in the direction of the right kind of physio or stretching regime or whatever. I hate getting aches and pains...the thought of not being able to exercise actually scares me these days (never thought you'd hear me say that until I started c25k!)

hotdog74 · 01/03/2014 16:36

hey Funch - I did week 8 run 2 this morning too :-) I went ok today, but run 1 I was really really slow - don't know why but really found it hard to get my legs going - just one of those bad runs I guess. I did keep going for the 28 minutes though so that is something.
I did 4.2 km in the 28 minutes today so would be about 32.30 for 5k - hoping to beat that in 2 weeks when I do my first ever parkrun! When I started in Jan I thought I would do it in under 30 mins - how naive was I LOL
Herb - does sound as though you could do with some professional advice - I have been lucky so far and not had any problems thankfully, but you definitely need some stretched or exercises to help.
Hope everyone else is doing ok - and enjoying some nice weather to run in :-)

funchum8am · 01/03/2014 20:24

Hotdog you may find you do the 5k much much quicker at parkrun - the atmosphere and having lots of people to buoy you up makes a huge difference. I found w8r1 really tough too, then had a mad week including off ill on Tuesday so had a longer rest than usual before the run today. I felt way better on today's run which reminds me how important rest is.

I am actually really loving the whole thing...I cannot believe how much!

funchum8am · 03/03/2014 23:10

Did w8r3 yesterday but increasingly worried about this pain I have in the groin/front of my right leg...seems I am now getting back pain on the same side. I doesn't get worse with running and can disappear at times for days, then just recur Hmm I have made a doctor's appointment and am going to do week 9 very carefully first. A few months ago I'd have loved an excuse not to exercise...now I am gutted!

hotdog74 · 04/03/2014 19:38

Hey Funch - maybe it is a result of the week off and then doing too much? I think try to running taking it easy but be prepared to stop if you get discomfort when running. I had a really bad back around week 3/4, but it is something that has happened before s nothing to do with running. In fact running was when it hurt least but sitting down was agony! I stuck with the program but went really slowly until it was better. But please listen to your GP and do as recommended by him/her.

As for me - week 9 run 1 tomorrow morning, I'm going to try somethign a little different as I always start of and just get slower and slower so I am going to consciously try and start slower and see if I can run the whole 30 minutes at a more consistent pace. Will see how it goes.......

louloutheshamed · 07/03/2014 11:50

I did w4r2 today and I'm amazed that I did it- never ever thought I'd be axle to run for 5 mins!!

Just checked out week 5 though and a bit daunted by the 20 min run!!!

funchum8am · 07/03/2014 18:10

Seriously Lou by the time you get there your body should be ready- I just went really slow and was fine.

I have done w9r2 and have my first parkrun tomorrow to finish on a high!!

hotdog74 · 08/03/2014 19:30

Did week 9 run 2 this morning - went ok - was a bit windy for my liking but kept going for the 30 mins.

Hope the parkrun went ok for you Funch - my first one next Saturday!

dizzyday07 · 09/03/2014 22:16

W2R2 done today. DD went on her bike and enjoyed racing on ahead!

funchum8am · 14/03/2014 18:32

I did it! Completed park run5k last Saturday in 35:00 exactly! I have moved onto a 10k app now - doing 4x10 min runs with 1min walks between this week Smile

louloutheshamed · 14/03/2014 18:38

W5r2 today, managed it, my body continues to surprise me every week!!

But i do have a sore ankle, and still don't have proper shoes yet- that'll teach me Hmm

hotdog74 · 15/03/2014 13:36

Well done everyone - good that we are keeping it up.
Funch - Glad to hear your park run went well - I did my first one this morning and managed to run all the way so something to improve upon. What is the 10k program you are following? I'm not sure whether to go for 10k or try and improve my 5k time first and then move up distance. I definitely need to get another target though to keep up with the 3 weekly runs!

funchum8am · 16/03/2014 20:42

Hotdog I had to go for the 10k as I just cannot seem to run faster! Maybe I should listen to music instead of audiobooks, but that is the main reason I have run so often, to find out what happens next in the book! I also love the variety of different run/walk lengths each week, and being told exactly what to do!

I am doing the Zen Labs10k for Pink app but I preferred GetRunning. I even emailed to beg them to do a10k one!

hotdog74 · 19/03/2014 18:09

Thanks for that info - have decided to just keep running 5 k 3 times a week for the next month and then do another park run. After that I will look at stepping up to the 10k program.
I am still finding 5k to be quite challenging and think I could do with a bit of consolidation before upping the distance any more, and not sure I can face running any further in this wind that has blowing here for the last week. Hopefully after a month of running 5k to my own music, I will feel refreshed and a bit fitter and more able to cope with upping the mileage. That's the plan anyway :-)
Do keep posting though, as I would really like to see how you get on, and give me some motivation to move up to 10k next month :-)

dizzyday07 · 20/03/2014 22:10

DD and I re-ran W2R3 tonight mainly as we are both taking part in the Sport Relief Swimathon this weekend and wanted to stick with something we have done before and we will make the move up to 3 minutes of running next week!

funchum8am · 22/03/2014 18:31

Well done dizzy!

Hotdog, your plan sounds very sensible. I have finished my second week of 5k to 10k which meant run 15 walk 1 x 3. I ran about 4.2 miles in total. The first run in this week I found hard but on the second one about half way through the dolphins finally showed up! And again today...felt like I could go on forever!

I have downloaded a half marathon training app and weirdly it asks you to run less far on two days a week but has one much longer run a week once you get to about 4 weeks in (5 miles or so) plus cross training ie other forms of exercise like swimming or cycling on 1-2 days, so it is a bigger commitment overall. Not sure whether I will go for the half but it is nice to dream about how thin fit I would be!

louloutheshamed · 22/03/2014 19:37

Can I ask for some advice- ingot up to w5r2. (2x8mins) and then have missed a week due to knee/ankle
pain. I'm better now so want to start again tomorrow- im wondering if I should repeat w5r2 or even go back to w5r1 (3x5mins)? What do you think?

hotdog74 · 24/03/2014 15:56

So glad you have found the dolphins Funch! Can't say I have found them yet, but I live in hope. Dreaming about a half is a good motivator, but not sure that I would be able to devote enough time to it but as you say good to dream. I'm toying with the race for life 10k at the end of June - might give it a go!
Lou - probably too late, I would probably start week 5 again, just to ease into it, but hope all went well whatever you did :-)

amazonianwoman · 27/03/2014 11:34

Can I join in, a bit late in the day?!

Started at the beginning of last week after doing no proper running for around 13 years. I'm quite enjoying following a programme rather than just setting off, finding it too difficult to keep going then giving up.

Can I ask which app everyone is using? The one I have doesn't seem to match any of the stats here, and it keeps crashing...

Lou55 · 27/03/2014 16:54

Ladies, I am looking for the best c25k and c210k app for iPhone, can anyone help pls?

dizzyday07 · 27/03/2014 17:59

I am using the NHS C25K Podcasts on my ipod

Lou55 · 28/03/2014 10:57

Thanks dizzyday, I shall give that one a go

louloutheshamed · 28/03/2014 18:03

I just did w5r3 - the 20 mins!! I really can't believe I did it Smile

louloutheshamed · 28/03/2014 19:55

The downside however was that I was overtaken by a woman twice my age going at double my speed Hmmbut Laura says not to go too fast Smile

dizzyday07 · 29/03/2014 19:36

I went out alone to undertake W3R1 tonight - AND I DID IT!!!!!!

If the dolphins everyone mentions result in a very broad grin and high five-ing yourself, then I got them Blush

It wasn't half as bad as I thought it was going to be - and I think only having 2 repeats of the set to do made it seem really achievable.
