Drno hope he better soon.
Feel grim today, got a headache but must do ab work. Another cup of tea maybe first

Peach ouchy sounds like the baby is ready

DrN hope everyone is feeling better now

about Mnetting dh knows and calls all the people I know from here my imaginary friends, he has met a few in real life and he himself has many imaginary friends Grin
even dd knows I go on MN, knows my nickname no need to hide

DebiTheScot · 08/11/2011 09:55

me too. Very dreich here too. (following on from cherry's comment on previous thread)

I remembered this morning that ds2 starts pre-schl in Jan and will be going on a Tuesday which is a day i don't work. So I'll be able to run in day light then. And I can sometimes get out at about 4pm on a Friday so it's not all bad.
At the moment I can't get out very easily on Tues or Thurs as I can't eat until after the boys are in bed and I feel bad at telling dh at 7.30 to make the tea while I go for a run (I do it sometimes but can't do it all the time as he only gets home about 7).

How big does a hill have to be to count as hill training? I'm a bit lacking in hills and I can only think of 2 near enough me. One takes probably 2 mins to run up and is not too steep at the bottom and mediumly steep at the top. The other takes less than a minute to run up and is steepish. They are near enough my house to be able to run to and then do repeats on them if it would be worth it. They're together too so could do up the bigger one, down the other side (not as far down as up), up the little one, down the other side then repeat in reverse. And is hill training worth doing even if most runs you do are reasonably flat? Will it help my flat speed? Could hills be better for me than intervals in terms of impact on my shins?

My other question for Alex Rhet Ferguson all of you is about HM training. I think it's about 20 weeks away (12 weeks from start of Jan) so I've got time but want to start thinking about it. Also I'm much better at going out if it says on a piece of paper on the fridge that I should go out!
My thinking is that from Jan I'll do something along these lines (between now and then I need to gradually build up the miles again as I'm not back at this stage yet): Tues- 6 miles, Thurs- 4 miles, Sat- parkrun 3 miles, Sun- start at 6 miles and then increase to 14. I won't be able to do parkrun every weekend though.
But I need to be doing more than just running on those Tues and Thurs runs don't I? Things like fast miles in the middle? Hills? Intervals? What will help the most?

DrNortherner · 08/11/2011 10:01

Ok Ok what is the dreich malarkey?!

debi your HM is in March, same as mine, so I reckon our training will be similar. rhet, alexF anyone else can you advise what my training should be, it currently looks like this:

Mon - strength sesh/drills (led by elite runner from running club)
Tues - running club (intervals of varying length/hills etc)
Weds - rest
Thurs - 5k fairly fast
Fri - 10k tempo
Sat - long run, currently 8 miles, will build this back up
Sun - rest

Lats time I trained to 11 miles, this time I want to train to about 14 I think just to help me mentally.

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 08/11/2011 10:16

DrN dreich is (according to the net)

A combination of dull, overcast, drizzly, cold, misty and miserable weather. At least 4 of the above adjectives must apply before the weather is truly dreich
it was a dreich day

You just sort of know when the weather is truly dreich!

Interestedabout the HM plans. I am thinking of a 12 week program, which means I need to start mid December. Until then, just maintaining. I am a bit concerned about getting the distance/times done because I work 4 days a week, plus DP often isn't about due to his work shifts. And my back can be a bit dodgy with too much running.

do you think the HM training is do able on three runs a week - thinking two shorter/tempo/fartlek/track sessions in the week and one long run at the weekend?

stickylittlefingers · 08/11/2011 10:25

cherry it's certainly doable, cos that's the way I had to do it for my first two HMs. Some weeks I'd get out 3 mornings as well as the weekend run, but others it was only two when work got just too busy (I was working FT, and both DP and I have/had annoying jobs where the hours are just whatever is asked of you). My morning runs couldn't be longer than 4 miles, otherwise the getting up was so early I'd just be too knackered with late nights as well.

But (jeez I do go on!) that was definitely "just getting round" training. I think it's only possible to get faster by giving it more time out on your feet. But someone may have other opinions!!

Dreich is a great descriptive word! It most definitely is here. DD1 wouldn't believe it was time to get up it was so dark (and still is). I ought to be cleaning the shower, but I don't wannoo. I want to sit here and nest...

Marking my place

monkeyLFDTwench · 08/11/2011 11:11

Poor peach and the exploding grape Sad. Thank God I've never suffered from the old Farmer Giles, but one of my friends suffered so badly they decided against a third child! Hopefully it's a sign dd is ready and all will disappear when the birth is done.

Dreich is a great word, though it took me three tries to type it thanks to auto correct!

debi I have a similar issue with hills, lots of long slow ones on my normal route but nothing short and steep - I've been reading that you need to combine the two, so a short steep hill should take 30 seconds to charge up again and again - my hills are all at least half a mile long. I have real problems mentally pushing my speed, so am hoping hill intervals will build up leg strength.

Just did 4 miles in the gym - intervals. My fast speed is what used to be my warm up speed Smile. But - I will FDT.

Also tried to build in a few more strength bits at the end of my run, will see how that goes.

orange hope you FDI after that second cuppa [stern look].

peachLFDTsmuggler · 08/11/2011 11:40

Oh t'is very much dreich here today!

DrNo, what did you end up doing work-wise today. Poor DS, hope he gets better soon.

Debi, you could use the steepiah one for lots of short fast bursts and the other one for steadier intervals, they would both definitely improve your flat speed too!

Cherry, I did HM on 3 runs a week, I thinkni did one ling, one tempo and one easy. If I was doing it now I'd do intervals/hills alternate weeks instead of the easy but would still only get out 3 times.

Thanks for the new thread Coach Rhet, sorry it always seems to be you. I will defo do one in new year when I am not here as a fraudulent runner!!!

Sticky, may I suggest a lazybastard way of cleaning the shower? Get in and have a nice relaxing hot shower and just sort of liberally chuck shower gel around. Et voilà! You can probably tell I'm not from the fanny school of housework... Grin

cestlavie · 08/11/2011 11:47

What does LFDT mean? Did I miss its subtleties somewhere between threads or is an acronym which is universally known and which I look staggeringly witless asking about in a parental way (see modern use of the word 'sick' for example!)? And would I need to translate into French and re-acronyme to include in my name?

peachLFDTsmuggler · 08/11/2011 11:52

Ha ha, yes I think it all happened when you were AWOL. It means Let' Fucking Do This!!! To be shouted, literally or just inside your head, when in need of inspiration during training or racing.

And yes please, a French insert if you please!!!

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/11/2011 12:09

Ha, have been LFDT in the shower (cleaning, sadly, nothing more exciting!). Peach I'm so far away from the fanny school of housework that I've been scrubbing with the Vileda and a bucket of bleach. Ours is possibly the least well designed shower in the world. But I was belting out "raindrops keep falling on my head" at the same time, so keeping me spirits up!

If rhet's going to be Alex Ferguson style coach, we'll have to mind not to piss her off. Otherwise we won't see her for months and she'll send DD1 to come and give us something inconsequential and tedious instead.

backwardpossom · 08/11/2011 12:32

Thanks for the new thread, rhet

Debi I have a feeling I'd get on with your DH (I'm also an Aberdeen fan, for my sins).

Pretty miserable day here, too, but it's a bit warmer than it has been. Running club tonight :)

DrNortherner · 08/11/2011 12:34

And she may lob a pair of running spikes at us

So. Ds is now shitting water. Gross I know. He decided he wanted Lucozade, so I bundle him in the car in his dressing gown and shove the dog in the boot as he is pissing me off pacing around the house demanding a walk I convinced ds he can stay in the car whilst I drive to shop for supplies then drive to big field where ds can stay in the car and I can lob balls for the dog. So, the weather is driech here too. Get on my back street (think terraced style street) and my way out is blocked by 2 scaffolding vans. Lots of builders around and much activity. When I ask if they can move they helpfully snuggest I reverse the whole length of the street, which means manoevouring around a tight corner. Reversing is not my strong point. All the time I am doing this I am thinking 'shit, this feels weird' Finally get to the Coop and discover I have a flat tyre. Grr. DS was in tears (MTFU kid) thinking he was going to have to walk home in his fleecy dressing gown and slippers. So I buy the supplies and risk the drive home (not far) and on the way 7 people gesture at me to tell my my tyre is flat as I smile sweetly through gritted teeth.

I have just called my local garage and sounded like a right girl as I have no frigging clue how to change a tyre. Someone is coming round at 1.00pm to do it for me.....................any more bad luck for me today? Grin

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/11/2011 12:41

Oh drno :( what a morning! I've never changed a tyre either. The nice people at Blackcircles.com have always come up trumps for me.

What's a MTFU kid?

ThatVikRinA22 · 08/11/2011 12:57

am thinking LFDT as i survey the tip that is my house....

DrNo...sympathies! i have no clue with tyres either - and DD is tucked up in bed with something nasty aswell....hope your DS is better soon!

i have done something a bit daft considering i am only weeks into building up my miles....i got a foot tattoo and wont be able to run for a few days i think....stupid bint! timed that completely wrong.

marking place for when i am back in my trainers.....

DrNortherner · 08/11/2011 13:08

Man the fuck up kid!

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 08/11/2011 13:10

DrN, once your tyre is sorted, I am ordering you to the sofa with your DS, blanket, chocolate and a good DVD!

Sticky I suspect MTFU is man the f*ck up kid. Probably how all our children are being raised given the LFDI vibes round here!

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/11/2011 13:12

thanks! it's SBSBP in our house (stop being so bloody pathetic!). I tell myself this around 15 times per day...

DrNortherner · 08/11/2011 13:14

Lol! He is not normally tearful at all, just this bug has left him wiped out and feeling sorry for himself.

Running club tonight and the coach emails says a tough session of 6 min intervals. I need to go after being stuck in here all day. Dh an I normally go together but tis not fair carting ds to his Grannys when he has the shites is it? so one us us will have to stay home with the child. I missed my sesh last night so I think I should go, but I bet we have a falling out heated discussion later......

peachLFDTsmuggler · 08/11/2011 13:15

Oh no DrNo, what a 'mare! I changed a tyre once, but it was when I was learning to drive, err 20 years ago Blush

Sticky, I have cleaned the shower properly here exactly twice since we moved here 3 months ago. However I never use it! I use the one upstairs in the bath. DP uses the downstairs one. Am sure if he was unhappy about it he would clean it...wouldn't he!

What's your tattoo of Vicar?

bonkers20 · 08/11/2011 13:19

I have to say, dreich isn't so bad once you're running in it Smile

DebiTheScot · 08/11/2011 13:35

Just to clarify for you you English people. The ch in Driech is pronounced like loch, not like much. Just wanted to make sure you weren't making up a new word!

possum He's also a Huntly fan (well as much of a Highland League fan as you can be living 600 miles away!), does that mean you wouldn't like him?
