I don't know that it has saved him. I think it will show him up even more, although maybe not in the immediate term. It all depends what happens.

I wonder if the Russia report will come back to bite him.

The added sanctions are better but still very limited

The Tories are already suggesting they don't think he's the man for the job. And that's before you start thinking he's in Putins pocket.

So do we think that Putin is another Kim Jong-un? I heard Putin referred to as that on today’s radio. So unpredictable in his authoritarian megalomania? Or is he a more rationale mafia boss and will take Ukraine, which seems inevitable, and then stop at that?

mega thread part 6: Invasion and Evasion

I’m hoping he’s the rationale mafia boss… the other is too daunting to contemplate.

DrBlackbird · 24/02/2022 20:31

Hmm Biden warned that Putin will likely not stop his expansion with Ukraine Meanwhile Czech president, Miloš Zeman, called Putin “a madman” and admitted he had been wrong to dismiss the prospects of an invasion of Ukraine

So maybe more Kim Jong-un after all?

mathanxiety · 24/02/2022 23:36

I don't think he is a madman. I think he will stop at the eastern provinces of Ukraine - occupy Kiev and then talk with tanks to back up his peace proposals. Plus a puppet regime in Kiev for the foreseeable.

He won't want millions of disaffected western Ukrainians within his borders. The eastern Ukrainian provinces tend to be Russian speaking and generally pro Russia. It's like the British justification for holding onto Northern Ireland.

I don't think there will be a shooting war involving NATO troops. Perhaps mercenaries though. There will be plenty of condemnation, and sanctions.

DrBlackbird · 24/02/2022 23:45

Originally I thought he’d only want eastern separatist regions until today.

mathanxiety · 25/02/2022 00:36

I think he will take as much as he can and use it as a bargaining chip, falling back to a line stretching from Crimea to the north east including Kharkiv.
