Just watched Kamala Harris address the Munich security conference.

Whatever might be said about the context, her last words struck me:
It takes a lot more strength to build something up than it takes to tear something down.

Not Brexit but EU-related: "the European Commission is coordinating the delivery of essential supplies to support the civilian population via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. This is to support Ukraine`s preparedness efforts for all possible scenarios." twitter.com/MarkerJParker/status/1495042492592529411 and
ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_22_1222
I'd be glad to know we were doing something practical like that. It very much brings home the real-life implications on the ground.

DrBlackbird · 20/02/2022 09:43

I was on another thread about the NHS with some posters saying it was ‘broken’ because it’s not performing satisfactorily and something needs to be done aka privatise it

Why is no one saying our political system is broken because it’s not performing at all, let alone satisfactorily? There doesn’t seem to be the same urgent clarion call for something to be done. Is this a failure to connect the dots? That it actually matters who you vote Into office for health care provision, for transport services, for a well functioning judiciary, prison service etc. Argh.

Instead, a PM can lie repeatedly and seemingly break the law repeatedly whilst being continuously incompetent and callous toward the British public and still he can carry on refusing to step down.

I sincerely hope whoever planned the platinum jubilee events made sure they could be repurposed as a coronation celebration at short notice. Because having street parties might look a tad inappropriate.

Yep. HMQ looks very frail lately. I suppose its all organised though? I'm a Republican so I don't care what happens to the monarchy but assuming the monarchy survives to the next century how many would be able to say they lived to see a monarch reign for so long? From a social history perspective its very interesting and probably won't happen again. Charles is 75 William is 40 Even of they live to a ripe old age (and why wouldn't they?) They won't see 70 years on the throne.

Not by this shower of incompetent shits. Had I been tasked with it, then my contingency would be some way of going from hurrah to boohoo with a minimum of wastage.

It would be more interesting to speculate whether the "double whammy" of covid and nonce Prince Andrew finally do it for her madge ? Personally I would imagine she would have died from sheer fury at the actions of her government.

Of course as a committed Remainer, Charles may not find his accession as smooth as he may wish.

Opal8 · 20/02/2022 13:25

It's he "man in grey" that organise it.
It's the people ggovernment that pay for it.

Opal8 · 20/02/2022 13:28

Christ, can you imagine how awful Prince nonce would have been on the witness stand????
It would have severely weakened support for the monarchy.
Emily maitliss isn't happy...the official statement basically contradicted everything his nonce said in their interview 🤣🤣
Quelle surprise

Two side plates ? Reversible hats ? Two part flag poles for half mast ?

It would be interesting to have a coronation every decade. Makes the discussion about dumping the anachronism that is hereditary privilege more frequent.

Opal8 · 20/02/2022 13:35

The whole idea of monarchy is just.....so morally and ethically wrong in the 21st century.

The idea they are special by dint of either marrying their cousins, killing the encumbent monarch, being protestant...its all just utter bollocks.

I'm trying to gauge my level of cynicism ... would Boris Johnson start a war with Russia to stay as PM? I am trying to think if there is a line he would not cross ... he has crossed so many already ...

You need to ask yourself whether there was maybe a 35% chance that he could convince 42% of people likely to vote that it was somebody else's fault.

I wonder when a reporter or interviewer will grow the necessary to interrupt him when he's banging on about Russia and just say:

Prime Minister. Is there any reason why anyone should believe a word you say about anything ?

DGRossetti · 20/02/2022 16:33

and sadly a by-election in Norther Ireland coming up

That will be ... interesting

Blimey 39 is no age
Indeed.

However things move on regardless, and I notice Michelle O'Neill seems comfortable floating the "U" word now. No idea how realistic her becoming First Minister is ? How does that square with the oath of allegiance ?

Opal8 · 20/02/2022 19:13

O Neil's recent rhetoric is certainly very interesting...

I told ds1 last year I thought that Ireland wouldn't unify in my lifetime. I am starting to think I might just see it.

I never thought I'd see the Berlin wall fall ...
Opal8 · 20/02/2022 20:28

True...true.

I keep telling ds1 - who feels as impotent and angry as I did at 18 - that I never thought I'd see the wall come down, or apartheid end.

One has to have hope.

Members of the NI assembly do not swear an oath of allegiance to the british crown. Theoretically First minister and deputy first minister have equal status.

Apparently the #Brexit land of hope and glory is now mainly about wearing fur and eating foie gras, despite their previous promise to ban both.

I’m sure this will be a great relief to all those ‘ordinary working people’ wanting to crush the London metropolitan elite.
