Desperation that once again takes us back to this

@DuncinToffee

The BBC did report it yesterday, not on the front page but tucked away in politics www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60485759

Truss is doing the rounds this morning

I heard. No wonder Putin has no fear of the West.

Although it's amusing to see spokesperson after spokesperson being made to squirm over the fact that the Tory party is bankrolled by Putin too. Because there is no other reason for the anti-corruption measures repeated proposed to not have been enacted

HannibalHeyes · 23/02/2022 23:37

Layla Moran going for it, naming 35 Russian oligarchs who should be sanctioned using Parliamentary privilege.

mathanxiety · 24/02/2022 01:46

All Putin has to do is sabre-rattle in order to drive oil prices up and send stock markets tumbling. Effectively, it's the oil gobbling countries whose middle classes depend on the stock market for their retirement funds who will feel the pinch.

mathanxiety · 24/02/2022 01:47

Sanctions, shmanctions, in other words.

DrBlackbird · 24/02/2022 07:09

So Putin has started his "special military operation" - war - formally and literally against Ukraine with shelling and Russian tanks rolling across the border this morning.

He must feel so assured and omnipotent to do this. There are grounds for Putin to hold such a view. He has absolutely run rings around western leaders for years viz it’s gas, it’s cyber attacks, it’s funding of western political parties (the Tories), elections, destabilising the Middle East, strengthening ties with China, developing its own Russian internet etc etc etc.

So what will happen to Ukraine now? I feel desperately sorry for them. Ukrainians will die and the separatist regions will be annexed like Crimea whilst the west looks on and does nothing?

Why now? Why at all?

DGRossetti · 24/02/2022 08:21

The Russians have spent decades understanding how asymmetric warfare works - after all they were exposed to it for nearly a decade in Afghanis ...

(of course that's probably what green-lit all of this. We abandoned Afghanistan. We'll do the same with Ukraine.)

However, the sheer chutzpah of Nadine Dorries getting in a hissy fit because RT "might lie" does leave a little bit of bile in the mouth when you consider the biggest source of lies these past few weeks has been Boris fucking Johnson him fucking self.

I did see an interesting comment about China in all of this ... they may not be so thrilled that Russia is supporting breakaway regions given their stance on Taiwan and Tibet.

Not good news to wake up to...

Peregrina · 24/02/2022 09:06

The UK is going to 'respond decisively', apparently. This will be after Johnson's given the Russians time to get their money out.

Just picked up the final clump of tasks in my new role as my predecessor left yesterday (we were lucky to have a planned handover).

"Brexit planning"

Presumably I need to create a workflow to look at the impact of switching to imperial units ?

At Business Questions, Commons Leader Mark Spencer announced there would be a debate on Ukraine.

On March 7th.

These aren't any sanctions.

They're M&S sanctions.

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2022 12:25

Johnson: "Today in concert with our allies, we will agree a massive package of economic sanctions which will, in time, hobble the Russian economy."

'Hobble' that will scare them.

Just more lies really.

If he wanted the public to take him seriously - which is generally a good thing in times like this - he should have acted seriously from the beginning of his premiership. If not before.

You know who I do take seriously ? Vladimir Putin.

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2022 12:35

Some light relief, Matt Green on sanctions

Afghanistan came to mind for me too. Kyiv could be taken in days. Lots of hand wringing by western leaders, but ultimately everyone’s too dependent on Russian gas and Russian money. So nothing is done. Putin feels more emboldened than ever.

Makes me wonder about that bloody Russian report. Was it ever published?

HannibalHeyes · 24/02/2022 17:01

Well, thank fuck we weren't bothering about all this Russian nonsense, and dealing with the imminent threat of an EU Army instead...

Quite amusing now it's a hot war that Farage and Banks are nowhere to be seen.
DuncinToffee · 24/02/2022 17:29

Farage popped up wjth a tweet,, not sure about Banks.

DrBlackbird · 24/02/2022 18:11

This has saved Johnson. Hasn’t it.

DuncinToffee · 24/02/2022 18:40

He has some breathing space for sure
