The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

@Peregrina

Brexiters continue to excel themselves. Now where are the posters to tell me that no Brexiters were racist?
I’ll happily tell you that people should be able to fly flags if they want to. Why on earth would an elected official want to act to prevent the display of the Union flag.
ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 16:00

Louise
Read the article
Flags are not normally flown on Penzance promenade in the winter because they can be damaged by high winds. But over new year 18 union flags appeared on poles owned by Cornwall council to mark the end of the Brexit transition.
Broadhurst made it clear they had not been authorised and they were taken down. A petition was launched against the move and the issue was picked up by local and national media, leading to “thousands” of abusive messages.

The flags were put up by other than the owner of the poles
Without permission
Contrary to the agreed regulations
So the owner of the poles took them down

Peregrina · 08/01/2021 16:02

Louise, if you read the article you will see that they don't fly any flags in winter because strong winds can tear them down. I speak from first hand experience having nearly been blown off my feet by Cornish winds. You will also see how the Mayor, an elected official, was threatened by racists, which was the real point I was making. I have got pretty sick of being told that Brexiters aren't racist and xenophobic. A significant minority are, and it's time that you Leavers were prepared to acknowledge that fact.

Penzance council own the flag poles so of course they don't want people coming and putting up whatever they like. Would you be happy if I came and planted the flag of the Council of Europe in your front garden?

Sorry to say, but I slightly judge all flag flyers. US, UK, St. George, Union or not. Mainly because they are unnuanced statements that make most fliers look like idiots. For example anyone who flies a Union flag cannot be a Brexiteer, given what Brexit has done to the Union.

Also, I can't remember when I learned what country I live in. But it clearly stuck as I don't need to see a sea of flags to remind me.

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 16:12

The only place where I love to see the flags
is outside the UN building in New York

I think I was about 8 when I wrote in a book
My Name
My Street
My Town
County
Wales,
United Kingdom
Europe
The World
The Universe.

I don't think I was alone.

We can speculate that Raab might have written
Dominic Raab
Street
Town
County
England
There is nowhere else.

I see that Trump was complaining that the people who stormed the Capitol were lower class. Where is his loyalty to his electorate.

I can stomach them on official buildings. But overall it seems horribly foreign to me. Next thing we'll be expected to have a photo of the Prime Minister in every government building, which would be ghastly.

DRG don’t move to France! Photos and flags everywhere

Whatever happened to "The American Dream" which I'm pretty certain was founded on classlessness.

Although occasionally there can be some catharsis when the truth is finally admitted. America is no different to the countries it was formed from. Glad we sorted that.

Much as I love France and the French, I wouldn't actually be one Grin

Didn't all English schools have photo of the Queen somewhere at one time ?

I don't like it. These aren't Tudor times. We don't need the jackboot of the ruling class in our face everywhere we go.

Odd that UK politics has two people called "Michael Gove" knocking around. I guess it's statistically possible.

You just have to look at how flags are used in NI to see why not allowing flags in certain circumstances is a sensible idea.

longdarkwinter · 08/01/2021 16:51

Next thing we'll be expected to have a photo of the Prime Minister in every government building,

My funniest experience of this was a USA immigration building, which had the world's smallest framed photo of Trump on an empty wall.
There was on the wall around the photograph a discoloration ring which showed that the photograph of the previous president must have been at least six times larger.
Just to add to the effect the tv was showing a civil rights activist's funeral which the security guard was sat watching.

Sadly they are rabble fodder. Also they get abused by people like Boris Johnson and Donald Trump too often for me to have a serious respect for them. They're the patriot equivalent of going to church, so you can claim to be Christian and then spend 195 days a week pissing all over the bible.

By all means though, fly a flag. It is a free country Hmm. Likewise I will judge. It is a free country. I've not really accepted this new wave punk idea that you can do whatever you want on the one hand, and it have no consequences on the other. Call me old fashioned if you like. Or indeed a Christian ... as ye reap and all that stuff.

Actually, I think you will find that Cornwall County Council own the flagpoles and the Mayor of Penzance, as the top representative of Penzance Town Council is an official of another body.

www.penzance-tc.gov.uk/penzance-mayor-town-clerk/

Your example of someone coming to plant a flag in my garden, or in this case more accurately acting to remove a flag I planted in my garden is a good one.

Clearly she absolutely doesn’t deserve racist and shouldn’t be getting abuse on the back of this, no one does and some of the stuff I’ve seen on Twitter about her is appalling. Her decision was still wrong tho, IMO.

Peregrina · 08/01/2021 17:32

No, the people who put the flags up were still wrong. They could have asked properly. You are saying that a free for all is fine.

I think you will find that you completely misunderstand how two tier local government works in Penzance

(a) The Town council has an SLA to manage assets on behalf of the Unitary
www.penzance-tc.gov.uk/meet-the-maker-penzance-town-flags-2020/
(b) Management of what goes on the flagpoles will be in accordance with the agreed policy
www.penzance-tc.gov.uk/statement-on-behalf-of-penzance-council-and-local-cornwall-councillors-tim-dwelly-jim-mckenna-and-cornelius-olivier/
(c) day to day decisions are taken by the clerk

But as the currently elected Mayor has the temerity to be black, the racists targeted her

Hmm

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 17:45

Sabrina
Mayor is a ceremonial "Buggins Turn" role
No Party lists here www.penzance-tc.gov.uk/your-councillors/
as is the best way to run Town Councils

You know something. I don't think that's the characteristic that locals use to distinguish her from any other Mayor.
