The 'smooth' exit from transition now leads to a million and one little things that you can't get hold of or took completely for granted.

Why is sainsbury in NI selling spa milk? Why can't you get hold of your favourite food stuff?

Its a slow strangulation of the country.

In which you get to learn all about the merits of the EU and what a donkey Johnson really is.

Has this been posted yet?
Not quite sure which is more embarrassing ? I can see his family asking for the Tip O'Neill reference to be removed.
ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 17:53

Oh @SwedishEdith that is WONDERFUL

I knew somebody had died tasering themselves but that is a whole new level

Michael Gove says “significant additional disruption” is expected at the border in the coming weeks, particularly on the Dover-Calais route.

But he said that if the government does everything it can, working with businesses, “then we can make sure that we do get to a new normal where trade flows more freely than ever before.” (via

"Trade flows more freely than ever before." They don't even know they're doing it now.

Before what ?
Before Customs was invented ?

We need a way of telling these two Michael Goves apart.

There's the one who worked tireless last year telling us there would be no delays. Now this new chap pops up to warn us the exact opposite.

I guess at the end of the day, they could both be Michael Gove #2 ?

Peregrina · 08/01/2021 18:49

Oh dear, the man tasering himself and dying is worse than the story in yesterday's news about the burglars accidentally phoning the Police and being caught in the act.

It certainly makes it hard for Trump supporters to decry the accusation of being numbnuts. Although I imagine in his last few seconds he probably wished he had ....

@ListeningQuietly

Sabrina Mayor is a ceremonial "Buggins Turn" role No Party lists here www.penzance-tc.gov.uk/your-councillors/ as is the best way to run Town Councils
The Express was getting quite worked up about her Labour credentials:

Fury as Labour mayor of seaside town REMOVES Union Jack flags raised to celebrate Brexit

But then, it’s The Express Grin

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 19:06

Sabrina
AS you well know I'm rather au fait with the workings of Town Councils
and for my sins know more about the flagpole rules than is healthy.

I know of dual hatted councillors who are "party" at the larger authority
but not at "town / parish"
and it works well in fact better than if parties stick their noses into single towns

Which comes back to one of my key Brexit bugbears ....
Localism
Decisions should be made at the most local level they can

SabrinaThwaite · 08/01/2021 19:11

LQ I’ve been the equivalent of a parish councillor, so I have an idea of things work at a local level.

I just liked the way The Express headline laid bare its prejudice and bigotry.

ListeningQuietly · 08/01/2021 19:15

Sabrina
Indeed.
Pure and simple racism and gammon bigotry

Bit worried reading that a lot of delivery services are suspending U.K.-EU deliveries, as I need to renew my passport!

Anyone know if ordinary document post is affected?

TonMoulin · 08/01/2021 20:17

@Mistigri, are you not renewing your passport at the British embassy in France? Shock

AuldAlliance · 08/01/2021 20:34

TonMoulin, it doesn't work like that. It's online and you pay an arm and a leg for DHL delivery...

Oh so it’s sent directly from the uk then

To get my French passport I still have to go to the embassy with all the relevant paperwork. And then go back to pick it up.
I assumed all countries had a similar system where the embassy is in charge of passports renewals for that country

Having said that with our current lockdown, I think I’d rather pay for DHL than having to travel down to London (my two dcs need to renew them. No idea how I will do that)

Peregrina · 08/01/2021 21:10

Yes 'an absence of factually incorrect information....' does rather take some of the sting out of the letter.

What will Johnson's response be? F*ck Business, I expect.

Mistigri · 08/01/2021 21:13

are you not renewing your passport at the British embassy in France?

Used to be done via the consulate but that changed years ago. You have to physically send your old passport to the U.K.

Peregrina · 08/01/2021 21:14

It's online and you pay an arm and a leg for DHL delivery...

And then any documents you needed to send get returned incorrectly addressed, so they don't get delivered, or not until two months later, having done a couple of round trips UK - France and back.

Peregrina · 08/01/2021 21:16

More efficient, you see.

HannibalHayes · 08/01/2021 21:26

Republicans right now...

It used to be like that (consulate in Paris handled our passport applications) but it changed a few years ago and they also put the price up massively!
