Today is the last scheduled day for talks with the EU.

We have til 30th June to ask for a transition extension. We won't.

That leaves us starring down the barrel of a no deal exit, when we still could be in a covid-19 crisis and the US may be in turmoil given recent events and the coming election...

It's not a pretty picture.

Meant to say - that was three years ago Shock

DGRossetti · 12/06/2020 17:09

If history rhymes, then are we seeing:

Corbyn=Foot (1979-1983);
Starmer=Kinnock(1983-1992);
?=Smith (RIP Sad) (1992-1994)
?=Blair (1994- 1997 !!!! )

so we have another 14 years of Tory misrule before any respite.

Of course the FTPA might fuck that up a bit.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 12/06/2020 17:16

Every time I hear anyone talk about "civic duty" at the daily briefing I shout "yeah, like fucking Dominic Cummings" back.
Same here. Except I do say it out loud because my DC are thoroughly bored of these briefings and go elsewhere because, in DDs words, its the same everyday. She's not far wrong tbh.

DGRossetti · 12/06/2020 17:20

Every time I hear anyone talk about "civic duty"

For some reason I just remembered ...

"Wenn ich Kultur höre ... entsichere ich meinen Browning!"

ListeningQuietly · 12/06/2020 17:28

I NEVER watch the daily briefing because our depleted household income cannot afford a new telly every day after I throw things at it.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 12/06/2020 17:35

No sign of Van-Tam all week. Looks like he's been dropped into the piranha tank.

dontcallmelen · 12/06/2020 17:43

Yy never watch it either, can ill afford new TV or crockery.

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 12/06/2020 17:43

Shappps says Business wants certainty, which is why we're not having an extension.

Certainty of what is becoming clear.

DGRossetti · 12/06/2020 18:05

Boris popping up on my Facebook feed telling me not to go to any anti racist demonstrations.

I wonder how much he's just boosted numbers by. I can't think of anything more certain to attract people than Boris dissing it.

JeSuisPoulet · 12/06/2020 18:38

Bring on the congestion in Kent now that I don't have to do the school run I am actually looking forward to this part. This is the part where my 2 local Leave friends said the planning for Op Stack would "sort it out" and they "don't expect it to be any worse than usual" on their commutes... Grin

Pussycatinboots · 12/06/2020 18:38

@Piggywaspushed

Seen this ? We wondered at the time..

*England’s chief nurse, Ruth May, was dropped from one of Downing Street’s daily coronavirus briefings after refusing to publicly back Dominic Cummings behaviour during the lockdown, according to the Independent.
A senior NHS source was quoted as saying:

A No 10 Spad [special adviser] asked her directly how she would answer the Dominic Cummings question and she refused to play along and told them she would answer the same way as Jonathan Van-Tam. She was dropped immediately from the press briefing*

That was the one we were discussing - where she was supposed to be on, then she wasn't and Matty did it single-handed. I knew something smelled shitty off about that.
DGRossetti · 12/06/2020 19:00

My old pen friend lives in Orange, CA Grin

ListeningQuietly · 12/06/2020 19:05

DGR
I would be smug but I suspect folks I know in the next county up are as bad !!!!!

Peregrina · 12/06/2020 19:13

Corbyn=Foot (1979-1983);

Partly agree, except that Foot was respected as a Senior Labour figure, but once he became Leader, he didn't really rise to the challenge. I saw him talk at a poll hustings in 1992 and he went on and on about the 1945 election - which was before I was born, so how he expected to appeal to younger voters was beyond me.

Starmer=Kinnock(1983-1992);

Starmer has more gravitas.

For most of this time the PM was Thatcher, which I think made a difference. I am just looking forward to a Tory bloodletting taking place to oust Johnson.

Peregrina · 12/06/2020 19:22

Am I alone in thinking that the boarded up statue of Winston Churchill would make an ideal place for graffiti - unless it's painted with graffiti proof paint? A sort of Berlin Wall type opportunity.

mrslaughan · 12/06/2020 19:25

@peregrina
Or one of Banksy's political commentaries

ListeningQuietly · 12/06/2020 19:27

I am sad that they have boarded up the Churchill statue.

I find it surreal that the Baden-Powell statue is being guarded by cohorts of local blue rinse (as he never actually went to that location)

Removal of statues is cathartic
but does not always serve the purpose intended.

TBH the fact that Nascar banned the confederate flag from all their venues today will have a much greater impact in thought processes

BigChocFrenzy · 12/06/2020 19:39

Peregrina I agree Foot had talent:

He was a good Parliamentarian, historical author - said to know more about the 19thC than his own ! -
no dodgy friends, would have driven out any anti-semitism without quarter

His problems were his policies, which included leaving the then Common Market / EEC and creating "Fortress Britain" - which is at least better than "Britannia Unhinged Unchained"

MrsT and most of the press were warning of the dangers of leaving the EEC and the damage to trade !

Corbyn was a dimwit with nasty friends, who learned bugger all during his carrer except a few slogans
Seamus Milne was his Cummings, pulling the strings

MockersGuidedByTheScience · 12/06/2020 19:40

Baden-Powell started his first Scout camp at Brownsea Island. His statue is looking across the harbour at it.

I see my local Labour candidate says, "According to a quick look at the internet, he was a racist, a homophobe and a Nazi sympathiser."

Well, Quite.

He was a racist, they all were. He was a closet homosexual, 'scouting for boys' and all that, and he was on the Nazis little list of prominent Brits to be detained. The Scouts were banned in Nazi Germany. RBP said they could be an alternative to the Hitler Youth, the first of several statements that seem to have been misunderstood.

Then there were the swastikas, whch the Nazis copied from him, not the other way round. RPB served in India and adopted it there.

The main charge seems to be a very oblique comment about Mein Kampf where RPB says it's a pity the Nazis don't live up to their promises. You can see it as fan worship or sarcasm.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/06/2020 19:40

"Nascar banned the confederate flag"

Excellent news
They reach / depend on a relevant demographic, so that was brave

ListeningQuietly · 12/06/2020 19:57

Mockers
I know about Brownsea.
But the statue is in a place that did not exist 20 years ago Wink

BigChoc
DS told me about the NASCAR and he rates it as a really big thing because their crowds are frankly Dukes of Hazzard
it bodes well for limiting the Trump impact over the coming months ......

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 12/06/2020 20:00

Re the confirmation UK is not going to ask for an extension: it's the hope that kills you. At least Sturgeon and Drake Ford tried. (No Foster.....?)

ListeningQuietly · 12/06/2020 20:18

There will be no extension.
Most of us knew that last December.
It will be a shit show
Most of us knew that in June 2016
The most vulnerable will be hit hardest just as they are trying to recover from COVID
Most of us realised that in the spring

Many of the posters on this thread myself included
have been able to prepare for what is coming
sadly that provides fuck all comfort

yoikes · 12/06/2020 20:23

LQ
I'm not even sure that I know what to plan for anymore...
I've still got some of my Brexit stash. Am adding to it. Trying to save. Feeling fairly defeated atm.
Very worried about the summer (july/august)
Think I'll be busy :(

Peregrina · 12/06/2020 20:33

I will have no qualms about building up a brexit stash now. At least we have six months to prepare.
