Today is the last scheduled day for talks with the EU.

We have til 30th June to ask for a transition extension. We won't.

That leaves us starring down the barrel of a no deal exit, when we still could be in a covid-19 crisis and the US may be in turmoil given recent events and the coming election...

It's not a pretty picture.

Funny how when they say "take control" now, whilst in charge, it seems somehow to confirm the rudderless ship we are all on.

MaxNormal · 12/06/2020 15:20

Just popping up to call Gove and Johnson a pair of fucking cunts.

OldLace · 12/06/2020 15:21

@Prettybird Yup! Angry

Apparently Gove said: 'the moment for an extension has now passed'.

Utter, utter fuckwittery! Angry

Piggywaspushed · 12/06/2020 15:33

Seen this ? We wondered at the time..

*England’s chief nurse, Ruth May, was dropped from one of Downing Street’s daily coronavirus briefings after refusing to publicly back Dominic Cummings behaviour during the lockdown, according to the Independent.
A senior NHS source was quoted as saying:

A No 10 Spad [special adviser] asked her directly how she would answer the Dominic Cummings question and she refused to play along and told them she would answer the same way as Jonathan Van-Tam. She was dropped immediately from the press briefing*

RedToothBrush · 12/06/2020 15:35

If there had been a clearly correct route, we would have taken it

To use the words of Obama:
“progress does not always move in a straight line.”

True @RedToothBrush but this is one hell of a detour

www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/britain-will-not-be-included-in-eu-s-covid-19-vaccine-supplies-1.4276885

The European Union plans to place advance orders for coronavirus vaccines currently under development to ensure supplies for member states, officials have said – and the United Kingdom will not be included.

(contd)

midwestsummer · 12/06/2020 15:43

A no deal Brexit is the wanted end point, it is nuts but totally unsurprising news.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jun/12/brexit-full-border-controls-on-goods-entering-uk-will-not-apply-until-july-2021
With the key sentence
Brussels officials have said the EU has no intention of relaxing checks on UK goods entering the bloc.
Operation Brock/Stack/Brock2/Stack2 will be cluttering the roads of the south once lockdown ends Sad

And letting the lorries IN quickly is worth nothing if they cannot get back OUT for a refill Hmm

HoneysuckIejasmine · 12/06/2020 15:53

God what a bunch of absolute, utter bastards.

Though thanks for continuing to refer to Gove as "tentacles slapping", pp. Makes me laugh every time.

Peregrina · 12/06/2020 16:03

I assume that they are hoping this 'firm' stance will win concessions. Do you think they will back down, quietly, when their is no choice? Then Johnson will sell it as a great deal, as he did with his worse deal than May's?

I assume these border checks that the EU will enforce are why the Tories are now screaming about their trade deal with the USA allowing cheap food? Food in the UK is cheap at the moment, so that statement at present is nonsense but if EU food is more expensive, it won't stay cheap.

However, I can't see them bringing in the same quantities of beef and chicken that we currently eat from the USA. It's not like goods coming from China which can be shoved in a container and arrive two weeks later.

Peregrina · 12/06/2020 16:04

Bring on the congestion in Kent, this is the result of their Brexit vote.

First comment I saw elsewhere was "Good. Now the EU will stop grandstanding and get real."

The old adage about not worrying what other people think of you if you knew how rarely they did applies here. I would be amazed if Brexit ever reaches 15 in the EUs "Top 10 things to do" from hereonin. Certainly from reading a few distinctly non-English sources.

Peregrina · 12/06/2020 16:16

There, not their!

I think the EU will do what minimises the damage for its members. The UK is the one which chose to leave. They will live with that.

DGRossetti · 12/06/2020 16:20

I think the EU will do what minimises the damage for its members.

I think it's already done it. Typical underhand foreign johnnies eh ? It's almost like they didn't trust us from the off.

Be fascinated to see how Boris' personal appeal to EU workers goes. Although I can imagine ... maybe we need a thread "how many languages can you say fuck off in ?"

dontcallmelen · 12/06/2020 16:37

Entirely agree with you Max Just when you think couldn’t be anymore fuckwittery from those utter utter stupid bastards.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/06/2020 16:41

Re centrists not reading the room:

As soon as Corbyn was elected leader, I knew Labour hadn't read the room, not if they wanted to ever be elected

He has said some things, done some things, been cosy with people who have really done some things ....
which lost a good chunk of Labour 2015 voters
and lost the chance of attracting centrist or liberal-leaning Tory voters

1983 is the last time the Labour left was hammered for being so self-indulgent
and then it took many years of good moderate leadership to rebuild Labour into a party that could actually win a GE
instead of just being a party of venters and posers

However, the Tories then were a lot more competent, whereas the shambolic performances over Brexit and COVID has lost them a lot of support - maybe just temporary, but at least something for Starmer to work with.

This seems as good a time as any to post up this meme that a friend included in her daily collation on FB Wink

I suspect that tentacles slapping may have come close Grin

"I would be amazed if Brexit ever reaches 15 in the EUs "Top 10 things to do" from hereonin."

It's been a complete non-issue here since February
and we'll have far more important concerns well into 2021

The last thing we want to do atm is risk damaging the Single Market,
which is what making concessions to the UK would mean

It was estimated that No Deal Brexit would reduce German GDP by 0.7%
COVID is expected to reduce GDP by 6.5% this year, before hopefully it V-shapes and rockets back in 2021 - compared to all that, Brexit looks trivial now.

DGRossetti · 12/06/2020 16:55

So, you're living in the EU, and have a pick of where you can work, including Germany or France which should pick up quite quickly with a coherent and clear Covid policy.

Why that actual fuck would you come to the UK in recession (so depressed wages), face the shitstorm of racism we know still exists (since Boris is our PM) and a Covid plan which would have been rejected by Mel Brooks as "too ridiculous" ?

With the added twist that if you can speak English, you can still easily work across the EU anyway.

prettybird · 12/06/2020 16:56

I'm just back from my weekly shop. I've started stockpiling again : little and often will be my mantra. Smile

Except bread flour Grin Bread flour I'm going to buy in 16kg or 10kg sacks Grin - and multiples thereof Wink. Wessex Mills charge £6.35 for 0 - 19.9 kg and £3.00 for 20 - 30kg, so I think I'll order 2 10kg sacks of their bread flour, which I've used recently to make some really nice loaves.

Every time I hear anyone talk about "civic duty" at the daily briefing I shout "yeah, like fucking Dominic Cummings" back. (Usually in my head because I have small children). I would go along with any advise given to me (because I'm not going anywhere anyway) but I would be tempted to say "sure, will just pop up to Durham for some sightseeing first though" and hang up.
Peregrina · 12/06/2020 17:00

As soon as Corbyn was elected leader, I knew Labour hadn't read the room, not if they wanted to ever be elected

Whereas Blair intended to get elected and ran a tight ship to that end. OK call him Tory lite etc. but until the major blunder with war with Iraq, New Labour did a lot of good things, especially compared with the incompetents now running the show.

prettybird · 12/06/2020 17:03

Just looking at my "Memories" that came up on FB today. This one was posted by a friend and he tagged me (and a whole load of other friends) as he knew we'd appreciate it - as will you lot Grin
