Today is the last scheduled day for talks with the EU.

We have til 30th June to ask for a transition extension. We won't.

That leaves us starring down the barrel of a no deal exit, when we still could be in a covid-19 crisis and the US may be in turmoil given recent events and the coming election...

It's not a pretty picture.

Signing petitions, marching. It all appears to do no good, but at least you can tell your grandchildren that no, you didn't just blindly accept what was going on, you did protest against it. I wish there was more that we could do though.

Peregrina · 05/06/2020 12:04

I have just signed the petition, and had an email thanking me from the campaigns team at the NFU. How many of those farmers voted Tory, I wonder?

QueenOfThorns · 05/06/2020 12:04

I gave up on sourdough after a few attempts as I decided it wasn’t meant to be! I still have plenty of yeast, luckily, and will be stocking up (as soon as it’s back in Tesco). I am currently trying to perfect krentenbollen (Dutch currant buns).

prettybird, please tell me what you have in your no-deal Brexit greenhouse, I could do with more ideas!

pointythings · 05/06/2020 12:10

I signed that petition this morning for all the good it will do me.

So many farmers up in arms now - would any of them admit they voted Leave? Or Tory?

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/06/2020 12:13

Barnier on now saying the UK is ignoring the PD it negotiated and signed. "The document is available in all languages, including English..."

It's not my decision, obviously. But I'm not sure I want grandchildren. DW is the same.

MockersxxxxxxxSocialDistancing · 05/06/2020 12:17

Tim Davie is new BBC director general...

Aka Mr Pepsi, who wanted to shut down 6Music and Asian Network and replace them with Radio 2 Extra.

BBC can fuck right off.

rather than denying they voted that way, it would be more persuasive (if self deprecating) to point out they were lied to and conned.

I'm sorry, but someone voted for Brexit. If everyone denies it now, then it's not possible to argue against it, if that makes sense.

sonicshoegazes · 05/06/2020 12:23

Barnier seems to be losing his shit with the UK and BJ. It's also obvious he thinks Gove is a twat (I'm in agreement)

Looks like a no deal Brexit. BJ and the right have really fucked up the UK haven't they!

Off to find a few years supply of yeast and flour...ffs.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 05/06/2020 12:27

Thanks red

Singasonga · 05/06/2020 12:34

Well, I suppose it would have been silly to have expected the Brexit promises to stand up to scrutiny when they were being sold by a man who changed "having cake and eating it" from its traditional meaning of greedily wanting the impossible into an achievable negotiating outcome.

Haven't been on these threads in months but glad to see they're still going! Just saw Michel Barnier on the Beeb and felt abruptly pulled back into No Deal Brexit reality. Sad Things really look bad, don't they. I shouldn't be surprised.

I found some decent bread flour online a few weeks ago and it has been the nicest bread I've made so far. I am transitioning back to gluten foods, so far so good. Got enough flour and yeast to last this summer, but I presume a recession will be hard on the heels of Coronavirus and am keeping my stash going, indeed, planning to increase it.

RedToothBrush · 05/06/2020 12:37

We currently have 22kg of bread flour plus 10kg of pizza flour in the house. We have pizza at least once a week and we are currently getting through seven 500g loaves a week, so it doesn't last as long as you might think.

DH is the baker. His top tip to save yeast is to prove dough overnight in the fridge and to then prove in a second time after you put the loaf in the tin. This means you have use a fraction of the yeast (recipe says 7grams, he uses 1g) but still have a great bread. Its all about being patient with your dough apparently. Also to put a small bowl of water in the oven when you bake to make the air humid, not just hot.

Not gone down the sour dough route. Friends have got fed up of it, and switched to DH's method instead. So he must be doing something right. Especially as its passes the 5 year old monster test (who has discovered warm fresh bread is the best thing ever - he ate half a loaf in one sitting the other day).

But yes, will definitely be stocking up on certain things. Tinned tomatoes and pasta again...

Where are you all getting your flour from??

TheMShip · 05/06/2020 12:48

yoikes Local flour mill, does 16kg bags. I have one each of plain, strong white, and strong wholemeal. It's really quite nice, so the rest of the family tells me (I'm gluten intolerant). Yeast has been much more difficult to obtain, I am trying out a big 500g packet I got off amazon as I can't get my usual tins of Allinsons anywhere.

NFU research shows the vast majority of farmers voted Leave and vote Tory. I struggle to fell sorry for them tbh.

prettybird · 05/06/2020 13:02

Crunchycarrot - apparently sourdough is better for gluten intolerant people as the process partially "eats" non technical term Wink the gluten. I've had my best success with the (appropriately named for you Wink) Clever Carrot Beginners Sourdough recipe - and I'm now confident enough to start adding a wee bit more water (and cook from cold for 55 minutes at 230C conventional oven in my le Creuset casserole aka a Dutch Oven)

https://www.theclevercarrot.com/2014/01/sourdough-bread-a-beginners-guide/ - actual recipe waaaaay down at the bottom. Includes a link on how to make a starter (although I already had one). I never do the float test - just go by whether the starter is approximately doubling and looking nice and bubbly.

I'm now also looking up other recipes that use sourdough discard (although I rarely gave any now) such as sourdough brownies, croissants, Chelsea buns, morning rolls ..... (such a shame that I'm low carbing HmmConfused) I've already successfully made crumpets using discard.

It doesn't matter.

Will we continue to polarise between Leave and Remain? I think it's safe to say that people did NOT vote for what they are getting: indeed, the Leave campaign assured everyone that Project Fear was never going to happen.

Now it is happening. Both Leave and Remain voters have a right to be aggrieved. Remainers, because they saw it coming; Leavers, because they were lied to.

mrslaughan · 05/06/2020 13:05

I am getting bulk bags from dove farm (16kg?) and Shipton mill - as they are both organic.
But also hay gates (our local mill) is also doing bulk bags.
Red - can you share your DH bread recipe?

Thank you!

Is the Brexit Arms still a thing?

I have been encountering a few of its regulars on some unpleasant threads lately wondering if they follow Red around

Sunak presumably has something similar planned to stimulate the UK economy as soon as lockdown has been lifted sufficiently for it to be of maximum use:

German GDP expected to fall by 6.3% in 2020 due to COVID crisis.

7 million workers are temporarily furloughed.

So Merkel’s Grand Coalition announcedhuge German economic stimulus package worth €130 billion,
nearly 4% of GDP

This is in addition to the €1.1 trillion rescue package agreed in March,
of loan guarantees, subsidies and a reduced working hours to avoid job cuts.

Aim is to stimulate household spending and support business

  • 3% VAT cut to run from 1.7 to 31.12.2020

  • “Kinderbonus” of €300 for every child (no limit wrt family size)

  • boost to green transition.
Govt contribution for BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) will rise from €3k to €6k with the manufacturer's contribution remaining at €3k
    Total = €9k for BEV price < €40k

  • Companies in sectors hardest hit by the crisis - such as hospitality, tourism and entertainment - will receive "bridging help" worth €25bn June-August

  • Restaurants, hotels & event management companies can get up to 80% of their fixed operating costs reimbursed if their income has dropped > 70% compared to a year ago.

LOL at the recipe name! Grin Yes I used to make sourdough when I first went gluten free (I don't like it much, though). I was GF for 3 years and dairy free for one due to having Hashi's, was advised by numerous 'experts' on forums that this would reduce my antibodies (didn't), but I believe both choices made my health worse so I'm bringing them back. I don't react to gluten in any obvious way. So I am rebelling! Grin

I do a double prove of my bread, not an overnight one though. First prove is about 1 hour or a bit more, then second one is around 20-30 mins. I bought my flour from buywholefoodsonline, you can buy up to 16 kg bags.
