Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

The DUP should have considered what they really wanted before opposing things for the sake of it previously. But, the confidence and supply agreement no longer exists as it's a new parliamentary term, which brought it to an end, so they're free to do and say exactly what they want without breaking that agreement.

They find themselves in a very bizarre place right now, I imagine! (I have no sympathy.)

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/10/2019 09:14

Thanks red. Good luck marchers.

TokyoSushi · 19/10/2019 09:16

PMK DH at work so I have allowed the DC uninterrupted access to the WiFi and I'm settling in for the day.

No 10 plans to send MPs home if they vote for Letwin - but govt will introduce the bill on Monday

PotterHead1985 · 19/10/2019 09:20

Oops. Posted on the other thread then copped this one!! As I said too early!!!

Looks like Super Saturday will now be more of a damp squib!

pemberlyshades · 19/10/2019 09:24

PMK. Anyone else feeling nauseous about today? It feels like a slow motion car crash.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 19/10/2019 09:26

Me! I've just scoffed an overflowing bowl of dry golden grahams and now need more tea.

UltimateFoole · 19/10/2019 09:28

I will be marching today. I'll be the one weeping inconsolably and clutching a red toothbrush.

I cannot stand by and let this government take our wonderful country out of the EU without proper democratic parliamentary scrutiny of the agreement.

Random18 · 19/10/2019 09:29

Looks as if today is going to be a waste of time. Johnson will send Tory MPs home after his statement.

How is this democratic and what the f*ck happens next?

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 09:29

This government acts like a tantrumming toddler, doesn't it? Pathetic.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 19/10/2019 09:31

I'm laughing at Sky news saying No 10 have raised the white flag considering how bozo keeps calling the Benn Act the Surrender Act. Ah the irony.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 09:32

So the government will pull the vote and send MPs home if the Letwin motion passes, according to Sky News:

Number 10 source: Government will pull vote if Letwin amendment passes
Our Chief Political Correspondent Jon Craig says: "It is the government running up the white flag.
"It is the government seemingly acknowledging that the Letwin amendment is going to pass.
"That is the prediction of most MPs I've spoken to this morning.
"It probably means a messy end to the day, and it means that the PM will be under pressure to ask for a short extension. Will he? He told a Scottish court he would."

That's the key question: will he send the letter? Hmm

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 09:33

If the vote on the Deal is delayed, the Benn Act kicks in and Johnson has to ask for an extension. Which will be granted.

mrslaughan · 19/10/2019 09:36

Well I hope that if he does send the MPs home - that they all go in great numbers and join the March - all those MP's from across the political spectrum would make a fantastic sight.....

bellinisurge · 19/10/2019 09:36

If this was a trustworthy PM, the Letwin Amendment wouldn't have happened.
As you sew, so shall you reap.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 09:37

'Has to' and BoZo don't always correlate though, do they? Because he thinks he's above the law.

So, let's see what Court hearings we can squeeze in next week!

TiddleToddle · 19/10/2019 09:37

I'm a bit confused - what does the Letwin amendment do?

derxa · 19/10/2019 09:38

.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 09:38

@TiddleToddle, it gives MPs time to conduct due diligence on the deal to decide if they want to back it or not.

PotterHead1985 · 19/10/2019 09:38

Yea the letwin amendment has me confused.

Also Bozo is waffling!

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 09:39

BoZo always waffles. It's just what he does.

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 19/10/2019 09:40

My heart rate has just gone up. Yes he's waffling. Always does abs fiddles with his inside pocket.

Songsofexperience · 19/10/2019 09:40

Hello everyone! Just popping back in to say I've had a difficult couple of weeks and can't make it to the march (first brexit one I'm not attending) but I'll be there in spirit and will try and keep up with the news...
I have a deep sense of loss today but I'm convinced now is not the time to give up. The struggle to keep our rights is only just beginning.

mrslaughan · 19/10/2019 09:40

I am worried about all this talk of the Letwin amendment passing - will make MP's complacent. Cummings always has a devious alternative.......I won't be able to calm down until I know he has sent the letter.......

And what's this about presenting the deal on Monday? What difference does Saturday vs Monday make?
