Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

Good luck to the marchers! Let's hope you influence the MPs who you'll be marching close to. Maybe proximity will actually have an effect? We can but hope!

redchocolatebutton · 19/10/2019 07:28

pmk
thank you red and the interim housekeeper of last thread

frumpety · 19/10/2019 07:29

PMK Good luck to the marchers, got to go to work, but with you in spirit Star

surlycurly · 19/10/2019 07:34

Pmk with interest. Today could be the mother of all days.

DGRossetti · 19/10/2019 07:40

Todays vote feels like the closing scenes of "The Godfather" where "all the families scores are being settled today".

Except, unlike in the film, Team Boris is relying on the morons opposing them to conveniently line up in single file to be taken out with a single bullet.

And astoundingly (and it would have been a very different film had it been filmed this way) not only do the opponents think it's a good idea and are standing still to make it easier. They're even having a gentlemans agreement on what order to stand in with each other.

Would that be a fair characterisation ?

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 19/10/2019 07:42

Thanks red
Need a kitty today.

Pmk

mrslaughan · 19/10/2019 07:43

Which way is Rory the Tory voting? I suspect with the government- but if he ever wants to be mayor of London - surely he needs to oppose?

I just can't believe these Labour MP's - assurances from a proven liar.....are they thick!!!!

CrunchyCarrot · 19/10/2019 07:53

Peter Bone has fallen for Johnson's lies as well. Interviewed on the BBC a little while ago, he said that he would vote for the deal provided we'd be out of the transition period by 31 December 2020, and apparently Johnson told him that would happen. Yeah, right.

Driedlimes · 19/10/2019 07:55

Does anyone know what the 'assurances' actually are - Caroline Flint linked something on twitter but it just led to gov website? If it was simply words spoken is she actually for real?

It should be blindingly obvious to anyone who can read that moving the LPF provisions from the WA to the PD means that there is no intention to honour them.

It's odd to me that these standards are seen as left wing in the UK - in the rest of Europe they are often much stronger (eg France) & the minimum standards are entirely mainstream.

Who would want to live in a society without them?

I want to get having a baby done, so that I can move on to other priorities like going out drinking with my friends, hosting dinner parties, going on exciting holidays and reading loads of novels.

Just time wasting now before heading to London in a couple of hours. As an exiled Teessider I am feeling guilty that I hop on a train at a civilised time when so many people were up at silly o'clock. Feels like I am not trying hard enough or something.

GingerPCatt · 19/10/2019 07:55

These boots are made for marching and that’s just what they’re gonna do. Today these boots are marching for EU (and all the Westminsterenders - whether they like it or not!)

PMK, suspect I missed an entire thread..

Dontlickthetrolley · 19/10/2019 08:02

@Crunchy Peter Bone is an ERGer who wants a no deal, so he'd be quite happy to accept BJs promises knowing it's going to be No Deal by stealth Angry

BestIsWest · 19/10/2019 08:04

Good luck everyone going on the March today and thank you. Wish I could be here - was on last years and it was amazing.

Voila212 · 19/10/2019 08:05

If a border in Northern Ireland doesn't work and a border down the Irish sea doesn't work? What does posters on here suggest. As far as I can see brexit is incompatible with the GFA so the UK can't leave the EU or leave but remain in the custom union and single market.

mathanxiety · 19/10/2019 08:06

“civil disobedience on a large scale has been discussed, as well as a large rally” to resist Brexit deal
(RTB)

Great timing, with Guy Fawkes around the corner Sad.

They appear to have forgotten that the result of the Referendum in NI was 56-44 Remain.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2019 08:06

Morning all.
Do we have a timetable of when votes are expected?

I'm mainlining tea before I head off on the train.

StartupRepair · 19/10/2019 08:14

Watching from Australia with much solidarity. Awful to see the UK on this cliff edge. Thinking of you all marching.

OhDear2200 · 19/10/2019 08:16

Shameless marking place...been a lurker

🙈🙈🙉🙉🙈🙈

LittlePickleHead · 19/10/2019 08:18

On my own with two kids today, one of whom has other things going on which will make it tricky to attend. I feel guilty as I've been to the other two marches, but I have family staying who've travelled the length of the country to march today so at least have representation.

Feel on verge of tears today. It really does feel like it's all over and not sure I can face following the news. It's like waking up to the news of the referendum and trump all over again - except this really is it this time.

Sorry very defeatist now but I'm really feeling like all hope of compromise and a even vaguely not bad outcome has gone.

Notonthestairs · 19/10/2019 08:23

Delurking to PMK. Suspect if all the lurkers PMKed we would immediately fill multiple threads!

Thank you to all those that contribute to these threads. I've been reading for a couple of years now and it's been an education.

We've marched before but can't today. Thank you to those that can.

TheVanguardSix · 19/10/2019 08:26

PMK with gratitude for the new thread and cat pics!

GeistohneGrenzen · 19/10/2019 08:29

SunnyUplandsOhNoTurnipSoup · 19/10/2019 08:31

I'm marching today with my mum. Will look out for red toothbrushes!
