Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

Sorry just before I pop off. Are people on the mainland aware that there has been a marked increase in so called punishment shootings in NI in the last few weeks? At least one shooting per night. From past experience this is usually a precursor to some sort of kicking off from paramilitaries here.

Me150267 · 19/10/2019 00:17

Pmk

Guineapig456 · 19/10/2019 00:22

PMK

Butterymuffin · 19/10/2019 00:26

Appalled at any Labour MPs backing this. I hope if the whip isn't removed, at least their colleagues make it clear what they think of so badly letting down the classes they are meant to serve.

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 00:26

Have a good night mother - and gorgeous pets.

No, I didn't know that particularly. I did know there appear to be money-raising activities going on - which is alarming.

I'm utterly depressed as to where this may lead.

So. I'll cease with that and just send you lots of love. Xxx

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/10/2019 00:44

if anyone's still up, what time are we expecting votes tomorrow?

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 00:51

Maybe around 2:30.

Basilpots · 19/10/2019 00:52

Morher no there is very little reporting of NI over here as I’m sure you will not be surprised to hear. Apart from the tragedy of Lyra McKee and I recall some unrest surrounding a bonfire a while ago I have heard nothing, but it’s always lovely to hear the experiences of a ‘real’ person although I appreciate the news from your side of things is not at all good.

Thoughts are with you.

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 00:52

We need to go to bed. 🙂

But I'm finding it impossible. ☹️

RedToothBrush · 19/10/2019 01:01

Caroline Flint @carolineflintmp
Labour MPs have secured legally binding protection on workers’ rights, environmental standards & consumer protection & a parliamentary lock on deciding our future partnership. Plus improving unfair dismissal protections & tackling TUPE anomalies.

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/prime-ministers-office-10-downing-street

Its not legally binding you monumental fuck wit.

I expect MPs to know the difference between legally binding and politically binding.

I also expect them to pay attention to politics and how the PM fucked over others by ignoring a politically binding arrangement (Go talk to Arlene, Caroline).

Absolute tool if this is really what she thinks. It's wishful bloody thinking not legally binding.

Jamie Bryson @jamiebrysonCPNI
If NI can’t have Brexit with the rest of the UK, then there should be no Brexit until we can all leave together as one Union. If the Betrayal Act passes, the DUP should switch sides & vote with the Remain Parliament to revoke Article 50.

Lewis Goodall@lewis_goodall
This is from a hardline loyalist. Says if NI can’t Brexit on same terms as rest of the UK the DUP should vote for revocation of A50. In dispatching the DUP in the way they did, wonder if Downing St have much idea of what they might have unleashed...

Not sure I buy that this will make a difference tomorrow ultimately but this isn't insignificant either.

Oh, I don't think she really believes it for a minute, Red.

But it makes it easier for her to live with.

Let's face it, it's quite a something to. S elected as a Labour MP and to then use that position to vote in favour of a far- right counter-revolution.

It's grubby and just wrong.

So any kind of fig leaf that helps you face yourself in the mirror the day after will be clutched.

🤷‍♀️

PanemEtCircenses · 19/10/2019 01:12

If the Betrayal Act passes, the DUP should switch sides & vote with the Remain Parliament to revoke Article 50.

I’m certain I first read on Westminstenders that the DUP would rather revoke than have this withdrawal agreement.

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 01:33

You see, I find this shameful.

Literally shameful.

Sarah Champion knows this is not true.

She knows she is preparing to act in contravention of every principle she ever professed to have.

That is a shameful thing to do.

PMK. May unknowingly see some of you on the march, later today!

OffTheShelfElf · 19/10/2019 02:02

PMK. And wondering whether I can get hold of a red tooth brush in time for today's march.

TheNumberfaker · 19/10/2019 06:08

If I see any red toothbrushes I will say hello. I had the best march ever in July when I bumped into @borntobequiet
I’m still hoping for the best but (mentally) preparing myself for the worst. It is so reassuring to see and talk to other likeminded souls in the flesh. (Born, we filled all our coaches!)

TheElementsSong · 19/10/2019 06:19

PMK and thank you to everyone marching today. I'll be with you in spirit!

NotJustACigar · 19/10/2019 06:23

Pmk see you at the march, or feel you there in spirit, all.

Copied and slightly edited from my post yesterday regarding the motions and amendments:

Two motions have been tabled by the government. The government is currently expected to move Motion 1, and only to move Motion 2 in the event of a defeat on the former. Amendments have been tabled for both motions. The Speaker will select which of these will be debated.

Motion 1. That this house approves the BJ deal.

Amendments:
a. Letwin (former Conservative, co-signatories across opposition parties). House has considered the matter but withholds approval unless and until implementing legislation is passed.
b. MacNeil (SNP). Revoke.
c. Blackford (SNP). Does not approve deal, ask for extension to 31 Jan 2020 for purpose of GE.

Motion 2. That this house approves leaving without a deal on 31 Oct 2019.

Amendments:

a. Kyle-Wilson (Labour, co-signatories across opposition parties). Rejects leaving without a deal and supports a confirmatory referendum on any deal.

The schedule begins with a statement from the PM, then questions on that statement. Motion 1 expected to be moved after that, then the Speaker announces which amendments have been selected.

I'll check later this morning for any additional amendments tabled, but these are taken from the HoC order papers and it's very clear that the PV amendment is on Motion 2 and thus may not be debated at all.

Sostenueto · 19/10/2019 07:12

PMK and good luck to marchers!
I don't know whether I can watch what happens today. I feel so sad about everything to do about Brexit, this Government, Parliament and democracy as a whole. I feel I am watching in slow motion the demise of a once great and proud United Kingdom. Think I need chocolate.........Sad

bellinisurge · 19/10/2019 07:17

Pmk. Stay safe on the march everyone.
Thank you, Red.
Thank you , everyone.

CrunchyCarrot · 19/10/2019 07:18

Thanks for the thread, Red

Preparing for a huge day in Parliament. Good luck to all the marchers!
