Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

So did Frances Ryan abstain?

Seems to me that deep down, no one apart from erg and certain other Ultras actually WANT to leave. }
if leaving were such a totally brilliant idea, the UK could have departed a couple of years ago. what has happened is simply the result of politicians talking bollocks.

placemats · 19/10/2019 15:35

JRG has just left the chamber to shouts of outrageous.

54321go · 19/10/2019 15:37

While 'chick' is obviously inappropriate, I also have doubts about 'honourable member' when referring to a significant number of the HoC.

There’s got to be a high chance of a VONC on Monday now...

It won’t be an easy one to call though. You’d expect that the DUP would obviously vote against the Government, or at least abstain.... but then again, there’s a chance, perverse as it may seem given recent events, that they would support the Government if you consider the consequences for them.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 15:37

Looks like Letwin will need to put in his amendment again - and will be supported in doing so by Bercow Grin

placemats · 19/10/2019 15:37

In addition to those six Labour members who voted against, four Labour members abstained.

Sarah Champion
Rosie Cooper
Melanie Onn
Derek Twigg

Of course, it is JRM

ChazsBrilliantAttitude

Thanks so much!

So this is GOOD NEWS re the Letwin amendment, yes?
or just a delay of the inevitable?

prettybird · 19/10/2019 15:41

Lowering the tone.....does Bercow have a catheter bag so that he doesn't need to go to the loo while he's in the chair?! Wink

There has never been an answer to the prevarication. Brexit as they want it will be a failed concept.

All Johnson wants is adulation that he managed to Leave EU on 31/10. Doesn't matter that years of strife await, no it is the Adrenalin of success in his mind.

PMBJ seriously believed he'd breeze in, blather a bit, then lo and behold a British bulldog and Union Jack bunting for everyone on 1/11. He's like my toddler son, "but I waaaaaaaant it". (He's much less charming than my son).

prettybird · 19/10/2019 15:46

Maybe that's why the Speaker has a gown! Grin

Timeywimey10 · 19/10/2019 15:48

Letwin has closed off the no deal due to failure to legislate loophole

Yes but pity they didn't close off the loophole for 31 December 2020. When/if they approve the deal they need to make sure the transition period is extended to the maximum, too. I can't see the EU will refuse to extend the transition period, we'd continue to pay during that time.

Boris Johnson says the law does not require him to 'negotiate' a delay and he will tell the EU that further delay will be bad for the UK and the EU

In what world would the necessary legislation be put in place by 31 October? Quite apart from the fact that the EU Parliament has to approve the deal too. He really is a twit.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 15:50

I'm still maintaining and adding to my stockpile (especially Christmas preparations) until 31 October, after which I might be able to start using it because it's not immediately needed not holding my breath though Sad

MockersthefeMANist · 19/10/2019 15:51

Speaker's Chair incorporates a concealed commode.

Hustings for new speaker is available on iplayer. It's looking like a shoe-in for Lynsey Hoyle, with only Elanor Laing putting up a credible alternative case. But it's Labour's turn, and she is rather right-wing, if charming with it, so stands little chance.

TatianaLarina · 19/10/2019 15:52

Not enough mettle for that sadly.

DarkAtEndOfUk · 19/10/2019 15:55

Or something. I still think the confirmatory referendum is the only way out. The bloody Lib Dems have seriously got my goat over the VONC issue.
FFS POLITICIANS SORT YOURSELVES OUT. ADMIT IT CAN'T WORK. ADMIT IT'S THE EU, OR THE US-AND-NO-MORE-UK. Darn that slipped out there didn't it.
