Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

So does the Speaker have a cowboy flap on his trousers which he can discreetly undo? Wink

placemats · 19/10/2019 15:59

'I have been blindsided' says Bercow.

This is serious from the speaker.

Hoooo · 19/10/2019 15:59

It's probably a commode.....

placemats · 19/10/2019 16:03

On the other hand, Johnson has double incontinence.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 16:05

Back to being serious Grin: the Speaker does seem to be mightily pissed off at Smug's shenanigans and attempted abuse of procedure.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 16:06

There won't be a VoNC on Monday as we don't have an extension yet. VoNC then would = no deal on 31 Oct.

ClashCityRocker · 19/10/2019 16:08

So he has until 11pm tonight to send the letter?

When will it be confirmed that it has indeed been sent?

Kyvia · 19/10/2019 16:11

The Letwin motion today withholds approval of Boris’s deal until legislation is passed

Does that not mean though that the deal has been approved by Parliament, pending the legislation being passed?

That’s what the BBC news app seems to say

They backed a motion, tabled by independent MP Sir Oliver Letwin, which "withholds approval" for Boris Johnson's Brexit deal until legislation implementing it has been passed.
It was due to be followed by a vote on the main government motion - whether or not to back the deal.
The motion - amended because of the vote on Sir Oliver's amendment - was approved without MPs going into the division lobbies.

This is all very, very confusing

fartingrainbows · 19/10/2019 16:16

I'm trying really, really hard to understand all of this Brexit mess, but can somebody please answer me this.... can I use/eat/give away my stockpile yet?

fedup21 · 19/10/2019 16:17

Does that not mean though that the deal has been approved by Parliament, pending the legislation being passed?

Yes, this is what I don’t get?

Snowy111 · 19/10/2019 16:23

Carr (the guy with the PV amendment) speaking on BBC1 now raising the question again - why could the meaningful vote not have happened today? This was purely a BJ decision, the letwin amendment didn’t force a delay until Monday. So why has BJ delayed, he could have had his vote today?

Yes it wouldn’t have stopped him writing the letter, but he might have got the numbers to move forward Confused

Snowy111 · 19/10/2019 16:25

Not Carr, Kyle!

Oakenbeach · 19/10/2019 16:26

Fair point... but VONC surely once extension is agreed.

Snowy111 · 19/10/2019 16:27

To the confused - after the letwin amendment was approved, BJ refused to allow his deal to be voted on, so the BJ deal has not been approved

Dontlickthetrolley · 19/10/2019 16:28

Another confusing thing, one of many, Sky were saying that it will get its second reading of the bill on Tuesday. When was the first and when did that pass???

violettrose28 · 19/10/2019 16:30

do Remainers really want No Deal? That's what we're marching towards.
It's not a question of if, but when we leave. Surely better to get the hell on with it?

LouiseCollins28 · 19/10/2019 16:33

What on earth would be the point of a “meaningful” vote today, when Parliament had already voted to “withhold support” i.e. by proxy to vote against the deal?!

Lots of MPs after the fact are now saying they will vote for “Deal” they had the chance to do that today, they have chosen not to. For a 4th time a Brexit Deal has been offered to the House and they have again said No.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 16:33

Did Letwin specify a delay? Surely 2 days isn't long enough to consider the deal either.

It said that it withholds approval until all essential legislation in place. So, essentially, won't approve (or otherwise) until legislation is in place. I think.

The WAB / WAIB is the implementation Bill, NOT the deal. It's what is needed to implement the WA (i.e. part of the legislation which Letwin requires).

I have no idea when its first reading was though. I must've been asleep.

Outsomnia · 19/10/2019 16:33

Can I just shout out to those who must draft new legislation ?

In a former life I was one of them. The pressure to get it absolutely watertight is immense. And that was when there was adequate time. I left it for a better life so I know.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 16:34

I am confused as to whether the deal is being brought back next week or just the WAB / WAIB though (which is clear by my post above! Grin ).

PostNotInHaste · 19/10/2019 16:36

I think I heard Letwin say that this still possible to leave by 31 October and he would be working towards that.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/10/2019 16:38

First readings of Bills is purely a formality to introduce the Bill to the House. The second reading is where the fun starts.

prettybird · 19/10/2019 16:38

I got the impression that Bercow might not allow Smug's intended business on Monday (ie bringing back a constrained debate on the deal via a specific part of the Withdrawal Act - ie trying to force an early MV) - especially given Letwin's amendment passing.

As much as anything, Smug's announcement of Monday's business via a Point of Order makes it very difficult for anyone to put forward amendments - which is hardly democratic Hmm
