I think he's done it so Boris the clown will happily write the letter and then thee EU will say "OK we've extended your membership for 200 years".

Why should this deal pass when mays were never close? Is it any different

If he doesn't then he's breaking the law.
He may choose to do that.
But knowing the answer will be no, why won't he?

Stealth, sorry - wasn't being patronising. Didn't realise from your OP and literally heard it on the radio as I was reading the thread.

Juncker doesn't get final say on extension. It would be up to the EU Council. So they could still firm up on the This Deal or No Deal stance or they could torpedo it and the Deal by indicating they would offer an Extension or even equivocating.

However looks like EU really want WA Done and Dusted before new session starts properly in November. That way they can move forward with the UK negotiating from the outside - probably suits them better even if the long term aim is / were still to persuade us to rejoin via 2nd Ref.
