Westminstenders: Why the Irish Border isn't a Remain/EU Plot

I hope the events of this week give the ERG the kick up the backside over this that they need.

I doubt it will, but I live in hope. The alternative is too horrid to contemplate.

I'll leave this here instead as a reminder of what choice Brexit was always going to come down to.

Happy Easter everyone.

Sturgeon says, if Boris Johnson were to become prime minister, the negative consequences for Scotland she outlined earlier would get even worse.

She says she has read reports that, if Johnson were to become Tory leader, the Scottish Conservatives were split from the UK party.

So their position would be that independence would be good enough for the Tories, but not good enough for Scotland Hmm

Were any of you watching Lyra McKee's funeral? Sad

Thank you!

{So his Trade Bill (which we’re fighting hard to reform) dodges this bullet by shifting power over future trade agreements to ministers, in effect writing himself a blank cheque to negotiate any deal he likes.}

Someone on here linked to a report that Fox had already taken command of all international trade dealings, possibly about 3 months ago and done very quietly. Whoever put the link on here did so because of other 'quiet' changes that were happening. It was around the time of Yellowhammer 'revelations' IIRC.

Brexit: I felt unwelcome and returned to Poland

PachYa is a Polish singer who lived in the UK for 10 years, but she no longer felt welcome in the country after Brexit. So she moved back to Poland with her daughter Amelia.

Two years later she returns to Nottingham and thinks about what she has left behind

Iambuffy · 24/04/2019 16:35

I'm voting ind in the district elections.

I'm still unsure in the EU elections.

You have to vote for 3 dont you?

Or do you have to order them all? Will feel nice putting the odious UKIP in last place.

Motherfuckers.

My choices are somewhat limited. Hold my nose time I guess

Peregrina · 24/04/2019 16:42

You have to vote for 3 dont you?

If you are voting in Great Britain in the EU elections, you have one vote. If you vote in NI then it's the STV system and you can order your choices.

Iambuffy · 24/04/2019 16:44

Ah!
Good.
Choice made then.
Its 1 lab, 1 x UKIP and 3 x Tory meps here atm.
The d'hondt system is confusing!

prettybird · 24/04/2019 16:50

Iambuffy - with the exception of Ireland, which uses STV (which means you can rank as many as you want and your vote will be transferred unless and until the requisite number of candidates have the relevant "majoirty"), the UK uses the d'Hondt system, which means that the votes will be allocated proportionally. So you only vote for one party - not even a person.

prettybird · 24/04/2019 17:02

DGR - from that Ecologist article you posted:

Fox is so set on trading with Trump that the Trade Bill he is attempting to force through Parliament fails to give MPs any meaningful vote over future trade agreements.

The ultimate irony being that the US Congress DOES have a vote over any trade deal even if Parliament doesn't Shock and will may well veto any trade deal that compromises the GFA Hmm

and

The US, meanwhile, boasts the most experienced negotiating team in the world.

Except that they are used to negotiating from a position of strength which of course they will be with the UK and telling their prospective trading partner what the terms will be Hmm That's why they hate the EU: because the EU also has an arguably more experienced negotiating team and is also negotiating from a position of strength and won't just accept what the US demands Grin. That is the reason why the TTIP talks are officially suspended - and nothing to do with the Conservatives the UK, who would quite happily have signed the deal, without any protection from companies suing governments, for the NHS or other public sector services SadAngry

Iambuffy · 24/04/2019 17:08

Yeah.
I'm decided.
Cheesed off, but decided.

prettybird · 24/04/2019 17:32

Iambuffy - pity the poor Scots. ShockWe have 4 levels of votes: 1. EU 2. Westminster (UK) 3. Holyrood (Scottish Parliament 4. Council

....and we have 4 different voting systems Shock

  1. EU: d'Hondt
  2. UK: FPTP
  3. Scotland: Hybrid d'Hondt (combination of constituency MSPs, elected on FPTP and regional list MSPs, elected using the d'Hondt system and including the number of constituency MSPs already elected to calculate the proportions of list MSPs under the d'Hondt system Confused)
  4. Council: STV
Confused
Iambuffy · 24/04/2019 17:32

Bloody hell

Sir Graham Brady confirms no changes to Tory leadership rules, but the 1922 Committee is to “seek a clear roadmap” from PM for her departure if Withdrawal Agreement not passed. A timetable, not a date.

I'm bored of this disaster film now.

I just want to know the ending.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/04/2019 18:07

Its definitely erring on the side of tedium now, isn't it?

Apparently the remain EP vote in the NW can go to Green or Lib Dem, so I'll go LD.

1tisILeClerc · 24/04/2019 18:10

{I just want to know the ending.}

I am predicting tears, so get your hankies ready.

woman19 · 24/04/2019 18:31

What a beautiful oration by the Catholic priest and family at Lyra Mc Kee's funeral, sounded like she was a wonderful and beloved young woman. I sense this is another Civil Rights moment along the road.
Great work from Sturgeon yet again 'independence and soup' as lovely Jane Godley' says Smile

Littlespaces · 24/04/2019 18:40

It is going to be like the film Gone with the Wind with a bittersweet ending.

"After all tomorrow is another day".

Whisky2014 · 24/04/2019 18:42

Fuck yeh Scottish independence here we come!

HazardGhost · 24/04/2019 18:42

Just watched the coverage of Lyra's funeral, her partner and family coped so well and they did her proud. Excellent call out by the priest, a few not all of the politicans had the decency to look a little bit ashamed.

woman19 · 24/04/2019 18:44

Or King Lear, humanity always wins in the end.Smile

Hang on, wasn't her departure only if the WA was passed ?

I really hope she tells them to fuck off to the far side of fuck and then fuck off some more.

Littlespaces · 24/04/2019 19:08

I really hope she tells them to fuck off to the far side of fuck and then fuck off some more.

This is how I feel quite a lot lately.

Iambuffy · 24/04/2019 19:09

I'm so tired of it all.

It's like watching a car crash in slo mo
