Westminstenders: Why the Irish Border isn't a Remain/EU Plot

I hope the events of this week give the ERG the kick up the backside over this that they need.

I doubt it will, but I live in hope. The alternative is too horrid to contemplate.

I'll leave this here instead as a reminder of what choice Brexit was always going to come down to.

Happy Easter everyone.

{March 2019 A new ambition to increase the number of international students studying in the UK by more than 30%–helping boost the income generated by education exports to £35 billion.}

Maybe any university lecturers might chime in as my info is a bit dated but the lack of investment in lecturing staff over the last few years with corresponding increase in student to lecturer numbers is damaging the system. As lecturers retire they are not being replaced or other largely underhand techniques are being used to boost profit of universities. In order to improve uni 'ratings' more 'professors' are being brought in as it makes the profile look good, but in many cases they hardly 'lecture' (minimal contact hours but high pay) and leave it others to to deliver the syllabus as the uni attempts to get more bums on seats. Like the government's incessant testing of children, they are killing off the essence of the university function.

You could also wonder where another 600,000 students might be housed, since there is already a shortage of housing in the UK.
Will it be relaxing on rules for houses of multiple occupancy, which can lead to seriously damaging changes to the make up of the towns/cities that have a university?

This is useful. Just click on the links for your area.

1tisILeClerc Can't speak for any other Uni cities but Plymouth has so much Student accommodation that it is renting it out for AirBnB and to anyone else who wants to rent a room.

Numbers have dropped across the board, yet because of the lag in planning, new student blocks are still being built!

My 'info' was from around 3 years ago but based on an area where the student population was causing considerable 'unrest' in the town. It is all very well bringing in students but the other infrastructure needs to be increased with it. The times of day when student and 'normal' people want to be active may also cause disharmony. Again, it is all down to thinking things through and proper planning and implementation of the plans.

I fear what Trump coming in June will really be about

Passing Malthouse would ensure no further extension, as EUCO April specifically stated (yet again for the unicorn-fanciers) that the WA could not be changed

Could passing it even cancel the current extension, or was EUCO point 4 merely stating a fact, rather than a condition of the extension ?

Special meeting of the European Council (Art. 50) (10 April 2019) – Conclusions

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/media/39042/10-euco-art50-conclusions-en.pdf

  1. The European Council reiterates that there can be no opening of the Withdrawal Agreement,
and that any unilateral commitment, statement or other act should be compatible with the letter and the spirit of the Withdrawal Agreement and must not hamper its implementation.

RTF agree Matthew Parris is ‘out of touch’ in the sense that he no longer reflects what a typical Conservative Party member thinks. He reckons that there will be two more PMs between now & Dec. I think the govt will fall as a result of elections, Parris suggests a short-lived hard right Conservative, followed by Labour (Corbyn? Probably).
In many ways Brexit is a side show - we are seeing a huge party alignment/ upheaval, which may take years. There will be a nativist party representing about 20% of people, & some sort of centrist party (ies). Conservatives are toast. This is part of the process.

thethethethethe · 28/04/2019 00:01

Do we know why Trump is coming?

Micky665544 · 28/04/2019 05:06

Animals are already microchipped and tagged - so, complaining that they can just 'wander across fields' is totally moot.

Origin of the animal can easily be ascertained by reading the microchip.

CrunchyCarrot · 28/04/2019 07:05

Thanks for that link, littlespaces, that's a really clear and easy to use site. :)

@Micky665544, please read up about the Norway-Sweden border and how they manage trading across it. There are lots of good articles, and it's clear that there's no way to have an entirely frictionless invisible border, even with the best will in the world and using some tech. We simply do not have the tech available at this point in time. I'm afraid you're deceiving yourself that it's possible.

1tisILeClerc · 28/04/2019 07:50

Micky665544
If you bothered to actually keep up with the developments of Brexit you will know that you are talking crap that has already been discussed and binned a couple of years ago. There is no technology that can 'frictionlessly' enable a border that is not a border.
If you are so clever, please submit your demonstrable 'technology' that can scan a packed lorry with maybe contents from multiple locations and correctly identify all that should be contained AND what should not be contained, all while travelling at say 40MPH.
Current scanning technology gets you part of the way there but the process takes a good 20 minutes with the vehicle stationary and still requires a physical inspection.

mathanxiety · 28/04/2019 07:57

Utter BS, Micky. Did you read the Irish Times piece on the complexity of producing Baileys and cheddar and how many times components of each product cross the border, how production and cost would be affected if tariffs were to be levied at each crossing, etc?

Or are these piffling details too boring for the big dreamers among us.

Peregrina · 28/04/2019 08:27

Prospective students can read, you know.

Even though May declared that 'the country is open for business' most people judged by her actions and not her words and decided to take themselves off elsewhere. Including a lot of leading Brexiters, who couldn't run fast enough to get their sorry legs out of the country.

Peregrina · 28/04/2019 08:28

I had a most satisfying encounter the other day, when the Tory party tried to canvass me - I slammed the door in their faces.

bellinisurge · 28/04/2019 08:46

@thethethethethe - Trump is coming because of the DDay commemorations.

@Micky665544 , you clearly don't know what you are talking about.

RedToothBrush · 28/04/2019 08:49

Trump is coming because of the DDay commemorations.

I guess we need to hope for bad weather then.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 28/04/2019 08:59

Nah @RedToothBrush . Because he's an insignificant piece of shit compared to any commemoration of those events.

Peregrina · 28/04/2019 09:08

Trump is 72. Do I assume he fought in the Vietnam War and can at least understand what War is like?

I am pretty sure that he was a draft dodger. More fool May for inviting him, it besmirches the memory of those who did fight bravely during WW2.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/04/2019 09:15

Tech to tell whether a lorry contains meat from England or from the USA
once packaged up into meat or meat products, the eartag will have gone some time ago.

Norway belongs to EEA / EFTA and is in Schengen, but goods traffic at the Norway / Sweden (EU) border has a 2 hour wait

BigChocFrenzy · 28/04/2019 09:17

Trump was a draft dodger, but it's legal when you've a super-wealthy daddy

LonelyTiredandLow · 28/04/2019 09:31

Trump is coming because Fox has sold us to him. He wants to survey his real estate and probably plan a new golf course through Westminster
