Westminstenders: Waiting for the vote that never comes

March 12th (or earlier): Second vote on May deal.
March 13th: Vote on No Deal if WA fails to pass on the 12th
March 14th: Vote on an a50 extension.

The March 14th vote is the most important, though the others are still important and we have no idea how nuclear the ERG or the moderates will ultimately go in terms of blowing the Tory Party apart.

Even if May's Deal does pass we need an extension. We've known this a long time, from a British POV, but the EU have now explicitly said that they will need a technical extension to ratify the WA if we now approve it. We also need an extension if we decide to go for No Deal because we will have legal chaos as the HoC hasn't passed the necessary legislation for No Deal either. But this isn't the EU's problem...

With feelings in the EU becoming more bitter the idea of an extension might be more difficult to come by, if May hasn't passed the WA by the 29th March though.

The EU and May are therefore both aligned with a mutual interest to get the WA passed by 29th March for this reason. Which might mean the EU do play tough on granting us an extension (at least initially) if we formally ask for one on the 14th March in order to help persuade the HoC vote for May's deal before the deadline of the 29th March.

I think we should expect the WA to fail to pass on the 12th March. There just aren't the numbers for it. Then hardball politics from the EU commence on the 14th - it might well be a long extension or nothing. May will then try and do MV3 before the 29th March. If it passes, May's happy and the EU are happy. If it fails... well... I think the EU might give way to a shorter extension at that point, but very begrudgingly. And the idea will be for MV4 or the July cliff edge.

Until then we sit waiting forever for the sun to start going around the earth and for pigs to fall out of the sky.

Hi everyone! Regular poster but name changed (concerned about recent data breaches etc). Small clue for other regular posters: I like literature

We all know how bad brexit will be for everyone, but this article highlights how it will hit women EU citizens especially hard due to an overlooked detail in the registration system.
I wonder how many more of those little 'details' will crawl out of the woodwork very soon. Is this a sign of things to come?
How prepared are we really...

Despite it all, it's our day, today:

Happy International Women's day, everyone ! 🥳

Happy international womens day to all the amazing, intelligent, funny, charming women on this thread.

You've kept me relatively sane 💐

lonelyplanetmum · 08/03/2019 11:45

I think the LibDems are going to wipe the floor with them.

Yes everyone should vote Lib Dem, Green or TIggers ( If a political party ???) in locals.

Even if you've any past trans or student fees concerns it's worth holding ones nose as a one off to vote LibDem. It sends a powerful messsge which registers with Lab and the Tory's more than anything surely?!

Littlespaces · 08/03/2019 11:46

I do hope the Tories are hit hard in the local elections but never underestimate the ability of people to blame an outsider.

19% so why are leavers bothered about Polish nurses yet not bothered about this?? lonelyplanet It is incredible isn't it?

lonelyplanetmum · 08/03/2019 11:50

Yes- the Internet interest from Russia in our elections is around 25% . It's weird and sinister yet the Leavers see no benefits in our making a united stand against Russia but are concerned about EU nurses etc... iI's just so illogical -to be frightened of ' other' but not to be frightened of the genuinely frightening 'other' iyswim.

Thanks BigChoc. I am finding the RIFT site very helpful too.

There is a piece on the BBC website about women and 'issues' with clothing. I am afraid that despite her being an attractive and presumably intelligent woman the outfit she is photographed at work wearing is not quite suitable.
I suppose as a counter to this the HoC men should wear 'speedos' in summer when at the HoC. (I wouldn't dwell on that image too long either!).

{"I tried on hundreds of clothes. Nothing worked. Until I found the red pantsuit," she tells the BBC.
The photos of Ana Paula's speech that day went viral, but not because of its contents. She got home that night to find an avalanche of messages on social media. }

From SKY news:
{Theresa May is set to tell the EU it "has to make a choice" on Brexit}
How dense can this PM be?
The EU have been waiting for nearly 3 years for her to make her damn mind up as to how the UK will go about leaving. Now she is expecting the EU to tell her the answer!
Does not bode at all well for a 'global player taking back control'.

Peregrina · 08/03/2019 12:29

Do you think Theresa May telling the EU to make a choice is really going to happen, or is that just for UK consumption? I imagine the choice will be 'get lost'.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2019 12:30

This just continues May's theme of wanting the EU to sort out the mess the UK chose to get itself in.

Right from the beginning,

Merkel reported May kept telling her "Make me an offer"
while Merkel kept replying "What do you want"

1tisILeClerc · 08/03/2019 12:31

The EU gave the 3 options to the UK in November last year so I have no idea what else they can do.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2019 12:33

Most of the UK - including some less informed Remainers - expect the EU to get the UK out of this mess Confused

It's like they feel the EU expelled the UK, instead of the UK choosing to Leave Confused

"Taking back control" must mean sorting out your own mess, that you've jumped into with both feet

Littlespaces · 08/03/2019 12:34

Excellent. If it is up to the EU they can say the best outcome is to Revoke.

Problem solved.

Oh but no, hang on a minute it is our problem. What utter dolts.

1tisILeClerc · 08/03/2019 12:36

BBC news:
{Jeremy Hunt has said relations with the EU will be “poisoned for many years to come” if Brussels fails to budge in the Brexit talks,}
Why the hell should the EU budge?
'The UK is leaving, sort yourselves out before we set the dogs on you' would be my reply.

Littlespaces · 08/03/2019 12:36

It is like the class clown blaming the teacher or the other hard working students for the fact things haven't turned out well.

1tisILeClerc · 08/03/2019 12:42

{Excellent. If it is up to the EU they can say the best outcome is to Revoke.}
It would be interesting looking at it more from an EU perspective if that is still the case.
Simply repatriating significant chunks of industry from the UK and tightening some screws here and there could get quite close to the UK's former contribution.
Why would the EU want to retain a country that is incapable of making it's mind up, is demonstrably 'influenced' by both Russia and the USA .

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2019 12:48

They'd still like us back
However they've rarely dared say so
and now Tusk & others have said they think the chance of Revoke is tiny anyway

Missbel · 08/03/2019 12:48

Littlespaces I'd read about the Select Committee report, but not actually seen it, thank you. It's extraordinary that it has been quietly buried - by the media as well as everyone except for the unsuccessful court case to stop Brexit, where Sir James Eades, the Treasury Council, explained that TM was well aware of the issues but thought they were immaterial. (I paraphrase) It shows how low politics has sunk that no-one is making a fuss about foreign interference on this scale.

DGRossetti · 08/03/2019 12:55

Theresa May is set to tell the EU it "has to make a choice" on Brexit

Er, they have. Was no one listening.

(Reminded of Basil Fawlty .... "Mad, deaf and blind ...." )

DGRossetti · 08/03/2019 13:00

Has there ever been a time quite like now, when those in charge have pointedly and publicly refused to own their own shit ? From government down, it seems the accepted narrative now is that no matter how big the fuck up, no matter who is harmed (or killed) - it's never anyones fault.

Illegal war ? Oh dear, never mind.
Managing to shoot dead an unarmed innocent civilian ? No ones fault.

Has it always been like this ? Surely this cannot be the country we all grew up in.

Is it such a stretch to think that if the people who run our country and make our laws are so venal and self serving that its' no wonder kids feel they need to take control of their own destinies with knives. Because they certainly can't trust the fuckers who are supposed to deliver the future to them ?

Sostenueto · 08/03/2019 13:02

TM been asked 3 times does she take responsibility for brexit mess? 3 times she says vote for deal. Hmm
