Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

The NATO Summit is due to be held in London in December.

What do you reckon to the odds of it going ahead as planned?

Will police force and security services be too stretched dealing with civil unrest following a No Deal Brexit? How will the public feel watching dignitaries being shepherded around London in motor cavalcades and eating lavish dinners while the plebs struggle to get sufficient supplies Hmm

PestyMachtubernahme · 07/02/2019 11:39

Elenade thought the same when I read it.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2019 11:40

Thanks, red 💐

DGRossetti · 07/02/2019 11:41

I have no worries for the EU after Brexit. They've proved themselves quite capable of looking after themselves (although it's arguable the UK hasn't really presented too much to bother them with.)

I bet China and the US have taken notes.

Hasenstein · 07/02/2019 11:48

Older women in Germany making their voices heard.

www.theguardian.com/world/shortcuts/2019/feb/07/grannies-against-brexit-its-time-for-older-women-to-take-to-the-streets

Plenty of former Greenham Common women here still with plenty of fire in their bellies. I fit the age group, if not the gender, but would be willing to disguise myself Grin. Even better if older men joined in too - a Wisdom of Age movement perhaps.

derxa · 07/02/2019 11:52

.

DGRossetti · 07/02/2019 12:01

You know something ? I think old men have done enough damage to the UK, one way and another Sad

Hasenstein · 07/02/2019 12:09

DGR

So where does that leave me - old and anti-Brexit? There have been plenty of posts on here about older people, including men, who have lived through rationing, IMF bailouts, the Troubles in NI and plenty of other fuck-ups over the past 50 years and are furious about this entire shitshow. Can't tar us all with the same brush.

DGRossetti · 07/02/2019 12:09

Brief interlude (I know it will be appreciated Grin)

So if I act weirder than usual someits up Grin

prettybird · 07/02/2019 12:11

So after "robust" discussions, May and Juncker agree that they'll kick the can further down the road to the end of February, without actually changing the backstop. Confused

In other unrelated news, the Bank of England downgrades its growth forecast for 2019 from an already relatively weak 1.9% to 1.2%.

DGRossetti · 07/02/2019 12:12

True, too true. But it leaves this one tired, depressed, angry, bitter, fearful and not much use to anyone right now.

Anyway, back on with the show, and "Finland, Finland !" Grin

DGRossetti · 07/02/2019 12:14

So after "robust" discussions, May and Juncker agree that they'll kick the can further down the road to the end of February, without actually changing the backstop.

I suspect it's more a case of:

May: Blah, blah, blahdy, blah. A blah blah blah blah
Juncker: Whatever.

because, realistically, what else can it be ?

PerverseConverse · 07/02/2019 12:20

So we are still at the nothing's changed point/impasse? Fantastic.

Hasenstein · 07/02/2019 12:34

But it leaves this one tired, depressed, angry, bitter, fearful and not much use to anyone right now

That in a nutshell is exactly how I feel. But that's not a gender thing, either. Just about everyone on this thread seems to be feeling the same (Destiel - hope you're feeling less tired today).

DGRossetti · 07/02/2019 12:34

So we are still at the nothing's changed point/impasse? Fantastic.

Depends who "we" is ? The UK ? Fuck knows. The EU - as restated yesterday the only game in town is the WA - please yourselves. Que sera, sera

mrslaughan · 07/02/2019 12:36

@SusanWalker - have you tried a weighted blanket for your DS - it was a life saver for my DS

DGRossetti · 07/02/2019 12:36

Right on cue ....

www.irishtimes.com/business/financial-services/ubs-gets-approval-to-shift-32bn-of-assets-from-britain-1.3785345

UBS has received approval from a London court to move up to €32 billion in assets from Britain to Germany as part of plans to keep business in the European Union after Brexit.

UBS, Switzerland’s biggest bank, received approval from Judge Alastair Norris to transfer operations from UBS Limited, its London-based subsidiary primarily handling investment banking activities, to Frankfurt-domiciled UBS Europe SE on March 1st.

(contd)

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2019 12:43

This may be what caused Tusk to express his exasperation in public ....

When he realised how completely clueless May and her govt are:

According to EU officials.
Tusk* was “gobsmacked”* last week after a phone call with May in which she asked him what the EU was going to do to get the WA through in the HoC
🤦🏻‍♀️🤯

She asked the EU to come forward with new ideas to get HoC approval for the WA
Trying to get my head around such cheeky fuckery and admission of total failure as a PM
SO embarassing.

PerverseConverse · 07/02/2019 12:46

That's some cheeky fuckery

ElenadeClermont · 07/02/2019 12:47

BCF Is this a wind-up? Surely she knows she is the PM of the UK, not Tusk.

dontcallmelen · 07/02/2019 12:49

PMK, nothing useful or insightful to say anyone else just fucking depressed?

downthestrada · 07/02/2019 12:51

She asked the EU to come forward with new ideas to get HoC approval for the WA

At a time when we’re supposedly all about taking back control, we are running to the E.U. and asking them to handle our shit because we are incompetent. It’s fucking embarrassing.

Wonder how leavers see this though? Is it still the big bad E.U. blocking us from making progress and not compromising.

Destiel · 07/02/2019 13:02

Sigh.
