Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

She asked the EU to come forward with new ideas to get HoC approval for the WA

If we've learned nothing else these past years, the astounding lack of intelligence of Brexiteers should be top of the list. Even before the referendum it was plainly obvious there was a hardcore nut cluster of people who somehow thought that Brexit was something the EU would have to give the UK. With stupidity of that level flying around, it should come as no surprise that there are still a sizeable number of people who still think that.

I would suspect that Theresa May doesn't believe that, but she's managed to get herself so tightly wedged to the machinery, she had to make that call (and more importantly have it reported she made that call) in order to deflect the advancing maw of the Leave-Behinders, as it's dawning (slowly, but that comes with the territory) that they really aren't going to see anything at all out of their beloved Brexit. When was the last time blue passports were mentioned ?

You summon the genie - you pay the price. boo fucking hoo.

Sorry link fail - was meant to be a wail of disbelief..

Hey I've had an idea for a solution. I got it from Brexiteer in chief my FIL ...

The EU could [ drum roll] 'take us over'.

Whatsnewwithyou · 07/02/2019 13:15

Ok, I'd be fine with that lonely if brexiteers
agree 😁.

jasjas1973 · 07/02/2019 13:18

Interesting and what i believe will happen to Lab if they go into "coalition" with the tories in regard to Brexit.

In light of the revelation that TM asked Tusk what he was going to do to get the WA through parliament his remarks yesterday seem extremely tame.

Yes he has a weighted blanket. He's just in a really bad place atm. We're waiting on a review with the psychiatrist but they're short staffed and it keeps getting pushed back. I'm hoping the home tutoring will be in place soon so he at least has something to do.

Yup if we are asking for ideas- let's trial a temporary takeover.

We could have Verhofstadt in charge with a joint committee of some people he picks plus say Hilary Benn, Dominic Grieve, Sarah Wollaston, Philip Lee, Yvette Cooper, David Lammy.

Then a rotating parliament that sits in the round initially based In a 'special place in Hull' ( see what I did there).

If enough pushed for an extreme solution, who knows there may be a compromise back to where we were in 2016 helping lead a powerful successful trading bloc.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 07/02/2019 13:27

Leaver friend is also in agreement this has not been a smooth process - she now says it is May not letting the ERG (well, Davis, Boris and Fox) do "things" that they wanted to do all along, which presumably would have worked Hmm. So we are in agreement for the first time in 2.5 years! Smile Cake
She's less effusive today but agrees with me (I know, twice in a day too!) that TM is likely to legislate for workers rights and environmental to let WA and her deal go back to HoC. She thinks this will be done last minute. She's said that if the economy goes down it would be good as she can then set her mortgage lower in March next year...but she's realised (too late!) that then her house needs to be worth more to pay for the remortgage and extension she did last year [facepalm emoji]. I think it's slowly dawning this may not have been in their best interests after all Hmm

LonelyandTiredandLow · 07/02/2019 13:31

It's odd because I feel myself fluctuating between "it's going to be No Deal" to, "we might just squeeze in her old plan plus bells and whistles for Labour" . I'm hedging my bets and not ruling out more incompetence I suspect Grin.

prettybird · 07/02/2019 13:32

Mother - I think that MN said that the app wasn't affected.

I've had to sign back in on the laptop but not on the app (on my iPhone).

BiglyBadgers · 07/02/2019 13:33

The EU could [ drum roll] 'take us over'.

Do you think writing a letter to the EU parliament asking if they would invade counts as treasonous? Asking for a friend...

prettybird · 07/02/2019 13:33

Lonelyplanetmum -liked what you did there Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2019 13:33

Maybe she also asked Juncker for ideas about getting her WA through....

Sam Coates Times@SamCoatesTimes

EU-U.K. statement post talks

  • “robust”
  • “teams will hold talks”
  • no “reopening” of Withdrawal Agreement
  • political declaration can be changed

This is a joint statement so RIP Malthouse?

< Changing PD was alawys acceptable to the EU, so e.g. OK to bring in some of Labour's ideas for the future relationship >

I'm going for perversity- if I get sucked into any more debates with Leavers I'm going to postulate in favour of a temporary trial takeover.

I think it's a curved ball and will lead to more satisfying discussions than explaining the advantages of the former status quo.

lonelyplanetmum · 07/02/2019 13:37

Bigly...

Or a petition?

" Ask the EU to take us over if parliament rejects the deal
Brexit is not worth it. A hard border in Ireland will destroy the Good Friday Agreement, meds are being stockpiled and there's news that a contract has been given to a company with no ferries, and the army is on standby in the event of no-deal too. Ask MPs to vote for an EU take over"

I'd sign.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/02/2019 13:37

Just an indication, but brexit lloking softer all the time ....

Steven Swinfordd@Steven*_Swinford

Interesting move by a member of Keir Starmer's team.

I'm told that this is definitely NOT the official Labour position.

Can you post the resulting conversations on here Lonelyplanetmum just so I can enjoy the sight of leavers going apoplectic. Wink

My password was showing as breached on haveibeenpwned, despite me staying logging in for months, so I would change it. I think the ap is designed so that you don’t need a password to log in?

lonelyplanetmum · 07/02/2019 13:43

I'm a bit scared to really do it Bigly but if I do I'll share.

Icantreachthepretzels · 07/02/2019 13:43

going back to this from a few pages ago about U.S trade deals and the NI/ROI border:

Yet the uS want us to retain open borders on the island of Ireland?

Isn't this oxymoronic or something?

Yes it is a complete catch twenty two. If we maintain a soft border (requiring a CU/ SM access) then we can't strike our own trade deals with the rest of the world - including the U.S
BUT - if we do away with the CU/SM - meaning we can have our own trade deals - but in doing so inevitably cause a hard border in Ireland, as a consequence, then the U.S will refuse to strike a trade deal with us.

It renders Brexit impossible and futile except crashing out still allows the disaster capitalists to have their pay day ... and that is the entire point of the brexit exercise.

When you keep firmly in mind that brexit is about rich men getting richer and nothing else - it really explains away a lot of the batshittery. As horrible as the destruction of the UK for the profit of a handful of people, who were already disgustingly rich, is - I actually find it quite soothing to know. It saves a lot of stress and brain space trying to work out why everyone is being so hopeless and why they don't just do some of the perfectly reasonable suggestions that have been offered to either stop or at least mitigate the worst of it. Because preventing disaster prevents the rich men from getting paid. And the rich men are going to get paid no matter what - they have put a lot of money and energy into making sure it happens.
