I'm sure she's far from perfect like the rest of us, but I can't see the connection:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-politics-46785941/brexit-anna-soubry-mp-shouted-down-by-protesters-on-tv

The earlier chant, though, was spot on:

"Soubry is a lawyer....."

(If I heard rightly?)

But those police are more likely to be anti-terrorist. They won’t be allowed to leave their post

Exactly

jasjas1973 · 08/01/2019 10:53

I think she shows major arrogance going against what her constituents decided

It was Churchill who first said an MPs first duty is to the country!
As she voted to trigger Art50, she cannot be accused of going against her Leave constituents, she wants a PV, of which there is a majority in the country for.
Of course they have the chance to get rid of her at the next GE.....

QuentinWinters · 08/01/2019 10:55

She needs police protection now because of the vitriol against her. I think she shows major arrogance going against what her constituents decided but she shouldn't be hassled or threatened over it. That is not on.
MPs are representatives, not proxies. They are elected to do what they feel is best on behalf of their constituents. If constituents are unhappy, they can remove them at the next GE. Soubry didn't lose her seat so her constituents can't be that unhappy.

The idea MPs have to have the same brexit opinion as their constituents is a nonsense.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 08/01/2019 10:55

Agree with you completely there jas

SillySallySingsSongs · 08/01/2019 10:55

Of course they have the chance to get rid of her at the next GE

She is on a very very slim majority. If feelings are so strong in her constituency then she may be deselected anyway.

Mistigri · 08/01/2019 10:56

I genuinely think the police resource issue is irrelevant here. For sure there aren't enough police, but if the police aren't prioritising keeping our elected representatives safe in front of the seat of British democracy, (where there is already a permanent police presence) then the issue is priorities not resources.

In this case, the choice not to intervene seems to have been a political one - the ring leader basically wants to get arrested so he can turn himself into an alt right martyr like Tommeh (because it's a lucrative career move for someone with a big mouth and no skills or work ethic), and so the police have chosen a softly softly approach.

BlackCatSleeping · 08/01/2019 10:57

jasjas, you are actually quoting two different posters there.

This was a low-level crime though. The concern is that they need more policing to prevent a more serious crime being commmited. I’m sure many people over the UK would like more police on the beat to prevent serious crimes being committed but there aren’t the resources. No one is saying that the police don’t investigate serious crimes, but the police will themselves admit that they are strapped for resources to prevent crimes from happening. Does that make sense? It’s a different thing.

She invites vitriol yet can't take it coming back at her.

Thus, she has no right to be an MP with its taxpayer funded salary and perks.

jasjas1973 · 08/01/2019 11:03

@WallisFrizz

Apologise, i need more coffee Blush

lonelyplanetmum · 08/01/2019 11:03

I think she shows major arrogance going against what her constituents decided

Zac Goldsmith represents one of the highest Remain voting constituencies- yet he is an ardent Leave supporter, ignoring the vast majority of his constituents. He submitted one of the critical letters to support the ERGs failed coup. So he shows major arrogance in going against what his constituents decided. Yet he can pass around Westminster without harassment.

Many others are as vocal as Soubry - yet she is singled out- male MPs simply do not receive the same treatment.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 08/01/2019 11:03

She invites viterol?

How does one do that? Do you have to do it formally with embossed invites?

BlackCatSleeping · 08/01/2019 11:05

I just want to be clear though. I think the police should act and what these men did to her was very wrong.

It was just the letter and the attitude of her feeling that she deserves special protection that is denied other women in the UK that I find distasteful. Every woman should be allowed to walk to work or wherever she wants without being harassed.

Hoppinggreen · 08/01/2019 11:05

I loathe Corbyn but I would condem anyone surrounding him in a mob and shouting abuse at him.
It doesn’t matter what side of the political spectrum they are on it’s threatening behaviour and the police should act

Mistigri · 08/01/2019 11:05

A number of prominent leavers represent remain constituencies. It wouldn't be OK to call them nazis or intimidate them, either.

Bombardier25966 · 08/01/2019 11:06

@jasjas1973 have you actually read the article you're relying on? It disproves your assertion!

"The number of police officers in England and Wales has fallen by over 20,000 between March 2010 and March 2018."

"there are 16% fewer ‘frontline’ officers since 2010."

Wow, with comments like that I fear for our democracy. Soubry should defend her position and follow her conscience.

Is there a correlation between police numbers and crime?

We've 20,000 fewer Police, so 120k instead of 140k, we could double police numbers but do you really think it would stop serious crime?

@Henrietta55 she and many other female MP's are being threatened with rape and murder, this is a little beyond the normal cut and thrust of politics!
Being physically abused could lead to her being killed or injured and the Police should uphold the law.

surferjet · 08/01/2019 11:17

Where has it been reported that the ‘ringleader’ is an out of work big mouthed far right supporter? With the support of the police?

Soubry should actually be fired from the Tory Party

For what?
