Westministenders: Talks Walk Out?

We are now on the countdown to whether we get a backstop Withdrawal Deal. May is hoping to get the EU to backdown on this saying that we will stay in the customs union until a deal is agreed on NI. That would mean come 29th March, we'd have no transistion period, but we'd still have a hard border in NI because we were out of the single market. And if the EU don't agree to it we are into the chances of accidental Brexit being sky high. The only way out would be revoking a50. May has hinted that if Tory MPs don't give her support we could end up with no brexit at all - whether she means revoking a50 or Beano isn't clear.

So onward to 18th October...

I await with interest to see what a Tory Remain group will do. So far, there has been much talk, but then they cave in and dutifully troop through the Government lobby.

Hazardswan · 10/10/2018 22:54

Rumoured 30? Sure there was an independent article a few wks back saying a rumoured 40 Tories would vote against May... perhaps 30 are hard-core remainers and 10 just want democracy!

@faisalislam
Road Haulage Association at Brexit committee today confirm my story from March - a number of organisations obliged to sign non disclosure agreements before discussions re: Brexit border with Government -not impressed with what they have been told, but blocked from talking details

Stephen Lennon pimps army dilemma.

That is the question the army's investigation must answer: were the soldiers, crowded around Tommy Robinson and chanting his name, "exhibiting extremist views". That is subjective and hard to prove

One poor squadide's been fired, and onwards march the nazi soldiers.

Civil Contingencies Powers for an army like this looks more dangerous by the day.

Revealed: sick, tortured immigrants locked up for months in Britain

Children were held in adult detention centres, while 30% of detainees had dependent children in the UK

More than half were defined as an adult at risk due to being victims of torture, having suicidal thoughts or being unwell

While the government claims detainees are held briefly before being deported, 84% had not been given removal directions

Detention ranged from under five days to nearly three years, with a median of four months, despite Home Office guidance that it should be used sparingly and for the shortest period necessary

Detainees came from 56 countries, most commonly Nigeria and Algeria

@faisalislam
no doubt in my mind from multiple sources that important industrial and logistics providers feel gagged by these NDAs in telling the public the reality/ correcting erroneous optimistic political claims re Brexit border preparedness.

Cant think of a precedent.

gagged

God this is so depressing. Can we just have some pictures of kittens or something?

KennDodd · 10/10/2018 23:14

Any chance at all the DUP might just come out and say big Brexit? I know I'm really clutching at straws considering they all voted Leave.

KennDodd · 10/10/2018 23:15

BIN BREXIT! Not big Brexit.

ken You could chill with my AIBU thread - it's about choosing your emotional support animal for a flight:

https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/3390983-to-ask-what-emotional-support-animal-you-would-choose-to-bring-on-a-plane-if-allowed

bellinisurge · 11/10/2018 06:15

@BigChocFrenzy Are dinosaurs allowed in tribute to the extremely helpful approach of those creationist loons the DUP?

BigChocFrenzy · 11/10/2018 07:22

@bellinisurge My Noah's ark of a plane is cousin to the Tardis, including waste disposal

I originally suggested nothing that would eat anyone else's support animal - or passengers - but then along came a couple of crocodiles ....

So anything goes / flies now !

bellinisurge · 11/10/2018 07:26

My dinosaur will be so friendly and easy to have. It'll be a breeze. Soon everyone will want one. It'll be the best support dinosaur ever.

woman11017 · 11/10/2018 07:53

Stephen Lennon is at it with the police too.

@J_amesp
Genuine question for you @PoliceInspForum
Should anonymous police accounts be professing views even vaguely supportive of Tommy Robinson?
And where does the accountability sit in such anonymous cases?
And how is this acceptable given the priority of right-wing in Prevent?

@PoliceInspForum
Is he someone police officers / staff should support / associate with, absolutely not. We have seen the outcome of those so called protests, where disorder and injuries occur. I find it very odd that some politicians are trying to mainstream him. He’s a convicted criminal

Odd

I was just reading about the start of WW1 and how all the countries blundered into it. So much like today's politicians.

woman11017 · 11/10/2018 08:26

It's frightening how history appears to be repeating itself
Not just the wars; also the 20 century's attacks and battles over human rights.

1890s was a time of feminism, internationalism, technologies which helped people communicate globally, trades union successes, liberalism. From Russia to US to britain. Hmm

Then the pogroms started.

Peregrina · 11/10/2018 08:32

It's very much the same, and no one believed that these sorts of things could happen. Germany e.g. was one of the most cultured and educated countries in Europe.

I have old photos still of grandparents as children and teenagers (not called that then) before the war - showing idyllic conditions. They weren't poor, but they certainly weren't wealthy.

I think there is some posh do on this morning.
BBC business news with BMW saying they are putting £3 Billion into Chinese manufacturing in the next few years. Manufacture of electric minis being one. Part of the deal can't happen until 2022 but they will start ramping up in 2020. Announcement made yesterday, a coincidence?

lonelyplanetmum · 12/10/2018 09:02

Yes many companies are leaving or reducing.

If only the people had understood this.. "There is no "they". We ARE the EU. We co-write the laws, and anything we don't like we can either veto or opt-out of. In fact, we have opted out of more EU laws than any other member state. Here is a graph showing our opt-outs compared to other members"
