Westministenders: Talks Walk Out?

We are now on the countdown to whether we get a backstop Withdrawal Deal. May is hoping to get the EU to backdown on this saying that we will stay in the customs union until a deal is agreed on NI. That would mean come 29th March, we'd have no transistion period, but we'd still have a hard border in NI because we were out of the single market. And if the EU don't agree to it we are into the chances of accidental Brexit being sky high. The only way out would be revoking a50. May has hinted that if Tory MPs don't give her support we could end up with no brexit at all - whether she means revoking a50 or Beano isn't clear.

So onward to 18th October...

Car sales tumble by 20% in September

It is really a festival of good news.
I just don't understand how any ideology could be worth the destruction of our economy. Surely that is what fanatics believe!
Worrying about the economic downturn caused by brexit and the impact on jobs is only pragmatic.

Thanks Motheroffdragons, guess it's just a case of wait and see which is ridiculous after all this time.

Quietrebel · 04/10/2018 09:34

I'm increasingly convinced it'll be a choice between no deal at all with the EU or remain (assuming that is still possible). There's no in between. No fudge. It'll be all in or all out.

Thanks for the new thread and get well soon, RTB . Honey really is excellent for colds.

I have not slept through a night in weeks now. Waking up panicking. Sad

Car sales tumble by 20% in September

A couple of weeks ago I went into a car dealership to ask about a second hand car I'd seen on their website ... they told me the car was there, but what would I say to a brand new car for the same price? Reader, I said 'yes'.

They didn't literally give it away - but they couldn't offload this brand new car quick enough.

Peregrina · 04/10/2018 10:49

We've just changed our car - didn't do as well as getting a new one for the price we would have paid for a second hand, but quite satisfied with what we paid. The salesman said the same - new car sales a bit flat. I had had an email from the garage back in August, "hurry, new car sale, when they are gone, they are gone." Next email was "new car sale extended". Third one, which came yesterday "Halloween special sale on new cars".

Good Morning Britain @GMB
#Brexit warning: Japanese car manufacturer Nissan says a 'No Deal' Brexit would cause 'serious disruption' to its UK operations. 38,000 British jobs are supported by the car builder.

"This, from Nissan chief exec Carlos Ghosn "We are preparing for the worst but I do not want to tell you how we are preparing because you will say I am just trying to scare people."

Peregrina · 04/10/2018 10:54

Seems as though May's bribe to Nissan, whatever it was, wasn't enough.

DGRossetti · 04/10/2018 10:54

Posted on the specific thread, but worth leaving here.

From Thomas Cook.

I wonder if they are in the secret "sue the UK" queue ?

@woman
As I have just commented on another thread, the Japanese business mentality is different to the west, they work on as near certainty as possible.
Business leaders across Europe are probably falling over themselves to offer manufacturing 'opportunities'.
As Robotic assembly improves (is more versatile) it is de skilling many jobs but require humans to do various operations, but training may be less arduous than in former times. With the new train lines that have been built, goods can be loaded up anywhere in mainland Europe and go straight to Beijing. (Grayling is not involved!).

{MHRA consultation on EU exit no-deal legislative proposals

This consultation seeks your views on how the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s (MHRA) legislation and regulatory processes would have to be modified in the event of the UK not securing a deal with the EU after the UK’s exit, with no Implementation Period. This consultation covers no-deal proposals on medicines, clinical trials and medical devices. }

Tech document just popped into my inbox.
Forgive me for thinking the Gov should already have plans and not be 'seeking views' at this stage?

Thanks for the new thread Red and get well soon!

I wonder what measures are in place to reduce the risk of UK workers sabotaging production?
Someone drilled a hole in the international space station (a dangerous tactic if you ask me) so the prospect on things like car production must be real.

I have tried battling with my friend's Mum who is very active attempting to keep the Leaver's buoyant on Facebook. If I ever refer to any facts and figures, like the government's own negative projections, she just says oh so wisely...
" It's not all about money [LPM's first name]."

TheElementsSong · 04/10/2018 11:29

I just don't understand how any ideology could be worth the destruction of our economy.

People since time immemorial have been willing to torture, main, kill and die for religion/ideology. When you look at it that way, Leavers are pretty mild on the fanatic spectrum Grin.

I read this article and initially misread Davos for Davros! I would be really bad if even Davros didn't even want to tell you how bad it is.

Nissan becomes latest manufacturer to warn against hard Brexit

Stop dancing and start listening to what industry are telling you:

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/oct/04/nissan-becomes-latest-manufacturer-to-warn-against-hard-brexit

[today] The Japanese carmaker Nissan has warned the government that serious disruption will be caused to its huge manufacturing operation in the north-east of England if the UK fails to secure a deal with the EU that avoids a hard Brexit.
< that's no just no deal, it's any kind of hard Brexit >

Carlos Ghosn, the chair of Nissan, has described its British operations as “a European investment based in the UK”,
which employs almost 8,000 people, mostly at its factory near Sunderland. A further 30,000 people are employed in UK companies supplying Nissan.
...
Colin Lawther, a Nissan executive, told the House of Commons international trade committee in February 2017 that tariffs would add £500m to the plant’s costs, which it might not survive, and that long delays of parts at borders would be a disaster for the operation.
...
In a statement to the Guardian authorised by the main board in Japan, Nissan said:
...
"Today we are among those companies with major investments in the UK who are still waiting for clarity on what the future trading relationship between the UK and the EU will look like.
As a sudden change from those rules to the rules of the World Trading Organization will have serious implications for British industry,
we urge UK and EU negotiators to work collaboratively towards an orderly balanced Brexit that will continue to encourage mutually beneficial trade.”
...
Senior executives at Toyota, BMW and the PSA Group, which owns Vauxhall, have all warned this week that they are likely to reduce their operations in the UK in the event of a hard Brexit.

In September Ralf Speth, chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover, warned the prime minister that its operations faced grinding to a halt
and that “tens of thousands” of jobs in the industry could be lost.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/10/2018 11:40

This is from 2017, but afaik the situation has remained basically the same:

PSA Group factories across Europe are currently running at such low capacity they could easily swallow up the output of the Vauxhall plants in the UK – and still have room to spare

France warned on Wednesday that it would prefer Britain to crash out of Europe without a deal rather than accept a compromise that undermined the integrity of the European Union

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/10/03/no-deal-brexit-better-bad-deal-us-says-macron-minister/

The stark warning from Nathalie Loiseau, the country’s Europe minister, came as both sides prepared for a crucial fortnight of negotiation following the close of the Conservative party conference.

“No deal would be better than a bad deal,
< Hmm deliberate choice of phrase there ! sounds more convincing from France somehow >

Ms Loiseau told a French radio station, turning familiar Brexiteers’ own mantra back on the UK,
before warning that “time is running out” for Theresa May to strike a deal with Brussels.
