After disaster after Salzberg and a very predictable humilation over the Chequers Deal which the ERG reject, moderate Brexiteers reject, Remainers reject and the EU reject....

May does a press conference...

...which is delayed by a power shortage inside No. 10.

And....

Thanks as always for the new thread RTB

DGRossetti · 21/09/2018 16:19

Didn't Barnier already provide them with an explanation in the form of this infographic?

But that doesn't have cake on it.

I'm really starting to suffer psychic exhaustion of exchanges with Brexiteers who fail to grasp that the reason we still haven't walked away is because - despite their credo of the EU needing the UK etc etc - they still haven't twigged that it's the UK that needs something. It's not the EU "forcing" us to stay. It's the UK choosing to stay in the hope of cake and eat it.

Even after the hardest of Brexits, they will go to their grave convinced it was the EU - rather than their own corrupt (but "un foreign") politicians that did this.

I so wish I could find that escalator clip from Ben Elton circa 1990. It's a perfect example of self delusion.

I wonder if there's scope - especially with todays tech - for a more modern Salazar solution for May ? Just drive her between hotels and conferences festooned with union Jacks, and feed her fake news about how well the UK is doing post Brexit, while the grown ups take over again ?

Every comment from May is an attempt to demonstrate it will be the EUs fault that we don't have a deal and the red tops are all feeding the masses with the same message.

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2018 16:27

Nick Gutteridge @nick_gutteridge
Stating the obvious but after morning of speaking to sources on EU side one thing has become very clear - Brits blew yesterday big time. From May's dinner speech to Fox on food standards & Orban overtures, every single thing they did annoyed & alarmed EU leaders in equal measure.

And this afternoon will definitely have helped...

Nick Cohen @nickcohen4
It will never stop. When you die and go to hell Satan and all his demons will be arguing about Brexit. For eternity.

I have this thing about how horrible it would have been to die of natural causes in WWII.

From the point of view of never knowing how it ended.

I feel the same about Brexit and Trump.

I want there to be an end, rather than this pergatory.

Which is why I'm struggling atm with it.

Are there any grown-ups?

I think they checked out when they realised the batshit lunacy Sad.

by the way, cool username ... I felt I should be able grasp it, as I know (for reasons that needn't be discussed here) that "brujo" was Mexican for "shaman" Hmm, so "bruja" should be "witch". So I was (probably over) chuffed with myself to see "BrujaPiruja" seems to be a cartoon witch character Smile.

My cousin would be proud !

BigChocFrenzy · 21/09/2018 16:39

Thanks, red Thanks

These threads are like an invitation to a live autopsy, our own or the country's - scary but fascinating

For anyone who wants to relive May's speech 🤬 :

"I screwed the pooch"

Hazardswan · 21/09/2018 16:39

Great news....I found a mixer, it's a can of pop and I took a slug and poured brandy right into the can which is a top tip for anyone who wants to drink around loved ones who are medically not allowed to get stressed and drink or y'know children.

Are there any grown ups?

Errmmm.... I used to be one but a) not a politician and b) I've now taken the afternoon off.

Sarahlou63 · 21/09/2018 16:43

Nanny May is very, very cross. All you bad, horrid EU boys must sit on the naughty step until you come up with the right answer to the question she asked two years ago.

Because she hasn't got a fucking clue.

DarlingNikita · 21/09/2018 16:44

Place mat king.

Fucking hell.

LaBrujaPiruja · 21/09/2018 16:47

DGR the cartoon is quite 'modern', la Bruja Piruja is the main character in a few ancestral stories to scare children, hahaha.
And this is something a find quite funny, as these stories were usually told by prim and proper old ladies... I doubt they knew the meaning of the adjective piruja

pirujo, ja
1. adj. El Salv. Que no cumple con sus deberes religiosos.
2. f. Mujer joven, libre y desenvuelta.
3. f. despect. Méx. prostituta.

So... non-religious, frisky, slut...

BigChocFrenzy · 21/09/2018 16:47

The only good part of Theresa May’s speech was also the scariest

Yes, I thought it a very odd time to suddenly guarantee the rights of the three million E27 expats in the UK.

If she wanted to give that away freely - which is morally right, of course - that should have been at the start of the negotiations, to avoid the EU feeling disgust and resentment over that issue

Conceding that now sounds like the preliminary to no deal because:

  • the UK needs those workers
  • the Home Office has no system to process / expel 3 million people

After today, Johnson starts to really look an attractive prospect as PM.

I definitely need to crack open the gin.

So the BBC is trying to convince us that the European press is behind us and think the EU has been really too harsh.
Despite all the titles basically saying T. Has screwed everything up.

As for the power cut. Can anyone even believe that Downing Street doesn’t have emergency power supply???
Nope I’m wondeirng what made her delay a speech that shouod have have left the paper it was written on.

ShinyElena · 21/09/2018 16:51

When do you think the famous survival instinct of the Tory party will kick in? I mean now would be a good time.
Surely they must know that the Tories will be wiped out for a generation after no-deal. Is there no one left with any common sense?
DH still hopes Salzburg was part of some sort of a cunning plan, but it is getting desperate.

HermioneGoesBackHome · 21/09/2018 16:51

Yes, I thought it a very odd time to suddenly guarantee the rights of the three million E27 expats in the UK.

The rights of the EU citizens are already guaranteed though. The law passed through Parliament in July. There is no relation between that law and deal or no deal.
Of course, the law can then be changed. Through parliamentary vote.

But I’d rather take a law as a sign that I have some chances to be treated well in the UK and a word from TM.

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2018 16:52

Laura Kuenssberg @ bbclaurak
Clarification - it's apparently an issue with the tv feed, not a power problem

Sounds feasible.

But slightly less funny.

O'reilly Hmm Is this in English and as well "researched" as their "What the Germans are saying" powerpoint of a few days ago ?

nomad5 · 21/09/2018 16:57

Gin o clock is right

I yelled JESUS FUCKING CHRIST DON'T YOU FUCKING GET IT at Theresa May prattling nonsense

I half thought for a moment she might have planned to call Brexit off after the shambles of yesterday

Sincerely, a UK citizen in Europe

pumkinspicetime · 21/09/2018 16:58

shiny as an ex Conservative party member my DH has on several occasions tried to point this out to our leave crazy MP, he isn't listening. He does reply, which is a courtesy as we are now overseas voters but he tells us that he only hears from regretful remainers who just want Brexit sorted and there is no will for either another vote or too remain or to have a softer Brexit.

1tisILeClerc · 21/09/2018 16:58

If it is BoJo or May, the .. non-religious, frisky, slut...
How do you choose?
