Think it was the Rosamund Pilcher stuff that brings the Germans ?

surferjet · 17/09/2018 07:47

golondrina
You need to go on a few more courses if you think Spain can survive without the UK.
We are their number 1 in terms of visitors.
Unless you know something the entire internet doesn’t know ?

If you think the tourist industry in Spain or anywhere else in Europe has been ignoring the total farce that is Brexit and have not made alternative plans then you really are deluded. You think that next season the hotel and bar managers will sit in their offices with their heads in hands crying because no Brits turn up?
The UK government are being complete idiots, business owners are not, on the whole.
Someone on the travel thread was saying they had booked a flight and holiday for next spring. When on the 'seat allocation' page there were only 4 seats booked on the plane that by this stage would normally be pretty full. European tourist operators can read the crap that is coming from the UK and will regard the possible no flying or just disruption as time to concentrate on an alternative market, China, Russia.

golondrina · 17/09/2018 08:46

surferjet I know that you are talking out of your arse.

bellinisurge · 17/09/2018 08:46

Ah yes, they need us more than we need them. The Brexiteer answer to everything. LMFAO.

jasjas1973 · 17/09/2018 08:48

Brexitier woman on BBC Breakfast TV says we'll be better off long term out of the EU, as we couldnt be any worse off (eh?) and that we ve high crime in the UK FFS..... oh and her son says we are the envy of the world and we ll be more positive once out and can grow our own food if we have too!!!!! we are Great Britain!

....and remainers are accused of saying leavers are thick.... little wonder.

Bearbehind · 17/09/2018 09:14

It will never cease to amaze me the shite Leavers come out with.

I'm truly gobsmacked that surfer genuinely thinks Spans ability to survive is entirely down to UK tourists.

It's horrifying.

frumpety · 17/09/2018 09:23

Leclerc has hit the nail on the head, ever since the ref , other countries in the EU have been making contingency plans. The UK has been wandering around insulting people and sabre rattling at those it says it hopes to have FTA's with in the future. Must have missed that as a key tactic in the negotiation for dummies book Smile

frumpety · 17/09/2018 09:25

Sensible, pragmatic, realistic and diplomatic. Key negotiating elements.

Peregrina · 17/09/2018 09:25

We haven't been self sufficient in food for something like 150 years now, so why with a much bigger population than we had in the mid 19th century does anyone think we will be able to feed ourselves now?

jasjas1973 · 17/09/2018 09:28

Its the level of debate from Frum, Bear Leclerc etc etc reasoned and argued... as opposed to "we won...suck it up.....snowflake....be positive....."

In two years ive only heard one genuine argument for leaving, thats to do with tenders within the UK, having to follow EU rules, which can favour larger companies.

PCPlumsTruncheon · 17/09/2018 09:30

jasjas I’ve been watching that too. Apparently, that bloke and the Remain voting pensioner had a disagreement during the break when she pointed out how much of our food is imported. He put his arm around her and told her that his wife has just grown some lovely tomatoes.
His reasons for supporting Leave were basically that we’re too negative as a country and that leaving will give us pride in our country again and we’re the envy of the world.

jasjas1973 · 17/09/2018 09:37

PCPlums Very condescending of him! but so long as he can get his toms from his garden and bananas from Jamaica, who have of course a FTA with EU....but not us post March '19, all is good!

One of the next news items was cuts in FE colleges to 2020 at least.... so much for training up our own youngsters!!! on top of FE for adults, halved in last 8 years....all the EUs fault no doubt Shock

frumpety · 17/09/2018 09:39

Then you have Boris with his 'Fuck business' stance. And Raab with his don't blame Brexit instruction to businesses, whilst -simultaneously asking them to stockpile-

surferjet · 17/09/2018 09:42

If every single UK person stopped going to Spain & spending MILLIONS yes, they would suffer. They wouldn’t go completely under but their loss would be significant.
How you can argue that god only knows but you’re trying.
Perhaps you’d like to prove ( through graphs, tables, and whatever other data you care to use ) that we’re not Spain’s biggest customers?
Go ahead.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 17/09/2018 09:45

As I have repeatedly pointed out, no one is saying Spain wouldn't rather retain UK tourists but you continue to insist their country simply can't survive without them.

Utterly deluded.

surferjet · 17/09/2018 09:48

So Spain can skip along quite nicely without us - their biggest earners tourism wise - but we’ll go under within a week post brexit.

Gotcha.

OP posts:
Buteo · 17/09/2018 09:49

Just looked up spending figures for Spanish tourism in 2017.

Brit’s spending accounted for 18% of Spain’s tourism income. Brits spend less per head than Germans, Scandinavians and RoW excluding France and Italy. In fact, the level of British spending dropped 10% in 2017 (France and Italy also cut spending) whilst Germany, Nordic and RoW countries increased theirs.

I know where I’d be looking to attract visitors from.

Bearbehind · 17/09/2018 09:51

Noone has said 'we will go under'

That's where Leavers are a bit thick really- everything has to be so extreme

Life will be very difficult, certainly without a deal, and it's all for nothing.

frumpety · 17/09/2018 09:52

Surfer I think what people are trying to put across is that Spanish tourism businesses will have been making contingency plans to ensure that their suffering is mitigated. Or are you suggesting they are all sitting there with their fingers crossed ?

Peregrina · 17/09/2018 09:53

No one is saying that we don't provide Spain with its greatest proportion of tourists. 20% is a figure which has already been quoted. But that is now. What happens if there is no deal, the £ falls making holidays more expensive and each family member has to get a visa? It might soon not be? Plenty of Germans and E Europeans, Russians and Chinese to take up the slack.

golondrina · 17/09/2018 09:53

For some time, Spain has been reorientating its tourism towards higher paying visitors, precisely because Brits often come in large numbers but actually spend much less in country than other visitors. There's been a push in recent years towards richer visitors (both Brits and other nationalities) who will buy more luxurious tourim and create larger in-country spends.
Wealthier Britons will still go to Spain anyway.

golondrina · 17/09/2018 09:55

surfer doesn't actually know any of this, which I why I stand by my assertion that he/she is talking out of their arse.

surferjet · 17/09/2018 09:56

So we’ll all be fine after brexit. A bit difficult but not the end of the world.
No one will go under & we must stop being so extreme.

Well said bear.
