Only 1 rule.
No c&p posts a mile long, they’re just boring & no one reads them.
Keep it short, sweet, & to the point.

Oh, and 45% of the tourism’s contribution to Spain’s GDP came from domestic tourist spending.

Bearbehind · 17/09/2018 09:59

No surfer, we are putting ourselves through all this difficulty for absolutely no reason

That's the problem.

There will be no upside.

Only a reduction in what we currently have.

Why would any country choose to do that?

surferjet · 17/09/2018 09:59

Hold the front page....
People spend money in their own country shocker! 😱

OP posts:
AnnieKenney · 17/09/2018 10:00

Surferjet - have you seen the Spanish tourism strategy? For several years now they have been investing in higher spending tourists (Chinese, Russians and Argentiniansare tbe biggest spenders) and trying to reduce low-cost tourism (that would be tbe British in particular) as some Spanish destinations (especially Barcelona) cant cope with the numbers.

Of course the sudden loss of British tourists will hurt but not nearly as much as you seem to think - it just brings their plans forward a bit.

Bearbehind · 17/09/2018 10:01

surfer stop digging love.

You've been insisting Spain simply can't continue without UK tourists and, now you've hopefully realised how foolish that is, you are just making yourself look a bit silly really.

surferjet · 17/09/2018 10:05

No bear. I’ve said that we’re Spain’s biggest customers tourism wise, someone has even posted information confirming that.

Why you keep insisting I’m wrong I just don’t know. Just accept what I’m saying is true & move on.
Or prove me wrong.
Show me a graph that shows we’re not Spain’s number 1 tourists.

OP posts:
surferjet · 17/09/2018 10:06

Because the only person who’s looking a bit silly here is you.
But I should be used to you arguing black is white.

@surferjet - so why should Spain be destroyed by UK leaving the EU?Yes we are a big part of the tourism market for Spain but are they unable to reset? Same as we have to reset a lot of our markets post Brexit.

Bearbehind · 17/09/2018 10:13

sirfer, seriously you are bonkers.

You said

If it wasn’t for the UK Spain would disappear, so I doubt they’ll give us any grief.

And

You need to go on a few more courses if you think Spain can survive without the UK.

Unless you can prove how either of those 2 comments is true, there's only 1 fool around here.

No one has denied that the UK accounts for the highest proportion of Spain's tourism, but it's still only about 20% It is not going to destroy their tourism industry and certainly not their country, if that changes.

Buteo · 17/09/2018 10:17

Surfer you swinging wildly between Spain won’t cope without the Brits to ooh look,Spain has a significant domestic tourist industry.

UK spending accounts for less than 10% (and falling) of the GDP generated by Spain’s tourism industry.

surferjet · 17/09/2018 10:20

There you are again bear, tying yourself up in knots.
You’ve just said Spain will survive a massive hit. Great!
So why won’t the UK?
Why are other countries able to ride out storms and be ok but we’re doomed?
Your arguments are ridiculous. 😂

surferjet · 17/09/2018 10:26

And fwiw, if any Spanish people are lurking, I think the Spanish are the absolute best at providing holidays for the British, they’ve been doing it for over 50 years and are brilliant at it. I love Spain & have been many times. Shame some remainers on this thread think Spain can’t wait for us to stop going.

While not about tourism, the German equivalent of the CBI stated to German industry around a year ago if not more that they have to prepare for No Deal Brexit and to ensure that they can 'second source' all components OUTSIDE the UK wherever possible. There is a handy checklist (even in English) telling German companies what preparations they should be making, about an 8 page 'tick list'.
Anything less than a 'no deal' will be a bonus.

Bearbehind · 17/09/2018 10:35

surfer imove on from the fact you've totally ignored my request for how less UK tourists will completely destroy Spain

you really don't understand the intricacies of this do you?

The UK are putting pretty much our entire econmy on the line due to Brexit.

Yes German car manufacturers might prefer we didn't leave, same applies to Spanish tourist industry.

But the fact is they can diversify. We are one element of their income and they still have 27 countries to spread the pain across.

We are screwing everything, with nowhere to go with it.

For example, We have a huge automotive industry here yet we may not be able to sell those vehicles in the EU at all.

That's not a case of being unable to trade with 1 country, it's 27.

bellinisurge · 17/09/2018 10:38

@surferjet - tourism is one industry- naturally with other linked economic benefits- but Brexit affects EVERYTHING. Spain can sell its lovely weather, scenery, historic artefacts and buildings, food etc to anyone who can afford it. Including people from Eastern Europe including Russia and the Far East. If there ain't no money in the UK, they can easily sell to others. Including people in the EU who don't need any visas etc.

1tisILeClerc · 17/09/2018 10:38

@Surfer
The Spanish tourist trade may suffer a bit, but they can turn to other countries to fill any gaps very easily.
The UK is going about hacking the limbs off the body, starting with feet, ankles, knees and creeping upwards in EVERY aspect of life. The £350 Million 'promised' on the bus has been spent many times over and we haven't even left yet. The UK possibly can't export much farm produce as it will need to consume all of it, and still import possibly 30 percent. The car industries are not UK owned but consortiums with headquarters elsewhere. The UK DOES make stuff, but the tariff rules on WTO basis will hammer the prices by I believe around 10 percent, at which point it may be getting viable to locate elsewhere. Other EU countries offer start up grants and assistance with new buildings etc.

Buteo · 17/09/2018 10:41

You’ve just said Spain will survive a massive hit. Great!
So why won’t the UK?

It probably won’t be ‘a massive hit’, Brits will still travel to Spain, but not the more price conscious / low spending ones who are not Spain’s future target market.

So why won’t the UK?

Because Spain is not severing all its economic ties to the world with no fucking plan.

1tisILeClerc · 17/09/2018 10:47

The likes of BMW have factories all around the world and I believe they specialise in certain places. The mini line is in Cowley. It will be a royal PITA to shift that plant to somewhere in Europe but if the numbers don't look good, they will do it because they are businessmen not politicians.
I suspect that a 'deal' may have been made to retain the Mini (and similar elsewhere) until that model gets to the end of it's lifer cycle.
Although a different manufacturer, VW has announced the end of the line for the Beetle next year. What are they going to build in those factories next?

bellinisurge · 17/09/2018 10:52

Our tourism industry and farming took a massive hit with the foot and mouth outbreak. And we recovered relatively quickly. Brexit will make foot and mouth difficulties look like a bit of bad weather for a couple of weeks by comparison. Everything will be hammered at the same time.
It's sickening that BeLeavers prefer no deal to a half arsed deal. Or to ... giving the idea up as a bad job and staying in the EU.
It would be easier to fob off a bunch of angry Brexiteers - or ignore them - than to deliver Brexit.

jasjas1973 · 17/09/2018 13:11

We should all be so concerned about UK manufacturing, Jaguar to go on a 3 day week, blames brexit... again, well done Surfer!

Now Trump... "If countries will not make fair deals with us, they will be “Tariffed!” " sounds promising :(

Short term pain an all that guff eh.

1tisILeClerc · 17/09/2018 13:17

IMF reporting that any form of Brexit will be expensive and pretty unlikely that the UK will be as well off as before.
The Chancellor saying there will be cuts, lots of them when you look at the different ways he was expressing them.

1tisILeClerc · 17/09/2018 13:33

@Jasjas, where did you see about Jag 3 day week please?

jasjas1973 · 17/09/2018 13:43

Here you go...

frankiestein401 · 17/09/2018 14:01

tourism is around 11% of spanish gdp ~20% of that is down to uk tourism - ie ~2.5% spanish gdp.
since the brexit vote spanish gdp has grown at around 3% the uk gdp has been less than 0.5% .

The growth we gave up, by the brexit vote, means that even spain's weakening economy has already made up what it would lose if uk tourism halted overnight.

1tisILeClerc · 17/09/2018 14:26

Thanks Jasjas
I wonder who to believe, a guy running a large production facility or a Tory MP?
