This may be the last Brexit Arms thread that I will host.

It was intended to be a non-partisan and relatively light hearted thread for posters on both sides of the divide, but unfortunately this seems to have proved impossible so far.

It is not supposed to be a place for the disgruntled Remainer to use as an outlet to abuse and kick out at their perceived enemy.

I will give it one last go in the hope that things will change.

So.... onwards to Brexit....

Afternoon,
Hope it's not last Brexit Arms, where else on Mn, would I get to hear other leavers thoughts. If it is thanks to Brexit arms landlady for hosting it lately and Hi to surferjet, Faith and Co.
I watched Daily Politics, today, funny how remainers loving Labours new stance, when it was pointed out it was just another form of having your cake and eat it, which you all hate TM and co for.
Rebecca Long Bailey, said no freedom of movement, no SM but a new CU treaty, not same as this present one but bespoke like Turkey/Switzerland.
So what is different to TM.
Love once again that Londoners/southerners still expect the north to be abandoned to keep them cosy/rich from Eu.

bearbehind · 26/02/2018 14:40

No what is different to TM

Not much- only the massive fact that Labours new stance is actually possible in practice Hmm

Staying in a/the CU is essentially paying for access.

It’s akso compatible with no hard border in NI.

DGRossetti · 26/02/2018 14:49

.

mummmy2017 · 26/02/2018 14:52

For any of this to happen Labour NEED to the ones at the table.

We will have to go with what is happening , not what you want to happen.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 26/02/2018 14:53

*what is different to TM

Not much- only the massive fact that Labours new stance is actually possible in practice* Hmm

How?! How?!

Labour's position today:

A customs union, with free trade, no free movement and the ability to make individual trade deals with other countries.

Pray tell how you regard this as 'possible in practice' when you deride similar suggestions from the Tories as 'cake & eat it'.

user1471450935 · 26/02/2018 14:53

Two more things

  1. Bear and co, you keep asking Faith, Surfer and Mummy, what they will compromise, so what are you going to comprise, you all want BINO/remain. Tories and Labour both say not happening, or the EU reject their proposals. So are you ok with no freedom of movement, no SM, no CU or are you only willing to stay?
  2. When I joined I said I hoped for a sensible immigration policy as a positive from Brexit, lots thought I was a Racist/Xenophobic, well listening to Rebecca Long Bailey today, Labour's new immigration policy is:- No fixed numbers, proper quotas lead by skill shortages BUT full funding to address the lack of proper training for Uk citizens. I was dismissed as silly/stupid. Should of patented it and sold it to Labour. So Mummy2017, often calls Brexit right, I called Labour's immigration policy right, be interesting to see if Surferjet's/Faith's predictions come true through TM's Friday speech Maybe Politian's are slowly realising leaving the Eu will happen, it won't be all bad and there are sensible options to follow. Even if it is often ridiculed by remainers. Flowers and Caketo everyone,as we wait for Friday's speech. It may be brilliant Smile
LondonMum8 · 26/02/2018 14:55

"it was just another form of having your cake and eat it,"

Who knew Brexiters will one day have to fall back to ridiculing the cake. What's next? This whole stupid Brexit was Remainers' idea, wasn't it?

bearbehind · 26/02/2018 14:58

Pray tell how you regard this as 'possible in practice' when you deride similar suggestions from the Tories as 'cake & eat it'

Can you really not see the difference?

The Tories have ruled out a or the CU which means there has to be restrictions on trade and a border in NI.

Labour are essentially saying they’d go for BINO.

The so called red line on FOM would be paid for by our loss at the table in the EU.

Other than that we’ll still pay the EU for access and still have to abide by their rules.

Trade agreements with other countries have always been possible whilst in the CU- look at Germany and China.

mummmy2017 · 26/02/2018 14:58

DAVID CAMERON.

Oh yes he was a remain , who did al this and NEVER thought he would lose..

All we did was tick the box, as the stupid twat gave us that right.

MichaelBendfaster · 26/02/2018 14:59

Love once again that Londoners/southerners still expect the north to be abandoned to keep them cosy/rich from Eu.

I don't get this.

mummmy2017 · 26/02/2018 15:00

Wow a PM swap, with no election and in time to do the dirty deal, before March.

user1471450935 · 26/02/2018 15:02

Faith,
That's what I don't get Labour policy is cake and eat, NO SM, no freedom of movement, BUT a new CU treaty, how long will that take to negotiate, not weeks,. Tusk/Barnier keep saying that's impossible for Eu to agree
It must be because it comes from a party, people think "secretly" wants us to stay, and will in 2 years abandon leave, and stay.
Think that would kill Labour as a party of northern working class, at moment it seems to be party of certain newspaper reading upper middle class southerners, it go like Scottish Labour.

mummmy2017 · 26/02/2018 15:03

It's that Labour will abandon the North,, and their voters views. to keep down south happy...

bearbehind · 26/02/2018 15:03

So are you ok with no freedom of movement, no SM, no CU or are you only willing to stay?

user, once again your posts baffles me.

I’ve already lost, I don’t need to compromise, I’d just like to see the damage limited.

Right now I’m interested in what is actually possible and no SM/CU and no hard border is not possible.

MichaelBendfaster · 26/02/2018 15:05

It's that Labour will abandon the North,, and their voters views. to keep down south happy...

Of course, some northern constituencies are/will be the worst hit by Brexit.

But never mind, eh. Sovereignty and all.

mummmy2017 · 26/02/2018 15:09

There will be extra money around once we leave, this could be invested in helping to increase industry.

DGRossetti · 26/02/2018 15:10

Of course, some northern constituencies are/will be the worst hit by Brexit

Or, more probably, the children there.

Despite joining the EEC in 1973, it took a good 15 years for the benefits to start kicking in appreciably. That's pretty much a generation.

LondonMum8 · 26/02/2018 15:12

"There will be extra money around once we leave"

That's one of the key components of the big Brexit con. What money?

user1471450935 · 26/02/2018 15:13

Micheal,
I have on last thread listed £855 million investment in Hull (northern city in decline since 1969) plus millions more for Grimsby, Lincoln and success of British Steel in Scunthorpe. Not Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester etc.
Southerners on here:- LondonMum8, Tailkinpeace and others said it was pigeon feed to what would be lost to London/SE economy.
Someone even suggested north could be forgot about/ northern powerhouse a gimmick. Had to stay in at all costs, well as a northerner, who now accepts leave could be positive, see above, I just get feeling as long as the south is okay in EU that the north can go fly
Don't forget Hull, ERYC, NE lincs, N Lincs and Lincolnshire regions all voted to leave by 65% and more, so not the 52/48 nationally.

mummmy2017 · 26/02/2018 15:20

That's one of the key components of the big Brexit con. What money?

What do you mean you dont' know we have to PAY to be in the EU...

PAY TO STAY..

JC new idea, lets just do as we are told, for ever. Labour has no balls anymore.

LondonMum8 · 26/02/2018 15:20

", I just get feeling as long as the south is okay in EU that the north can go fly"

That's gross misunderstanding. We are just saying that if the SE goes down, everything else will follow given where the money is coming from. Financial services contribute c.a. £70bln in direct TAX. Hope it's now clear that the EU membership fee is a good deal for the UK.

bearbehind · 26/02/2018 15:20

There will be extra money around once we leave

Most Leavers don’t even believe that anymore.

The talk now is about short term pain for long term gain.

LondonMum8 · 26/02/2018 15:23

"What do you mean you dont' know we have to PAY to be in the EU..."

Well, you can't be an adult with a GCSE in maths if you are thinking we can just credit our account with EU membership fees without considering the other effects of Brexit. See above.

MichaelBendfaster · 26/02/2018 15:24

Yes, what LondonMum said about financial services. I know it's currently fashionable to rubbish trickle-down economics, but the SE financial services industry generates a huge amount of money for the whole of the UK.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 26/02/2018 15:27

Leavers still peddling the north vs south bullshit. Brexit will damage the entire country but it is already depressed areas that will suffer the most.

As I stated earlier the major northern cities voted remain. It was the satellite towns that voted out. Places like Knowsley/St Helens that have done well out of EU funding. Go figure.

Leavers like to peddle the idea that due to paying for EU membership there is no money for anything else. Yet in recent years the UK has managed to fund the olympics, trident, Iraq war, HS2 whilst an EU member. What I also said this morning was that there has been no political will to help depressed smaller northern towns by UK governments. It was UK governments that helped strip away these places resources in the 70's and 80's. There is no indication to suggest this will change post Brexit.
