In most life- changing decisions, there is a get-out clause. If you buy a house with rising damp, you can pull out before completion, you can break off an engagement if your Mr. Right turns out to be Mr. Notquite. I assume most reasonable people would like the opportunity to have a look at the brexit deal we get from the EU and decide if that's really the best way forward. A general election is the ultimate 'holding to account'. The idea that we are in some more mendacious era of politics is very debatable. I think TB was peak lying, personally.

Someone said it allows May to have her mandate. In order to go to the country again to get a new mandate and change the fixed term, the Con's should have to win a motion of no confidence in their gov't or change the law.

Did May vote for the fixed term parliament act? No way should Labour just give them what they want. They should have ot work for it.
