But equal amount of people loved their private school and same who hated state. this is why I want to keep as much choice as possible. All dc different if anything we need more than school with more
variety. I hate idea of closing all schools bar comps. Inkanta if your still around I am late to taboo party and tom hardy, however I think I am on everyone's page now Grin

boredofbrexit · 25/02/2017 12:49

MrExit, I haven't fully caught up but I did manage to gaze for some time at a promo shot with Inkantas quote running through my mind!

boredofbrexit · 25/02/2017 12:58

IMO Comps could work if they introduced setting in some academic subjects like maths and science, and rethought the curriculum so not everyone had to do the same make up of subjects at GCSE. And introduced more sport and stuff the private schools include like Lamda, Cadets, work experience etc. Then grammar schools would not be needed. But I can't see how it helps by banning private schools - which are stuffed full of overseas students now anyway...maybe there should be a way of returning the money raised from them that is over and above domestic fees, back into the state education budget? or, where employers are paying fees - maybe this could be subject to a tax?

Grin lying in bed ill, can think of anything better than this deliciousness to indulge

howabout · 25/02/2017 14:33

bored apart from the Glasgow and Edinburgh private schools, which are struggling to keep up with East Renfrewshire State schools, Scotland is almost fully comp. The Curriculum for Excellence has not sidelined sport and the arts in the same way the options have been narrowed in England. There is generally setting in age 13+ maths and english. All the comps I know about provide work experience, DofE etc.

The model is there but I find it very difficult to see how England would manage to unwind all the fragmentation and spurious choice. I think the decimation of the Arts in English education is absolute vandalism. You need the creativity of the arts to bring about high value innovation which is what we aspire to have drive our economy.

I wouldn't ban private schools but your points on overseas students and employer subsidies are well made.

Just sung Flower of Scotland in full gutteral Glaswegian much to the amusement of sassenach DH. Can hardly bear to watch my lads getting bashed about the rugby pitch so just as well I only have DDs. [whisky]

boredofbrexit · 25/02/2017 16:29

Get well soon MrE. Hot toddy is the order of the day. (and hot choc for SemiLad)

Thats what I'm having, frozen and soaked from spectating at netball and lacrosse. But not as frozen and wet as himself on the golf course, serves him right!)

boredofbrexit · 25/02/2017 16:30

Oh Howabout! My very bigly crossing the border favourites!

boredofbrexit · 25/02/2017 16:46

Howabout, I am out of touch with education in scotland and my own is a dim distant memory. But I'd wager it beats schools down here - not all, I think many primary schools do well and a fair number of secondaries - but I think theres something to be said for knowing there is no question that all your children will be going to your local school, it terms of stability for the family. And the school knows it is serving its local, settled community who will call it out if required.

I had a helluva shock when my sons nursery asked me, when he was just four, what school he was going to. I said, oh it'll be next September. She looked at me like I was mad but thats what happened when i went to school, you got a letter from the Council and started in the September at your local school after you turned five.

What a scrabble then to get him a place somewhere.

SemiPermanent · 26/02/2017 10:02

Another Sunday = another remote rugby pitch where I am wasting another few hours of my life that I can never get back.....
Le sigh.

howabout · 26/02/2017 11:50

Watching it on the telly is much more civilised Semi but I was wishing I was at Murrayfield yesterday. Just to add insult to injury DD2 was trekking all over Edinburgh on a field trip and completely missed the historic victory.

TheFullMrexit · 26/02/2017 20:50

Thanks for for well wishes Smile still not well but my goodness what a wonderful weekend I have had watching taboo back to back. Star semi how is the disgruntled little dragon.

SemiPermanent · 26/02/2017 22:03

SemiPermanent · 27/02/2017 12:29

Just watching Liz Kendall on the Daily Politics - she's coming across stronger & stronger all the time now.

What negatives does she have???
(I don't know enough about her!)

TheFullMrexit · 28/02/2017 16:16

Nice and quiet in the arms, it's kicking off elsewhere though Shock

boredofbrexit · 28/02/2017 16:31

I know...I offered to take them a nice drink over...Grin

SemiPermanent · 28/02/2017 16:43

It's not kicking off enough lately!
(I miss vanillasugar... Grin)

It's all a bit quiet on the Brexit front at the mo...
I expect the bill will be sent back to the commons with an amendment to protect the rights of EU citizens currently here - that's no bad thing really as far as I'm concerned, I expected that to have been put in at the initial commons stage tbh.

The sooner A50 is triggered the better.

VanillaSugar · 28/02/2017 17:02
