boredofbrexit · 28/02/2017 21:56

Didn't hear a peep from them beforehand though, when they all thought they'd win.

Exactly what I thought Mrexit Grin

bored all like to go around telling everyone else what's good for them with absolutely no lived experience to justify their fine pronouncements.

In fairness to Major, Obama, Mandelson, Clegg and Osborne they did have a moan pre-ref, just a pity they were moaning about future risk as opposed to present failure. Their records don't exactly confer credibility. Shock

Here's a radical idea -
Wasn't sure where to post this :

news.sky.com/story/uk-should-adopt-trump-style-border-tax-says-former-chancellor-lord-lawson-10786052

Just the sort of thing Spreadshseet Phil might think about if there is no trade deal....make inward investment unbelievably attractive, and stop the arbitrage of moving businesses to Luxembourg to book profits from sales etc

howabout · 01/03/2017 10:14

In contrast Dyson putting his money where his mouth is and investing in UK plc. If he ever produces a hoover which can cope with all my teenagers long hair and not need constant emptying and detangling I may have to buy one.

howabout · 01/03/2017 10:42

Lady definitely makes sense for the UK with its massive trade deficit in manufactured goods and if nothing else helps to concentrate the minds on the other side of the table in terms of the consequences for them of no deal.

InformalRoman · 01/03/2017 13:56

In contrast Dyson putting his money where his mouth is and investing in UK plc

And massively investing in Singapore plc as well:

"It is no coincidence that we are deepening our investment in Singapore to achieve our technology ambitions. Right here, some of the world's brightest minds are working on artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, fluid dynamics, vision systems to bring hardware, electronics and software together," said Dyson founder and owner, James Dyson.

howabout · 01/03/2017 14:17

All about building global partnerships Informal

InformalRoman · 01/03/2017 15:08

Yeah, right. Dyson was busy building "global partnerships" when he moved 600 manufacturing jobs from the UK to Malaysia in 2002 as well then?

howabout · 01/03/2017 17:16

Interesting discussion on robotics and job threat.

Yawn Ghost.

www.theguardian.com/society/2009/may/08/poverty-equality-britain-incomes-poor

Britain under Gordon Brown is a more unequal country than at any time since modern records began in the early 1960s, after the incomes of the poor fell and those of the rich rose in the three years after the 2005 general election

In a further blow, the government failed to make a dent in the number of children or pensioners living in poverty after big increases the previous year. Almost 17,000 more children in England are on free school meals this year compared with last, according to government data also published yesterday

Since Tony Blair's third election victory, the poorest 10% of households have seen weekly incomes fall by £9 a week to £147 once inflation is accounted for, while those in the richest 10% of homes have enjoyed a £45 a week increase to £1,033

Snore MrExit

Britain most unequal country in the EU - 2015

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/report-finds-that-britains-wages-are-the-most-unequal-in-europe-10259077.html

although shock horror, this think tank is linked to the EU, so not to be trusted.

I can't find you a link from the Telegraph or the Mail covering this news, surprise surprise, so it's probably a shock to you to discover that things have moved on since 2009.

howabout · 02/03/2017 14:13

Intrigued to know what the Gini coefficient is between the highest paid Germans and the lowest paid Romanians now. Also wonder what the impact of youth unemployment of 40%+ in Greece, Italy and Spain is.

If wage rates were comparatively so dreadful in the UK then there would not be a net migration issue.

howabout · 02/03/2017 14:20

Semi you asked about Liz Kendall ages ago. My kneejerk reaction is that she is a Blairite who was a "special" adviser prior to becoming an MP in 2010. On nuclear, benefits cap, prioritising childcare over education etc I tend not to be on the same side of the debate as her. However perhaps she is right in looking to work with the possible rather than hoping to bring the electorate back to the sense of the collective good.

Given her lack of actual government and limited shadow experience it is difficult to pin down her core values and her level of pragmatism makes it even more challenging.
