If wage rates were comparatively so dreadful in the UK then there would not be a net migration issue.

There are skills shortages at the top and at the bottom hence a need for economic migrants to fill the void.

The reality for most people in the UK regardless of nationality is that they are being squeezed financially by austerity and by regressive neo liberal economics. Here is what Thatcher's "home owning democracy" looks like today;

Currently in Vienna where the cake, shoes and handbags are lush. Had dinner with a Greek lady who works for the Greek FO, and she is angry about lack of EU help with the migrant crisis.i

Has to be through before QMV gets applied.

InfiniteSheldon · 03/03/2017 08:30

time4chocolate · 03/03/2017 19:15

Scary - sounds like you had a good day yesterday. Yes, definitely needs to be triggered before OMV.

What would your friend like to see happen regarding Greece? they seem to be between a rock and a hard place and not getting much assistance from anyone.

time4chocolate · 03/03/2017 19:24

QMV it should say

howabout · 04/03/2017 10:53

Interesting expansion of the BoE analysis we discussed in December on the impact of low skill migration.

Back in Brussels after Vienna.

Had some interesting conversations...the Greek lady seems to think that migration cannot be stopped, but that it has to be dealt with, and that Greece needs EU help to do so. We talked about quotas for countries, but ultimately these are pointless if the host nation doesn't want migrants, or the migrants don't want to go there. Spoke to a Hungarian who said the Hungarian govt sees itself as defending the European Christian culture, and interestingly some Austrians seemed to have the same take on it. Spoke about how hard integration was for some cultures, especially as Europe is not a male dominated society as some others are.

With Greece, I did suggest that the surplus in the current account that Germany has (and has avoided being fined for again), should be put toward the Greek debt, but that just got a wry smile.

TheFullMrexit · 05/03/2017 18:28

I posted this on the other thread re Brexit leaving costs. May as well post here as well, cheeky buggers!

Has anyone referenced front page of The Times yet on March 3rd?

"Despite voting to Leave the EU Brit Tax payers will contribute more than
£230 million to the bill, more than twice the annual cost of running the house of Lords. ....help fund a "private army" to protect MEPS as part of EU spending spree" shock

"4.5 million towards pro - EU publicity campaign for the 2019 elections, which don't even include Britain"

MEP Jonathon Arnott said " The EU Parliaments costs continue to spiral out of control, now including a private army." He is opposed to the increase and the EU default of ....."spending more money".

"Easy ways to cut costs have been ignored year in and year out".

"Last year the parliament decided to spend 3.7 million more on its own limousines and uniformed chauffeurs. Both guards and drivers will be required to make the 550 mile round trip to Strasbourg once a month leading to another 1.2 million in costs"

InfiniteSheldon · 05/03/2017 20:37

Those figures make me feel physically sick, such utter bureaucratic abuse how can anyone support this corrupt bunch of thieves

SemiPermanent · 06/03/2017 08:18

I saw that too Mrexit - I was unsurprised to not see it commented on anywhere.

A lot of attention given to how much we rely on the EU (single market etc) but the EU needs us too - they need our money to keep the vanity side of the project going.

TheFullMrexit · 06/03/2017 21:30

Yes lovely feeling funding limos for the like of that Guy Vertsgahst (SP) Angry can't wait to be out of it. Let France and Germany pick up that bill.

Yea it was a thread in this EU referendum 2016 section over the weekend, lots of hand wringing about how anyone without an English accent is being forced to go 'home'. Specifically Australians in this case.

aka Brexiteers are xenophobic, racist, fascist, hate mongers destroying a once liberal, open, fluffy UK that welcomed all races, religions and cultures of the world without asking them to fill in a form, or contribute a penny....

InfiniteSheldon · 07/03/2017 11:03

Anecdotal made up crap! I read that thread and asked my Australian friend who actually lolled she said the general attitude from Brits is that Aussie are a sort of family member and viewed as always welcome and the Referendum hasn't changed anything. But that's just my anecdotal evidence Grin

Not long now folks, the Blair group has gone suspiciously quiet! Wonder what nasties they will try and throw up.

scaryteacher · 08/03/2017 17:25

The EU will be throwing up nasties of its own. All gone quite quiet lately on the Italian banking crisis, and Greece has to repay € several (7?) billion that it doesn't have to its creditors soon, one of whom won't negotiate on the repayment, as elections are happening there in September, so not the NL (March) and not France (April). That leaves???? One contact of mine thinks that between them Germany and Turkey will turn Greece into a dumping ground for migrants..
