Go on. Lets have some answers.
Can we have a proper talk about how we can stop this affront to democracy and ripping up of a peace plan?

I am interested in how peace can continue & progress within Ireland.

Ireland is quite peaceful, thank you.

You meant NI, I presume?

From the Grauniad - James Brokenshire, on the NI / RoI border.

Surely, that will still mean NI residents, who are UK citizens, having to show ID to get on to the mainland. No-one has to do that crossing the Severn Bridge or on roads between England and Scotland.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 10/10/2016 12:13

Patty I read it as the border controls will be in Dublin not in NI. So still no passport control between NI and GB but at ROI entry points. Which makes no sense.

OlennasWimple · 10/10/2016 12:23

i read it the same way, Patty. Which makes some sense, in that arrivals to ROI will cross a "hard border" but then there will remain a (very) "soft border" between north and south.

I'm not sure whether the EU rules that the ROI will continue to be bound by will continue to allow things like mutual visa recognition between the UK and ROI, though. And it's hard to see how the customs border will work, unless everyone decides to basically ignore it...

NuggetofPurestGreen · 10/10/2016 12:51

But say someone is an EU citizen so can freely enter Ireland but not UK. So they arrive at Dublin airport and are told come on in - but don't go to NI as you aren't allowed in there? How will it be checked?

Maybe I'm missing something very obvious but it's hurting my head to think about it!

TKRedLemonade · 12/10/2016 20:50

You are not missing anything Nugget that's exactly why it's stupid idea,

Of note the way this was reported here in ROI was that the UK wanted to make the Island of Ireland, NI and ROI, a hard border to protect the the UK due to your problem mentioned. In other words they want to make us implement the UK custom controls at our ports and airports to protect the UK.... And we will have to pay for it....Trumps Mexican wall anyone?

Also making the People of NI literally second class citizens by needing passports to travel to the rest of the U.K. Is obv a fabulous idea that the loyalists will have no issue with Hmm

Also the EU will most likely not allow the UK to dictate to an EU country ( even if some of the eejits in our gov might)
