PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

The fact that it is being investigated for fraud puts it under suspicion, and there is a possibility that parliament won't touch it until after the investigation is completed.

I actually think there's a real chance that Boris Johnson will do everything he possibly can to back pedal on this. I think he is well aware that leaving the EU is a disastrous move.

I am actually confident that he will be at least considering a second referendum as a way out. I really hope he is a decent enough chap to sacrifice his (admittedly sketchy) reputation for the good of the land.

I actually quite like him, in spite of myself.

Blimey.

WaspsandBeesSting · 27/06/2016 11:03

Because of threads like this, Tanith, where people think that the more people sign it, the more chance of a second referendum

Clutching at straws comes to mind.

He has won numerous prizes for his writing and he is the epitome of a journalist politician - he has a way with words. Doesn't mean he means anything he says

I'm fully aware of that, and need no reminders about the duplicity of politicians in general and him in particular. That's why I said it was well written not that I agreed with it ... also why I wrote "I hope he means it" rather than trusting he did

Oh, and on the 3.6 million signatures - how many of those are from the Vatican City? Wink Grin

Even if 90% of them were fraudulent (curse those bastards - do they think they're doing it any favours? Angry ), it's still well above the 100,000 needed for a debate in Parliament.

Not that they would ignore it anyway. I imagine there is a lot of talk going on - "How the actual fuck are you going to deal with this Boris, you twat?" is what I'd be asking if I was Theresa May etc.

Collymollypuff · 27/06/2016 12:42

It matters that the media are interested in this poll. The media interest also means that any fraudulent signatures will be uncovered and removed.

Schwabischeweihnachtskanne · 27/06/2016 12:44

HereSheComestoSavetheDay I think that is what Boris relies on - that people quite like the silly chap and think he's basically decent .... he is highly intelligent and pretty reckless and possibly completely amoral IMO and absolutely clearly a consummate game player; I'll buy a hat to eat if he genuinely sacrifices his political career to do "the right thing for Britain".

OrangesandLemonsNow · 27/06/2016 12:48

Needed to be considered for a debate.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 27/06/2016 12:52

Needed to be considered for a debate

Ah ok. But it's three times that number, even if 90% of them were ineligible.

Besides, it's not just Brits who are crapping themselves about Brexit. There are some pretty worried people in the US government too. I just read a piece in the Washington Post.

Schwabischeweihnachtskanne · 27/06/2016 12:56

In all honesty though I think Theresa May is far, far more dangerous - its not a game to her, but she appears to be genuinely and ideologically against the right to peaceful protest, against all equality legislation, against pretty much every type of civil right currently protected, against foreigners generally... It would be pretty alarming to see what would change if she were PM...

Schwabischeweihnachtskanne · 27/06/2016 12:58

Puzzledandpissedoff sorry I misread the tone and thought you were surprised it was well written and actually thought he might mean it - didn't mean to be patronising, I am projecting the fact I unthinkingly believed the buffoon act while he was mayor.

Collymollypuff · 27/06/2016 12:59

Let's not have a Tory PM then.

It really makes no difference how many signatures you may have on a petition.

People in here have admitted they have signed numerous times.

They won't be weeded out.

All parties said they would abide by the decision.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/06/2016 13:09

No, no - don't apologize Schwab If anything, the fault was mine for not making myself clear Flowers

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 27/06/2016 13:10

People on here have admitted they have signed numerous times? I missed that. You bloody idiots, whoever you are. This is a petition to Parliament, not a game. FFS, I despair.

And this is where the remain campaign are letting themselves down.
Acting like children over this.

NowWhat1983 · 27/06/2016 13:26

3,700,155 signatures

And 16 million voted remain. A vast majority of those appear to be taking defeat on the chin.

Just the hysterical ones many of whom were not eligible to vote in the first place are signing this.

Collymollypuff · 27/06/2016 13:26

If a government website set up to further democracy allows citizens to vote more than once, then that is a flaw in the govt system which needs to be sorted out - at once. The more people respond to this petition, the more demand there will be for the whole system to be genuine, and not fucked up by idiots. The last petition I got involved in - through MN - was for more research into brain tumours in children. If it is to work, the system needs to be administered effectively.

Collymollypuff · 27/06/2016 13:28

"sign" the petition, not "vote"

Honestly, the govt set the online petition system up as part of democracy

NowWhat1983 · 27/06/2016 13:29

It is a flaw but the problem is it cannot be policed. It just asks you to confirm your address is valid: email that is.

I have more than one email address one for work, etc. Therein lies the problem.

Collymollypuff · 27/06/2016 13:37

Well, if the govt system is flawed, just as well they find that out, eh?

OrangesandLemonsNow · 27/06/2016 13:38

Well, if the govt system is flawed, just as well they find that out, eh?

They are.

The petition will still be ignored.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/06/2016 13:39

It is a flaw but the problem is it cannot be policed

Which is perhaps why - apart from making folk feel a bit better - many petitions are a complete waste of time Hmm

That said, I worry that some politicians might wave it around as some sort of "justification" ... not because they believe it has any merit, but simply because they feel it might help them in what they want to do anyway: ignoring a democratically organized poll
