PETITION FOR A SECOND REFERENDUM - 1 million + signatures already

GertrudeBelle · 25/06/2016 11:10

A parliamentary petition has been created calling for a second referendum. As I type, it already has 1,061,466 signatures and the number is growing rapidly so it will have to be taken seriously.

I would urge everyone who is concerned about the consequences of yesterday's result to sign it. It only takes a minute. Get your friends and family to sign too.

There's also a map showing the location of the signatories. There are some key Remain territories which don't seem to have picked this up - particularly Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please spread the word. Map here:

It's wishful thinking for Brexiteers to say the petition will be ignored.

I got a load of emails following my signing of the petition for more research into brain tumours in children, and the system seemed very effective to me. I was impressed by how much info I got, in exchange for two seconds of my time.

GloriaGaynor · 27/06/2016 13:54

Let's hope he means it

Of course he doesn't mean it, it's common knowledge Boris isn't anti-EU, he was saying Brexit would be disastrous until January. He's too intelligent for that. It was purely a career gamble for him to get enough support to boost his ambitions to be PM.

And even if he did, it's still bollocks. The verdict of history will be that this it the point that the UK wrote themselves out of it.

Expect we won't leave, we'll now be stuck in a stalemate of wrangling for years while the economy suffers.

NowWhat1983 · 27/06/2016 14:02

Yes these petitions are a waste of time.

Some of my facebook friends are lobbying everyone to sign: they are lawyers FFS. They must know they do nothing.

Collymollypuff · 27/06/2016 14:07

Are you not reading other people's posts, NowWhat?

RedToothBrush · 27/06/2016 14:08

A House of Commons spokesperson told Metro.co.uk the petition will be debated at a meeting of the government’s Petitions Committee on Tuesday.

It's been 'committeed'. It will not be discussed in the main chamber.

spiney · 27/06/2016 14:23

I 'm REmain. Someone suggested I sign this yesterday. But it made me feel uneasy.

A petition signature isn't a vote. We had that last Thurs. At the referendum.
That was democracy wasn't it? Do we keep re voting till we get the democracy we like?

What do you think that seriously this petition will achieve or can achieve?

3 million signatures is a small % of the millions of VOTERS who VOTED to Leave.

Collymollypuff · 27/06/2016 15:21

Petitioning and lobbying your MP are both part of the democratic process.

Dear God.

firesidechat · 27/06/2016 15:39

But overturning referendums aren't part of the democratic process.

It's not happening.

Hopefully we can all calm down and accept this is the situation we are in and try to make it work.

akkakk · 27/06/2016 16:04

A House of Commons spokesperson told Metro.co.uk the petition will be debated at a meeting of the government’s Petitions Committee on Tuesday.

It's been 'committeed'. It will not be discussed in the main chamber.

The petitions committee simply decides which petitions go forward to the main chamber - this doesn't mean that it won't simply when that decision will be made

spiney · 27/06/2016 16:32

collymollypuff I know.

And as before, what can this petition achieve, that the referendum a few days ago, didn't?

GloriaGaynor · 27/06/2016 17:04

You realise Cameron has stated that UK will not trigger formal exit talks at this stage and accepted there's a case for an early election?

neverknowinglywrong · 27/06/2016 17:31

Cameron has said today there won't be a second referendum and that we will be going ahead with preparing to leave the EU.

RedToothBrush · 27/06/2016 17:38

Oh Bugger

ManonLescaut · 27/06/2016 17:53

No, Cameron has actually said today:

"The British government will not be triggering Article 50 at this stage]]

"That is rightly something for the next Prime Minister and Cabinet to decide".

He also accepted there was a case for an early election.

Grassgreendashhabi · 27/06/2016 17:55

Article 50 I thought was when WE (the UK) decided to implement not when the EU want us too.

RedToothBrush · 27/06/2016 17:59

Manon, the EU have told us to trigger A50 tomorrow or Weds. Or so it appears.

neverknowinglywrong · 27/06/2016 18:03

Well that's funny Manon because I watched it all and he said there would be no second referendum and that a new EU unit has been set up to help negotiations and smooth any transitional issues.

neverknowinglywrong · 27/06/2016 18:07

Seriously - google it, read the news, watch the reports, read the Cabinet statement - it has been confirmed today there will be no second referendum! I'm not making it up! Grin Hmm

ManonLescaut · 27/06/2016 18:16

A second referendum is irrelevant if Cameron's not triggering Brexit and there's a general election.

He told Merkel and Hollande that more negotiations were needed before the UK will start the process of separating from the EU.

And Merkel has stated that the UK must have time to reflect.

He also stated: 'This is our sovereign decision and it will be for Britain, and Britain alone, to take.'

Ie it will be done to our timetable.

SayWhat123 · 27/06/2016 19:17

This site has a lot of real time algorithms which were ran and show Kim Jung Il signed it himself over 5,000 times and nearly 30,000 signatures from North Korea which is the most internet restricted country in the world.

It's a 4Chan hack and more people signed from Vatican City than even live there.

Quite hilarious how it was done and that the media was actually reporting on this as if it was real LOL - reporting how amazing it was so many from N Korea signed it bc they don't actually have the internet! Media is a bunch of numpties and this proves it.

The petition is now marred and there is no way to prove who is legit and who is fake. Has to be scrapped - no integrity in it whatsoever.

Carapepi77 · 27/06/2016 20:15

If there are any non UK ip addresses they will be discarded. You also have to put your postcode in to sign the petition. I build websites for a living and any false signatures will be counted and discarded in the website analytics. So the final count will reflect the true numbers that have signed it.
I think this will help the government to see that a lot of people didn't have a clue what they were doing and this petition will reflect that with the unsure or no turn outs signing it.

Livingtothefull · 27/06/2016 20:30

It is a Government petition, up there on the Government website; surely if it was corrupted/discredited it would have been taken down by now?

It is a legitimate part of the democratic process so anyone eligible who wishes to should sign it. Really from the number of comments that it is 'pointless' signing or that the petition is 'corrupt' you would think that a lot of individuals did not want too many signing it?

The more people sign the more it will demonstrate the strength of feeling among people that a decision as serious and irrevocable as this, which has huge implications for us all, should not go ahead without a much more rigorous process than such a narrow majority vote.

A second referendum does not need to mean merely a re-run to get the 'right' result - but possibly a comprehensive Brexit plan to be presented to voters as an alternative to staying in the EU, so at least people know exactly what they are voting for. I think we are entitled to that.

allegretto · 27/06/2016 20:31

You don't have to put in your postcode if you sign it from overseas - which you are entitled to do as a British citizen.

KJJDMB · 27/06/2016 20:36

To be honest I find it offence that you feel everyone who voted leave did so due to false promises. I thought long and hard, researched and based my vote on the arrogance of the EU and all the reasons I dislike it, think it doesn't work and is to the detriment of some member states - Greece, doing so well, Spain youth unemployment at 25% - I never once thought 350m would go to the nhs and to be honest that probably wouldn't solve the problem. Nor do I have a problem with immigration as we live in a rural area. So wind your neck in and get off your patronising high horse
