I don't think many people in the UK, and especially those who voted for this disaster, realise how bad the camps are for locals and refugees alike. They have been a huge blight on Calais for a long time now and I think France would be crazy to keep doing our dirty work for us.

I also think that in the UK it would be more chaotic in France as access to public services etc is not regulated through ID cards so you can see how irregular migration could be harder to police here.

lasttimeround · 27/06/2016 13:03

I've been so sad I can't believe I am feeling even sadder today. The Leave leaders seem to have disappeared and we're in limbo. Crazy xenophobia all over the place. We are EU nationals, lived in the UK for decades. For the first time I'm scared and I want to leave even tho I have no idea where we would go. Just crying at it all.

alteredimages · 27/06/2016 13:15

lasttimeround I know what you mean. I thought I would start to feel better with time but each day I wake up feeling worse. The Leave campaign's lack of a plan and the carnage in the Labour party are not helping at all, although I think Corbyn is being a selfish bastard by not resigning. I really thought he was better than that and I think his pisspoor effort on the Remain campaign means he bears a lot of the blame for the result. If only he had had the integrity to resign before the referendum and let a pro EU leader head a pro EU party. What he has shown so far just smacks of duplicity and cowardice.

You know what, my faith in democracy has been really shaken over the past five years, and not just because of this referendum.

I have spent most of that time in Egypt and we have had a whole lot of elections in which people have voted in the Muslim Brotherhood and Sisi. It has been a complete disaster and that is because of the narrow focus on voting and elections as the be all and end all of democracy instead of it being part of a wider democratic context of institution building, transparency, individual freedoms and accountability.

The British situation is different, but I still think there are parallels in terms of the lies and failure of the press to hold either side to account before and after the vote.

Voting is important, but it doesn't (or shouldn't) happen in a vacuum devoid of a wider democratic environment.

Latest Winnie The Pooh meme I've seen on facebook today:

"How did you vote?", asked Pooh
"Leave", said Piglet
"Oh, for fuck's sake", said Pooh, "Why the fuck did you do that?"

"Because if we leave, then we'll fix the NHS"
"We're not going to fix the NHS, Piglet, that was all bollocks. All the people who told you to vote Leave are the very same people who want to privatise the fucking thing"
"Oh. But anyway there's also those bloody Heffalumps"
"Heffalumps?"
"Yes, the bloody Heffalumps who keep coming to live in the wood, there are too many"
"But they do things for us, Piglet, and voting Leave won't actually stop them coming anyway"
"Oh. But I just want to get back control of the wood"
"You fucktard. You never had control of the wood, you're a fucking piglet. You're just going to get even more fucked over by different people"
"Oh. But why did you want to Remain?", asked Piglet
"I liked that everyone worked together, I felt safe"
"Is that all? You're probably still safe"
"I also fancied going to live in a different wood one day, and maybe if I had kids they would too, but now maybe we can't."
"Oh. But we'll have more honey to go around now...?"
"I'm afraid not, Piglet. We won't have to give away any honey, but there'll almost certainly be less to begin with"
"Oh. Well at least we've got rid of the pig-fucker, I didn't like him"
"I can understand that, Piglet, but have you seen the next guy!? I have a feeling he'll be doing more than just oral"
"Oh my. But they were going to build a huge scary super-wood"
"They never actually said that, and even if there were going to be a huge super-wood, would you rather be part of it, playing with all your new friends, or just outside it with nobody paying you any attention?"
"Oh, I see what you mean. But ours used to be the most important wood of all the woods"
"That's true, Piglet, but that was well over a hundred fucking years ago now, and none of us were alive. You really need to get your head out of your arse"
"But our grandparents won the big war to protect our wood, we need to make sure we keep it safe"
"Actually, that's a load of horse-shit. We won the big war to protect other people in other woods and to stop nationalist fuckers killing people because they were different. It showed that we're safer if we all work together and stop thinking of each other as different"
"But the Heffalumps, I don't like them, they're not like us"
"Fuck my luck. Piglet, you're a fucking Piglet and I'm a stuffed Bear. We're all different, that's what makes the wood a fun place to live. You like Kanga don't you? She's different"
"But Kanga's been here for ages and I like her food"
"Christ on a bike, Piglet, you are a fucking cockwomble"
"Beer?" asked Piglet
"You're buying" said Pooh, "and I want pork scratchings"
"Oh my"

wowfudge · 27/06/2016 20:04

I'm not sure I want to stay in a UK outside the EU, especially not with the racist bile some Brexiters have been spouting. DP is applying for his Irish passport. I keep bursting into tears when I think about all the things we could lose. I am a European citizen yet 37% of the electorate are taking that away from me.

whydidhesaythat · 27/06/2016 20:19

Loving the winnie the pooh stuff. Please link to more!

" and I like her food"

a much needed pmsl :)

CurbsideProphet · 27/06/2016 20:21

In some ways I feel like the whole thing is unreal. A couple of acquaintances on facebook have said things like "we all need to work together etc". I've done my part. I voted Remain to avoid all this uncertainty and the impending financial crash. I worry that with all the Labour resignations and Conservative fannying around, UKIP are going to swoop in. I don't think I could cope with Boris as PM, never mind a UKIP one.

alteredimages · 27/06/2016 20:31

This definitely isn't real. Peter Mandelson is being floated as a candidate for leadership of the Labour party. Peter Fucking Mandelson. I can see it now:

"Quick, the Conservatives are stealing our thunder. We don't have anyone divisive enough. They have BoJo, Gove and Osborne."

"I know, we'll have Peter Mandelson as leader."

It is as though Labour are determined to never win an election ever again. That or someone is pranking Laura Kuenssberg. Hopefully the latter.

DianaRoss · 27/06/2016 20:32

I was in Czechoslovakia when it broke up in1991., people genuinely feared war. It was the promise of joining the EU, which Havel passionately believed in, that saved the day

That may be so, and yet the Czechs are very territorial. I know Czechs well and EE too. They really do not like Poles, the Baltics, the Ukrainians coming to their country to seek work - and they make no bones about showing their displeasure.

CremeEggThief · 27/06/2016 20:35

Still fuming about this. Every time I think I have started to come to terms with it, something else triggers me off. I've had it with this country and I've decided to move back to Ireland in 5 years time, once DS has started university, and I lose all the financial benefits that not having to pay council tax or taxes entitle me to.

In the short term, I hope Iceland beat England tonight to upset a he'll of a lot of Leave voters.

CremeEggThief · 27/06/2016 20:36

Hell not he'll.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/06/2016 20:48

Kind of like it but it's a shame that even winnie the bloody pooh apparently uses offensive words like fucktard.

MitzyLeFrouf · 27/06/2016 20:57

Christopher Robin called someone a cunt earlier.

megletthesecond · 27/06/2016 21:04

Missed this thread on Friday morning. I was in bed listening to radio 4 in utter horror and desperately scrolling through my fb feed for similar minded friends. Need to stick around here I think. Still flitting between its a dream / we're fucked / fury.

whydidhesaythat · 27/06/2016 21:09

sorry fanjo I missed that bit.

We could edit it if the creator doesn't mind x

Notthiswankagain · 27/06/2016 21:44

I want to cry, I'm in NI and we are fucked. People who voted leave (half my family! For fucks sake!) have no comprehension of the mess we are in. We are a country who is recovering from civil war and we rely on EU money. Things were finally quietening down and now this. I spoke to a girl in work today who voted leave "because my family are English, and we plan to move back". She's 18, a nice girl, but I had to walk away because I'm so fucking angry.

We had a burgeoning film industry, it industries, call centres, financial institutions who will almost certainly pull out/lay people off. Shorts (aero were engineering) have contracts with the EU... The list goes on. And how are we going to cope with a hard border?

No politician is dealing with these questions. We have been forgotten. Nicola sturgeon is talking about a second referendum for Scotland, but who is fighting for Northern Ireland, we voted to remain too? The DUP wanted to leave so They wouldn't have to give equal rights to gay people and women and our so called first minister is more concerned with fucking football!

It's been four days and every time I think about it, I feel angry all and want to cry.

originalmavis · 27/06/2016 21:46

If you want to cheer yourself up a little turn over to the footie now. All those sad wee faces.

CremeEggThief · 27/06/2016 22:22

Ha! Hope this gives a lot of the fuckers who voted Leave something to cry about.Smile

Sirona · 27/06/2016 22:26

I hear you Notthiswankagain. I'm also in NI and I don't think the ones that voted to leave here have any idea of the consequences we have brought upon ourselves. I actually went through and deleted 30 people off my facebook today as I could no longer stand crowing about 'immigration'. I'm lgbt and a woman and we are are royally fucked now.

For the first time in my life I'm actually hoping for a united Ireland but I don't think they'd want us with all our issues and troubles and no money to boot.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/06/2016 23:45

Not your fault whydid Flowers

SugarPlumTree · 28/06/2016 06:33

Bugger. I keep waking up thinking i've had a horrible nightmare where we voted put and general carnage broke out, only to sleepily realise it's true. Wonder how many more days that will go on.

I'm so mot ready for all the we mist work toget her stiff and delete brexiters who say that. Luckily most of my FB friends were remain. My 70 year neighbour coming over later so we have have s depressed rant together.

I''m totally taken aback at how strongly i feel.My Mum died just under a month ago. She had cancer on top of Dementia. It was brutal at the end. My Brother said a few times afterwards that he felt a huge sense of loss, I just felt a great sadness at the time. I now feel a huge sense of loss but at this and nor losing her..

I wish I had words of comfort for you over in NI. In the Commons yesterday there were a few of your MPS and I think Cameron said there wouldn't be a border poll and he was committed to leaving the border open, but might have remembered wrong.
