Can anyone explain why the government and others are so desperate for us to stay?

I'm the first to admit that my knowledge of politics and economics is not great but it seems to me there must be more to it than we are being told. If they are getting so scared of a Leave vote that they have to threaten us with Emergency budgets etc what are they really worrying about? I just can't believe they have only the interests of the country at heart. What do they get out of it if we vote Remain?

winter any comment on leave getting sued by Nissan, Toyota et Al for including their logos on their leaflets?

Their group shouldn't have used the logos without permission.

Winterbiscuit · 21/06/2016 09:18

The point is, they signed the damn letter because they AGREE.

If the Leave side had chosen this strategy they could equally have come up with long lists of prominent people who agree with leaving the EU. But perhaps most of us don't feel represented by fat cats.

nearlyhellokitty · 21/06/2016 09:46

winter I don't think Leave would have. Because they don't have the same support from Prominent people. Don't imagine they haven't tried. In fact they have but the list is far shorter.

Chalalala · 21/06/2016 09:50

I think many of my colleagues who signed a Remain letter would choke on their tea to see themselves called "fat cats"... and demand a raise effective immediately Smile

(It's all relative, obviously. But academics are hardly investment bankers.)

OrangesandLemonsNow · 21/06/2016 10:03

The point is, they signed the damn letter because they AGREE.

They don't all agree. Sir Michael Rose doesn't.

Chalalala · 21/06/2016 10:28

Technically he didn't sign, his name was added without his consent (as I understand). So my point stands.

Winterbiscuit · 21/06/2016 10:57

Do we want to vote for what's best for "prominent people" or millions of ordinary citizens?

BeakyMinder · 21/06/2016 11:12

Well today we hear from George Soros that Brexit would cause a Black Friday - ie this Friday. A gigantic market crash.

www.theguardian.com/business/2016/jun/20/brexit-would-trigger-sterling-fall-worse-than-black-wednesday

Let's be clear about who suffers when the markets crash. It's ordinary people. Not the super-rich.

"He said that, as in 1992, there would be big financial gains for speculators who had bet on the UK leaving the EU but that such an outcome would leave “most voters considerably poorer”."

By the way George Soros isn't an 'expert' - or a politician - or someone with an EU axe to grind, he's an investor which means he makes money whether we're in or out.

Wake up.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/06/2016 11:20

Many ordinary people are suffering

What are they going to take away top up benefits they have been cut back. make people live in tenements, food rations, forced to work in workhouse in exchange for food

People are aware that they might suffer a while longer it's those that can't see that they are willing to take that gamble that need to wake up and see how desperate it has got for far too many people

nearlyhellokitty · 21/06/2016 11:33

There is going to be a lot more suffering with Brexit. And for years. For what?

By voting Leave you're not kicking the establishment in the balls - you're shooting yourself in the foot virg.in/remain #VoteRemain

BreakingDad77 · 21/06/2016 12:09

www.cityam.com/243684/nissan-has-today-launched-legal-action-against-brexit

“We have repeatedly asked Vote Leave to stop using our name and logo on their materials and to stop misrepresenting our views – a request that has clearly been denied.

“As such, we will be issuing legal proceedings today [June 20th] in the High Court asking for an injunction to stop Vote Leave’s use of Nissan’s name and logo, and to prevent them from making any further false statements and misrepresentations concerning Nissan.”

CoolforKittyCats · 21/06/2016 12:11

Remain have also used people words/ names/signatures without permission.

This isn't a one sided thing and both camps should stop.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 21/06/2016 12:13

I really don't think many people who are finding things difficult will take much notice of multi millionaire with business interests that suit him to stay in the EU lecturing what he thinks is best for them do you ?

Chalalala · 21/06/2016 12:21

People are aware that they might suffer a while longer it's those that can't see that they are willing to take that gamble that need to wake up

Well, it's not that I don't see that many people are desperate for a change, any change. It's pretty damn clear at this stage.

It's just a complete logical non sequitur to assume that this particular change will necessarily be for the better. Of course things can still get worse.

Winterbiscuit · 21/06/2016 13:08

"Black Friday" is when lots of bargains are on sale a few weeks before Christmas.

Did he mean "Black Wednesday"?

shinytorch2 · 21/06/2016 13:18

George Soros became a billionaire on the back of the bets he made about sterling and the ERM. He will have a currency position for this Friday too.....

wonder if that influences what he says....wonder how much he cares about "ordinary voters".....

Viviennemary · 21/06/2016 13:40

I don't care whether a few workers can get top-up tax credits or not. But to base the decision on whether to leave or remain to that great concession from our EU masters is just crazy. In any case all it will take is for somebody to take their case to the EU court and it will be overturned in a second. We need to be making our own decisions on what is best for this country. And not leave it to some supreme EU court that can over-rule anything our own MPs decide. Cameron is pulling the wool over our eyes. And Corbyn doesn't even like the EU. The big businesses and multi-millionaires love it. Why wouldn't they. And we're stuck with zero hour contracts and depression of wages.

Littlemisslovesspiders · 21/06/2016 14:10

It would seem that premier league football clubs weren't all consulted about using their logo either.

Crystal Palace have told them to remove it.

Can anyone explain why the government and others are so desperate for us to stay?
BeakyMinder · 21/06/2016 17:10

Lecturing? You haven't a clue who George Soros is. The bloke couldn't give 2 shiny shits what we think or do or vote. He'll make money either way. He's telling us what's going to happen. Giving factual information.

claig · 21/06/2016 17:38

Soros is pro EU and wants it to have more power.

"Hungarian Prime Minister accuses billionaire investor George Soros of trying to undermine Europe by supporting refugees travelling from the Middle East"

MrsBlackthorn · 21/06/2016 17:51

Soros doesn't give a sh*t who is in power - he just makes money. A lot of it.

DianaRoss · 25/06/2016 09:12

Our country has extricated itself from the most ambitious PONZI SCHEME, and by a margin of 1.2 million people.

UK never ever got back anywhere near what it put into this scheme.

Bernie Madoff pulled it off with worldly, sophisticated people. Ask yourselves - Merkel said that she wants our exit wrapped up swiftly in case there is a DOMINO EFFECT amongt some of the other member countries. Why would that be, if everything is hunky-dory in the club?

GoodLoveShinesBrightly · 25/06/2016 09:42

Dear God, people really think like this? Good luck on your little godforsaken island.
