Just thought I would start a thread for anyone who has applied for a place at BRIT school

OP posts:
Nunsmet22 · 04/03/2023 12:06

Hi @Pegjes44
so did we, workshop at 9 in the morning. I think it went well but we are shattered now! My son was really stressed out about the interview and what they might ask him and felt afterwards that he had talked too much and didn't say what 'they wanted to hear'. I thought it went fine - I was delighted he said anything at all in his state of terror! ;-) He had no nerves at all about the workshop and was very happy with how it went so we're feeling all in all positive. Not looking forward to the long wait though - we heard we'll only learn about the outcome mid April!

Pegjes44 · 04/03/2023 12:26

Hi @Nunsmet22
My son said the workshop was ok but wasn’t feeling very excited about it…I think because he was stressed about the interview afterwards.
He was very pleased with his monologue.
The questions part was a little intense I think but he responded well even so 1 or 2 questions I will have answered differently but I guess he’s only 14.

Nunsmet22 · 04/03/2023 12:43

Exactly, @Pegjes44 I don't think they expect polished interview skills! They want to learn more about the kids and get an impression of who they are and I'm sure that comes across in the interview no matter what their answers are exactly.
For my son it wasn't great that he had to perform his monologue before the questions part, because he was so nervous about the questions that he said he couldn't get into character properly. I could see that he wasn't quite as spectacular as at home but again, I thought he was very good.
I do trust the BRIT School in that they know what they're looking for and will make the right decision whichever way it goes.

Hope they both get good news soon! Did either of you have to submit a mid year 9 report? We weren’t asked for it in advance but they asked if we could email it to them?

Nunsmet22 · 04/03/2023 14:25

No @Kezza197 , we weren't asked that. We gave them the reference of our Head of Year, that was it. Which strand are you applying for?

Kezza197 · 04/03/2023 14:27

@Nunsmet22 we gave the head of Year reference, they had the Y8 report but still asked for the Y9 report. She’s applied for VAD.

Kezza197 · 04/03/2023 14:28

She’s a bit worried as the application and portfolio took priority over her half year assessments! (She didn’t do terribly but not as well as in Y8)

Kezza197 · 04/03/2023 14:30

Visual arts and design

Nunsmet22 · 04/03/2023 15:31

My sense is that things vary from strand to strand @Kezza197 . I heard of dance applicants who were asked to bring a book from an academic subject at school in, which the theatre kids didn't need to do. Quite possible that they asked all the VAD applicants to send the mid year report! I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as your DD does by and large ok at school. It's about the kids' artistic talent and enthusiasm mainly, and then I think they want the kids to be committed to their other subjects and their GCSEs as well but my feeling is that they care more about effort, attitude and responsibility than about top grades.

Kezza197 · 04/03/2023 16:58

@Nunsmet22 that’s interesting to hear, thank you. Yes, she works really hard and that was mentioned by all her teachers so 🤞

Nunsmet22 · 04/03/2023 17:09

Sounds like you have nothing to worry about at all @Kezza197 !
Keeping all my fingers crossed for you!!!

Pegjes44 · 04/03/2023 17:57

Hi @Kezza197 We actually give them a mid year report for year 9 because we had it but i think they just wanted year 9 in the beginning.

Pegjes44 · 04/03/2023 18:00

I mean they just wanted year 8 report in the beginning sorry not year 9.

Pegjes44 · 04/03/2023 18:01

Good Luck everyone

Kezza197 · 04/03/2023 18:43

Thanks @Pegjes44 fingers crossed for you and everyone else too. It’s going to be a long wait but at least there is nothing more that can be done!

Kezza197 · 04/03/2023 18:45

Thanks @Nunsmet22 fingers crossed for you too.

Hi! My daughter has applied for year 12 Film & Television Production. She has a workshop on 24/3. It is nice to read all of your messages here. The Brit seems an amazing, inspirational school and I really hope we all get good news. Does anybody know what the intake numbers are? I assume that many students go up from Year 11, so I am unsure how many new students they take on.

downtonupton · 06/03/2023 23:47

at Y10 it's approx 25 for each strand except theatre which has 50 - but not sure how many at Y12

they don't automatically go up from Y11 to Y12 though - they all have to reapply

RBdoctor40 · 07/03/2023 09:51

Is it 25 or 50 places for musical theatre year 10? My DD had a good audition day but I know the likelihood of her getting in is slim.

RBdoctor40 · 09/03/2023 11:36

It is very unclear how many get to the interview/audition stage and what percentage get in from there. if anyone knows more i would be very grateful

Nunsmet22 · 09/03/2023 11:52

Hi @RBdoctor40 , as I said before on this thread, like you I was looking hard for more info on the numbers but wasn't very successful... As far as I'm aware they take 25 kids for musical theatre and 50 for theatre.
I tried to estimate how many applicants were invited for theatre by looking at how many workshops BRIT did in one day. If I'm right (none of this is definitely confirmed, it's more educated guesswork), they had four theatre workshops in one day with +/- 20 kids in each workshop. They do three days like this, meaning they will see around around 240 kids for 50 places, so roughly a 20% chance to get in.
If you know how many workshops they did in one day for MT and how many kids were in each of those workshops you can do the maths. Sorry I don't know more about MT, I focussed my efforts on my DS's chosen strand... ;-)

Good luck!!! Keeping my fingers crossed for your DD!!

RBdoctor40 · 09/03/2023 15:01

@Nunsmet22 thank you. yes it was hard to tell. there were about 20 in my DD's workshop for MT and i am guessing they probably did another 20 in the morning so around 120 for 25 places. i guess it doesn't really matter - she either gets in or she doesn't. she had a good day which is the most important thing. I trust their decision in the end.

Lola123456 · 09/03/2023 18:17

@RBdoctor40 there was more than one day for MT interviews and they are still doing auditions w/c 20/3 which is why we won’t find out until mid April

downtonupton · 09/03/2023 21:02

There are theatre auditions and workshops that week too

Pandorapearl · 10/03/2023 11:04

Does anybody know if they add new classes in year 12, or if the year 12 applicants are relying on people leaving at the end of year 11 to get a place? Just trying to manage expectations here 😬
