Just thought I would start a thread for anyone who has applied for a place at BRIT school

Thanks everyone for the advice whether on here or via private message. We finally got the rejection email this morning and have decided to ask for feedback, draw a line under it and move on. There’s other places to investigate. Best of luck to you all 😁

RS30 · 06/04/2023 18:01

Mixed views on here for appealing, we are not going to. We will see if a place becomes available but think it’s unlikely!

Primrose44 · 06/04/2023 21:04

A friend of DD appealed immediately after her rejection and has already had it declined..
So gutted for her
(Ks4)

Did they write a letter and then the appeal was declined? Still don't know if we'll appeal – will tell DD on Saturday when she's back home : (

I believe so yes.
I think you have to state that somehow you weren't given a fair chance on the day and after the audition she said to DD it went really well...
She was so hopeful bless her.
It's much harder for ks4 I think especially if you don't like your current school...

londonluxie · 07/04/2023 07:30

Thanks @Primrose44 …so how competitive is KS5 music? I think more so, right? How many spaces are there and is it still 10% for out of area?

I have a feeling that the 10% intake for out of catchment goes across the strands which probably allows them a bit of leeway.
I'd say they were an insanely talented bunch all of DDs peers having seen a couple of shows now.
One girl she knows got in from reserve.
I don't know if it is more competitive really.. Stuart Worden school head will say at the open evenings that it's harder to get in at KS4 but when you think not all will stay I don't think so.
At KS4 there are just the 25
But at KS5 some will change strand or go to other colleges leaving space from that cohort plus another 25 places.
They also "kicked out a few trouble makers"(quote from another parent)

londonluxie · 08/04/2023 19:15

So DD wasn't too disappointed (less than me, I think) – a relief. Probably will opt for feedback rather than appeal.

Thinking ahead, for KS5 what are some additional good/similar schools to the BRIT (even independent)? For example Tring Park seems very pressured since they emphasise academics as much as vocational training. DD is academic but not sure if she could/would want to do both at such intensity. (We're on the Met Line west of London.)

For music or musical theatre?
Or acting ?
So glad to hear she was ok.

Would you consider funded and fee paying?

For music (vocals). Would consider anything including weekly boarding. Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge : )

London School of Performing Arts is at Abbey Wood on the Elizabeth Line

Primrose44 · 09/04/2023 08:34

@londonluxie if it's music you want then consider ELAM.
It's basically like Brit with fewer strands but they do contemporary music btech which is funded. Also they include English and Maths (more business related) in the curriculum as they want to equip their students to be savvy and articulate when negotiating deals for example.
I believe you can go to BIMM at 16 but this is not funded.Similarly Tring do contemporary music but again not funded and you'd have to pay for boarding.
LCPA in Abbey Wood is MT not music but is funded.
Base performing arts is new, not funded unless they offer you a scholarship but again this is MT and dance not music.
Also consider Robbie Williams school LMA(funded)

Primrose44 · 09/04/2023 08:38

Actually @londonluxie looks like btechs are only Liverpool now for btechs at LMA

AnonymouseGCSE · 09/04/2023 13:23

For Music 6th Form, the options in London are basically:
ELAM
BRIT
Rhythm Studio in Lambeth
BIMM - this is one year only and is £7k in London, 2 years and free on their other campuses.

All these do one form or another of L3 Extended Diploma. ELAM you have to continue with English & Maths as well (either an A Level, or their own course, or retakes if you have failed the GCSEs)

Thesoundofmusic23 · 09/04/2023 20:55

Also depending on where you are out west you could consider ACM in Guildford.

londonluxie · 10/04/2023 08:24

Thanks so much, will start researching!

TomaytoORTomahto · 10/04/2023 11:28

Just be aware that ACM fills its places VERY quickly. So visit soon and apply early if it
feels like a good fit.

truelove · 12/04/2023 10:58

For those on the reserve list, had a very quick response today from the admissions team - submitted an enquiry form via the website. There are 19 places on the reserve list (assume that's just for KS5 MT). There is no order - the course Director instructs who to contact should a place be declined. We know of 2 who have had offers who will be going elsewhere - let's hope there are 17 others! We have a friend who was reserve for Dance a couple of years ago who got offered a different strand which seems to be another possibility (though DS has said in this situation he would go elsewhere as MT is his passion). Any other reserve list updates/info?

RS30 · 12/04/2023 15:52

Thanks for the update @truelove. I think we will be the same she really wants MT, guess it’s another waiting game for us all now.

truelove · 12/04/2023 16:31

@RS30 I forgot to ask about in/out catchment lists (sorry!) but suspect they try to replace like with like? 19 seemed an odd number but I guess not everyone accepts the reserve list place or they may have already had movement (here I go again speculating!😂)

RS30 · 12/04/2023 16:35

@truelove no worries, think I will contact them anyway as wondered if can request feedback if on reserve list?

truelove · 12/04/2023 16:43

I think you can - just not if you're going to appeal but I would check rather than take my word for it. Btw, the reply I had also said they've done very well to be on the reserve list as these places are essentially a yes, they just don't have enough places. It said sometimes there isn't any movement until the summer if people are waiting for exam results before declining a place.

RS30 · 12/04/2023 17:03

Summer will probably be too late for us as we have added complication of finding her accommodation! Thanks though for letting me know, I think they’ve all done amazing to even get this far.

truelove · 12/04/2023 17:05

Oh nightmare! Let's hope there's movement before summer then x
