Hello fellow parents, Just wanted to start a thread on RGS Guildford, which our children will be sitting on 11th January 2020. Not long now.

Good luck! We went through this last year. My son is happy in the first form now. Would be happy to help with questions etc.

Sophie42 · 26/12/2019 23:18

What style of English creative writing story was it last year?

OP posts:
GU24Mum · 27/12/2019 09:55

I'm pretty sure it was to continue the story from the comprehension passage - which meant that our "adapt to most things" ideas didn't work!

Sophie42 · 28/12/2019 21:02

Oh no, that would be a disaster, my son doesn't like those! Was there a choice of another story or just that? Very grateful for all your help. Very pleased to hear your children got in and have settled well.

Yes, it was to continue the story from the comprehension extract, and no, there was no other option. Doesn't mean it will be the same this year though!

Bin85 · 03/01/2020 12:50

Any idea how many candidates for how many places anyone ?

Does anyone remember anything else about the exam? What the comprehension was on, was the reasoning just verbal or anything about the maths?

OP posts:
Bin85 · 05/01/2020 19:48

Look for last year's thread?

Auroborea · 06/01/2020 07:24

Last year 380 sat the exam for 130 places. The reasoning was just verbal. Maths was multiple choice. My son was fine with maths and English (comprehension was about a Chinese girl) and found VR the trickiest on time (a long paper with lots of questions).

Sophie42 · 10/01/2020 13:49

Thanks for all your notes. Tomorrow is the day!

My son is sitting this exam today too. It's a pretty brutal day at 10 years old...but wishing them all well!

Auroborea · 11/01/2020 14:44

Good luck to all your boys. My son came out last year having quite enjoyed it and very impressed with the food - I think the process is harder on the parents!

sazzy5 · 11/01/2020 21:45

Good luck all. The process is definitely harder on the parents 🤣. You either want scholarship letters or nothing until mid February. Fingers crossed.

123EyesOnMe · 13/01/2020 13:22

Well we're only 2 days in to 'The Big Wait' and I'm struggling not to obsess!
Feedback from DS on exams themselves was ok...but I think it's pretty hard for him to gauge really (unless it's impossibly hard or super simple). He has his heart set on RGS (as do I, to be completely honest) and I so want the opportunity for him. If interviews start from 21st Jan, then I guess those initial letters/emails must come out pretty soon...along with the first lot of rejections. Horrid.

PoshDee · 13/01/2020 21:00

I wish everyone the very best. It won't be long. All the bestSmile

logfire2020 · 13/01/2020 23:29

The wait starts... how did everyone find the day?

Mine loved how all the boys were made to feel at ease. Maths was expectedly a challenge but doable and he finished. English always more a challenge for DS.

He came home happy but tired. So suspect actually OK. Weirdly felt less DS's sitting this year, compared to schools closer to London.

I'm not obsessing , the sorting hat will sort... that's what I tell DS as it seems to help :-)

123EyesOnMe · 14/01/2020 10:35

My DS enjoyed it too and said how nice the other boys were...like yours tired afterwards (bu then I'd be knackered so not surprised!!).
English ok - one text much harder than the other he felt.
Maths - ok with last few questions really tough.
VR - ok if slightly tricker language than he was used you.

So hard to tell...so much depends on how every individual did on the day. I can't believe there are any boys even taking the exam who aren't bright - surely you wouldn't put your child in for the test?? So I guess it's about 1:4 or 5 boys per place.

TaupeAndTeal · 14/01/2020 11:19

My son said the English comprehension was harder than the others he sat. Other than that he seemed fairly upbeat.

ErmieMum · 14/01/2020 12:14

Another anxious mum here.... DS said it was all 'ok' so that tells me nothing! He did manage to finish everything so that's something.....

BooRadley7 · 14/01/2020 12:30

Looking at last years thread... am I right that we can expect the 2nd interview invite emails from Ms Short around Thursday 16th Jan?

BooRadley7 · 14/01/2020 12:33

Lol, Kathryn Sweet, not Short! Grin

123EyesOnMe · 14/01/2020 12:44

I thought this Thurs for interview emails too...but there does seem to be some variation year on year.
Does anyone actually know how many boys actually sat the exam last week?

BooRadley7 · 14/01/2020 12:59

@123EyesOnMe I have no idea on RGS. My DS sat Reed’s too and heard about 600 boys sat their exam...

GU24Mum · 14/01/2020 13:08

Last year the callback interviews definitely came out on the Thursday afternoon at least for us! Good luck to all - I am feeling so much less stressed than I was this time last year and don't envy you all going through the process.
