Hello fellow parents, Just wanted to start a thread on RGS Guildford, which our children will be sitting on 11th January 2020. Not long now.

OP posts:
AtiBati · 28/02/2020 19:20

Amazing afternoon at RGS today. Got all my questions answered and met the loveliest teachers. So pleased that DS is going to join in September. He cannot wait.
Do any of you live locally (within walking distance) of the school?

R272727 · 28/02/2020 22:14

hi do many boys commute from Kingston or cobham to the school or is it mainly locals?

GU24Mum · 29/02/2020 00:50

Kingston is not great at all by train but some will definitely come from Cobham. The biggest contingent are Guildford and a radius of a few miles outside but lots more from all sorts of places.

noidea02 · 29/02/2020 09:15

I have a son further up the schools. Loads of children come from Cobham and other places o the same line. I don’t know about Kingston but my son has friends who travel on the train from Surbiton - same line as Cobham

Oldtimer2020 · 29/02/2020 10:50

In my DS’s class about 5 of the 25 live in Guildford, the rest from all over. Haslemere/Woking/Walton/Farnham etc.

Pyrfwondering · 29/02/2020 12:30

@AtiBati it was a good afternoon, wasn't it?! So much information being shared by the teachers and other parents.

@R272727, if you decide to take the offer for your DS, there's another afternoon, end- June, where the form classes can get to know each other and parents can upload all contact details/commuting routes to an app and start to identify travel groups. Mrs Sweet cam tell you more. It's a shame you didn't get chance to ask your questions in person, yesterday.

BooRadley7 · 29/02/2020 23:14

Our DS will be travelling from Cobham... 😬 Will definitely do a few dry runs into Guildford before September 😂

Would be great to know of any other Ds’s going to 1st form, that would be making the same journey from Cobham & Stoke D'Abernon.

villagegirlatheart · 01/03/2020 19:12

@AtiBati we weren't at the open afternoon but my son will be walking to school.

Pyrfwondering · 03/03/2020 13:29

does anyone know which uniform shop the RGS things need to come from?

GU24Mum · 03/03/2020 14:40

The blazer, ties and jumpers (if you want one) come from Stevensons in Burpham. Standard things (trousers, socks and shirts) can come from anywhere and the sports kit needs to be ordered from Tacklebag. There will be a stand at new boys' day with sample sizes for the sports kit and a handout with a guide to what size the average (!) boy will need. There's a second hand uniform sale too.

Pyrfwondering · 03/03/2020 16:14

thanks @GU24Mum!

Hi Sophie, hoping everything went well for your son. My son will be taking RGS test in Jan2021, I would like to know if your son remembers -
1.how many Q’s were for VR & Maths & were the boys able to complete in time ?

  1. English comprehension was easy/tough
  2. And for creative writing did they continued the story from the passage or was there any choices to choose to write on ?
  3. Was all test paper based or computer based test?
  4. Interview- Did they discuss social issues or discussed any topic/issue to support with their own argument/views ?
I will appreciate if any other parent would give their input on the same...

Hi all - we have been lucky enough to receive and offer from 3 schools this year - I love RGS but was just hoping to get some parent feedback on rgs please

Lonestar123 · 14/02/2021 14:11

@AtiBati @Pyrfwondering @BooRadley7 sorry to jump on your old thread. We have an RGS offer for this year and we’re struggling to make a decision. Any feedback from your perspective would be so welcome. Are your boys happy there? Thank you! x

GuerrillaShoppa · 14/02/2021 15:50

DS started in Year 7 at RGS in September and is very happy although the learning provision is currently all online.

He certainly enjoyed his first term at the school IRL (and the sport and the lunches) before all of that was cut short. It's really difficult to give anyone much of a steer on the basis of a single term of real life schooling. It may be worth posting on the same RGS 11+ thread a year back to see if you can make contact with current Year 8 parents, who may be able to give you the benefit of their experience . Sorry that I can't be of more help.

Lonestar123 · 14/02/2021 16:54

@GuerrillaShoppa thank you!

Pyrfwondering · 14/02/2021 17:03

@Lonestar123 DS is very happy at RGS. DS has made friends and enjoyed all the sport, music and extra-curricular clubs. The online teaching has tried to build in practical activities for Science, Art, Music and Drama, which has kept it interesting.

It has been an extraordinary year, but my feeling is RGS have prioritised the Yr 7 boys' mental health - shortening the day to give them screen breaks after online learning, reducing homework and encouraging them with physical activity challenges to get outside. Conversations at the dinner table tell us that they're covering interesting stuff during lessons and DS is enjoying learning.

Good luck with making your choice. The best I can say is DS is happy and we don't regret choosing RGS Smile

hopefulone1 · 14/02/2021 17:06

Thank you

Lonestar123 · 14/02/2021 17:25

Thanks so much @Pyrfwondering, that’s really helpful. I suspect we may live in the same village :) :)

samade · 18/03/2021 11:58

Hello everyone. I would like to know if there is any parent(s) whose son attends Royal Grammar School (RGS), Guildford and live in the Reading, Berkshire area. Is there a collective transportation organised by parents to take the boys from Reading to Guildford and back everyday? I am asking so I know if I would save myself some 90 minutes drive (to/fro) RGS. From Reading, it is 45 minutes drive to RGS. I believe it will be helpful to avoid that aspect of "school-run". Thank you.
