Hello fellow parents, Just wanted to start a thread on RGS Guildford, which our children will be sitting on 11th January 2020. Not long now.

OP posts:
Auroborea · 15/02/2020 18:01

It's rugby in the autumn, hockey in the spring and a choice of cricket or athletics in the summer term as the main games sports. There are also lots of other sports/matches happening in addition: e.g. cross country, swimming, sailing. Plus multiple clubs and societies, sporty, musical, academic, social, etc. They have a clubs fair in the beginning of the school year where the boys can go and learn more and sign up to things. Football is played in the sixth form.

Auroborea · 15/02/2020 18:02

Cross-post!

goobledygok · 15/02/2020 18:52

Thanks @Honeybees4. Seems like we all missed that they started playing football in 2016 Shock

Pyrfwondering · 15/02/2020 21:30

Great that none of the DSs have to give up football, after all

AXAMUSHY · 17/02/2020 11:55

Hello all - I am new to the list and my DS has an offer for Sept 2020 :-) - Does anyone know if they have a basketball club or is one being planned.?

GU24Mum · 17/02/2020 12:59

They definitely have a house basketball competition as my son had an e-mail about joining in but as he's short and hasn't played before, we politely declined!

Hopeful201 · 17/02/2020 14:56

There is definitely a basketball club at the school.

AXAMUSHY · 17/02/2020 18:32

Thank you so much. I could not see Basketball anywhere so there was a little panic in my house!

R272727 · 18/02/2020 00:55

Hi how many on average come from private school prep? 25% 50% etc?
Do many of the boys know each other when they join?

R272727 · 18/02/2020 01:33

Also where do boys go for swimming please Smile

GU24Mum · 18/02/2020 07:32

There is usually a chunk from Lanesborough and a group from some of the closer prep schools like Cranmore etc. But there are also lots who are single boys from their schools and a good number (though I don't know the specifics from state schools - and usually a group from places like South Farnham).

The classes are done by language choice (French or Spanish) and then alphabetically so typically there are three classes doing Spanish and two doing French.

Mine did have boys from his school in his class but not ones he was friends with and he's made friends with lots of the others really quickly.

Im pretty sure the boys swim at the Spectrum - I should know but they are taken on a coach so I've only taken a passing interest in which pool they go to!! They go once a week for half a term each term.

Oldtimer2020 · 18/02/2020 08:03

Up to 50% state, 50% private split. Though in my son’s year was more like 35% state school. Obvs at 13+ it’s all private school.

They take from schools all over the area, a lot of boys are one of a handful from their school or the only one (my DS was). Lots of mixing and he made friends really quickly.

Swimming at the Spectrum in first form only during their PE lesson.

All these question though, maybe ask at the Offer Holder’s afternoon to get up to date info,

Auroborea · 18/02/2020 08:41

Yes, swimming is still at the Spectrum, alternating each half term with PE.

LearningJourney · 18/02/2020 11:32

Is anyone here going to the Offer Holders' afternoon??

Honeybees4 · 18/02/2020 12:04

I am ..

Jugglingact101 · 18/02/2020 12:14

Me too

AXAMUSHY · 18/02/2020 13:38

Yes planning to. Is it just for parents or can we bring DS.

LearningJourney · 18/02/2020 13:58

I think that you can bring DS as well - some may have particular questions if considering two offers...

begin2020 · 19/02/2020 23:43

Hi, when is the offer holders afternoon being held?

R272727 · 20/02/2020 04:51

Thanks for all the helpful responses. Do the boys study Latin in first year?

GU24Mum · 20/02/2020 11:27

R272727 - yes, the boys study Latin in Y7/First Form and either French or Spanish. The school website is pretty good about curriculum details for the definitive position in case it changes from what our boys have done!

Pyrfwondering · 20/02/2020 12:37

@begin2020, the offer holder's afternoon date was on the offer letter... it's a week tomorrow (28th) 😊

ceeceeanne · 20/02/2020 12:45

Wish there was a thread like this for other RGS schools 😢

AXAMUSHY · 25/02/2020 06:16

Morning. Looking forward to seeing seeing you guys and your DS on Friday at the school for the Offer Holders Afternoon.

Pyrfwondering · 25/02/2020 10:14

should we all wear a flower in our hair to recognize each other as MumsNetters? Smile
