Hello fellow parents, Just wanted to start a thread on RGS Guildford, which our children will be sitting on 11th January 2020. Not long now.

OP posts:
HampshireGirl123 · 17/01/2020 10:56

Dr Cox said no news is good news though. I was definitely under the impression that the nos come out quickly. They couldn’t send out the no and yes letters on the same day, that would just be cruel. Imagine the fear opening that letter!

Pyrfwondering · 17/01/2020 11:02

are everyone's interview e-mail invites for Tues 21st? I'm just trying to figure out if the interview e-mails are sent and lining up with the interview dates... like anyone for next Tues got them yesterday... anyone getting them today, would be invited for Weds morning... maybe anyone invited for next Friday's session finds out on Mon 20th?

silence is hard to live with, once other people start to get comms :-(

TaupeAndTeal · 17/01/2020 11:07

@Pyrfwondering I don't know how they are doing it but I would have thought that children being called back for English or for maths would be grouped together so that the relevant subject teachers could meet them.

Disclaimer - I have no idea, but that would be a logical approach.

Tinytempa · 17/01/2020 11:26

@Pyrfwondering we recieved email yesterday and interview isn't until Friday 31st for Maths.

AtiBati · 17/01/2020 11:49

Email received yesterday for Wednesday! 😩

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 12:25

R272727....I only know about RGS, sorry.

HampshireGirl123...cruel, yes. Sad They do in fact send out yes and no letters to arrive on 14th Feb...but only for the no post-interview candidates.

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 12:27

AtiBati...look at it this way, your odds have significantly improved having an interview.
Your DS now has a 50% chance of getting a place. Without the interview he had a 25% (roughly) chance...

Pyrfwondering · 17/01/2020 12:44

@123eyesonme, thanks for making some of us feel 50% worse...

anyone seen a scholarship test invitation? Congrats if your DS has got through to that stage!

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 12:46

Pyrfwondering...apologies, that was not my intention at all.
I am one of those people with no email too...

Sunfish · 17/01/2020 12:48

I'm in for the long wait as we applied for 13+ entry...

AtiBati · 17/01/2020 13:06

@123EyesOnMe my baby is going in for both English and VR! Does that still give him a 50% chance? Not sure about that one at all!!! 🧐

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 13:15

@AtiBati....hmm, basically yes. 50% chance of yes afterwards; 50% chance of no... Which is damn impressive given the level of competition. These kids are the top few % in the country.
Truth is, pretty much all of the boys who sat the exam would thrive at the school, but there is a cap on numbers. I'll keep my fingers firmly crossed for your boy on Wednesday.

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 13:21

To slightly change the subject...
Which other schools have your DS applied to....and is RGS or another your first choice?

Mantapeace · 17/01/2020 13:45

@AtiBati mine also English and VR on Wednesday. No idea but would have thought 2 subjects worse odds than only one ☹️

Mantapeace · 17/01/2020 13:48

@123EyesOnMe did the 17% 10% numbers come from previous years? Was wondering about numbers/ odds of yes after interview..

AtiBati · 17/01/2020 13:58

@123EyesOnMe RGS is the only private school we have applied for. If it’s not gonna be RGS it will be George abbot for us. RGS is our closest school and it was the school where we immediately felt we could see our son thrive. We saw a few other private schools, but didn’t have the same feeling. It’s all or nothing for us I guess.

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 14:06

@Mantapeace...the number are an educated guess to the split. The facts and assumptions in a nutshell:

  • 396 boys applied (fact from school office)
  • 110 places (assumption based previous years and a suggested range of 110-130)
  • 60-80 boys interviewed after the exam (fact from Dr Cox on exam day)
  • 50% of those interviewed are offered a place (anecdotal evidence only from past years)

If we assume these numbers are broadly accurate, then:

  • Between 30-40 boys will get a place after interview (which is 7.5-10% of boys who sat the exam & 27-36% of boys offered places)
  • And therefore, 70-80 boys will get a place from exam alone (17-25% of boys who sat the exam & 63-72% of boys offered places)

Does that help at all....?
There are a few assumptions but I think the general split of numbers is broadly accurate.

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 14:07

@AtiBati Exactly the same for us...not George Abbott as we aren't in Guildford, but same overall feeling and situation otherwise.

ErmieMum · 17/01/2020 14:13

Don't forget that some of those 396 will be for 13 plus entry so won't be taking some of those places for next sept Smile

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 14:18

Ooohh...interesting! That does change things a little. My misunderstanding, I thought the 396 figure was 11+ only...hadn't appreciated it included 13+ too.

Anyone have any idea how many of the 396 were sitting for 13+ entry??

ErmieMum · 17/01/2020 14:21

I may be wrong but all the 11 and 13 sat the same exam together on Saturday so if it's a total figure of boys who attended then you can count a load out for September entry as they will go at 13

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 14:25

You've cheered me up enormously @ErmieMum ! Grin
Would love to know how many sit for 13+ entry....hoping someone comes along with some inside intelligence on the matter.... Wink

ErmieMum · 17/01/2020 14:30

We are 13+ and am sure our odds are lower as I doubt there are many places going for that! I would be keen to know how many went for 13+ but I know the numbers are dwindling for that each year according to Dr Cox

Sunfish · 17/01/2020 14:52

2 from my DS school sat for 13+ (including mine) and one went for 11+. From the open days they said that the entry at 13+ is normally placed in its own form group - so I presume whatever a form size is...

We've only sat the RGS exam this year.

123EyesOnMe · 17/01/2020 15:41

Someone with more knowledge or older children at RGS will confirm for sure but I think class sizes are about 25...

I vaguely remember the comment that boys entering at 13+ are in their own form group too...and it does make sense.
So that would suggest that at the very least 25 of the 396 were hoping for 13+....and most likely quite a few more...
Wish someone knew the numbers....
