I want to confess my love of the Music That Dare Not Speak It's Name..

I was listening this morning to some Randy Travis, and practically weeping with pleasure. The voice, the music, the wordplay, the depth of the storytelling..

does anyone else care to join me in spreading the Gospel and Praisin'?

Where are you Cappuccino?

Oh I love all this kind of music!

It just makes me want to sip a big glass of wine and RELAX!

Huge apologies in advance for the dire (15 second?) adverts that run prior to start of the following videos, but these were best versions I could find. With that disclaimer....

If you want some kick-ass country by a rockin' redneck woman, give this a listen:

Ballad with powerful lyrics (and dodgy video salute to former stars of the Grand Ole Opry!)

A soulful duet with Country Music 'royalty'

great voice cali! It's a hard row to hoe, though, being British and country, no?

And I can't get anyone to go with me.

Anyone going from here?

onebatmother · 27/03/2008 18:28

Oh, great thread!! I'm going to out myself as having been to see Kris Kristofferson on Tuesday night and he was fabulous. It was the first night of a tour so go if you can. Great value for money, he performed for two hrs, which ain't bad when you're 71yo. It was just him and his guitar, no gizmos, gimmicks or even a stool to sit on. And, something I have never seen before, he came on and sang with his support act, Roddy Hart who is a young performer along the lines of Rufus Wainright and Teddy Thomson. I made dh buy me his album.

Earlybird · 27/03/2008 18:39

onebatmother - hmmm....don't know why.

I clicked and they play for me. The only thing I can think of is that the clips are from an American cable telly station that might now allow viewing from computers based outside the US. That happened to me last week when I tried to play something from BBCi - a blurb popped up to say 'due to international copyright law, viewing is limited to those based in the UK...

moondog · 27/03/2008 18:48

Was Kriss K good then? He's looking pretty damned good for an old gimmer. (71)
Cal, lol at pillocks wearing toy guns. Hilarious.

He was, Moondog. He'd be the first to admit he's not technically as proficient as others in his field but the emotion that came with his songs was wonderful. I had tears in my eyes during some of them. And it was great to realise that even at 71 you can still have the fire in your belly to want to right the wrongs in our world.

moondog · 27/03/2008 19:06

Sue,arent' you in Lagos?

suedonim · 27/03/2008 19:55

We're back in Scotland for two weeks leave, MD. It's been mighty cold, complete with snow, I'm almost looking forward to going back to Ng.

onebatmother · 27/03/2008 19:55

er, Nigerian Country is possibly an even harder row to hoe...

WendyWeber · 27/03/2008 20:06

Oh, suedonim, I am

I have lurved KK since about 1973 and I have had a CD of one of his old albums in my car for years.

Not only is he swoon-worthy for 71 but he has a teenage son

"I think between us, Bill Clinton and I have settled any lingering myths about the brilliance of Rhodes scholars."

He is fab!

southeastastra · 27/03/2008 20:14

i do like alot of country, just getting into it. like the bob harris country show.

the paul gambaccini us top ten show has alot of really dire country though, the lyrics always seem to be about 'just remember she's still my baby' (father being introduced to a daughter's bf) and that other one, where a child died in the same class as the singers child.

some of the new stuff is a bit weepy inducing.
