I want to confess my love of the Music That Dare Not Speak It's Name..

I was listening this morning to some Randy Travis, and practically weeping with pleasure. The voice, the music, the wordplay, the depth of the storytelling..

does anyone else care to join me in spreading the Gospel and Praisin'?

Where are you Cappuccino?

I go wherever you go Onebat [stalker emoticon]...

She's at the 02 Centre in July. Seriously excited about it. Also 9-5 is one of my all time favourite songs. Ooooh. Am making a playlist for my sister and just realised that needs to go on it.

My sister is having another baby and I'm wondering if Jolene would be an acceptable name suggestion.

margoandjerry · 27/03/2008 11:44

Earlybird that sounds interesting...off to Amazon toot sweet.

Indith · 27/03/2008 11:45

Aha found Magnolia Street

Earlybird · 27/03/2008 11:46

Oh that should be fun. Seems Dolly is becoming a prime example of what happens when you have too much plastic surgery. Still thankfully it hasn't changed her voice.

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 11:48

sound is iffy but here

skyatnight · 27/03/2008 11:48

Onebat, I love Alison Krauss. And I love the Dolly Parton Grass is Blue. So sentimental, love the sad ones, love the harmonies. I was listening to some of this when I was in labour (but the midwife insisted on switching it off!!) Love Gillian Welch, 'Miss Ohio'.

I am not very knowledgeable but generally like anything folky, folk-pop, folk-rock, bluegrass, not country so much. I wish I had time to follow up my music interests but I will look up some of the names on this thread.

Indith · 27/03/2008 11:51

Skyatnight. Stick radio 2 on and listen to Bob Harris on his late night Saturday show. Add most of what he plays to your Amazon wish list

moondog · 27/03/2008 11:51

I like Shelby Lynne (listened to her a lot when first pregnant so good memories) but at taking on Dusty.Dusty is sacred.

onebatmother · 27/03/2008 11:52

blimey shelby lynne does dusty springfield. That makes me feel ...anxious.

The Late Great Keith Whitley pissing on Ronan Keating

and this one more shite recording but the car wheels on a gravel road cd is worth listening too

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 27/03/2008 11:57

Mr ChickenCaesar never lets me forget how much i used to go to cowboy bars in my youth.

i did a kick-ass line dance (way back before old people did them) and 2-step.

not really up on the music since i moved to the UK but some of the oldies i love are:

Alison kraus
Martina McBride (wild angels album has some AMAZING songs)
LoneStar (not that baby i'm amazed shit) (the best 2-stepping song ever)
BR5-49

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 11:57

maybe it says more about me than country music when i spent three months in a mental h i listened to this cd over and over lol

moondog · 27/03/2008 11:58

Oh Zippi!
(Hope that is not in to poor taste!)

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 27/03/2008 11:58
zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 12:01

she sounds a bit less stoned here relatively normal in fact

not a lot to do in psychiatric hospitals except listen to music

Indith · 27/03/2008 12:01

Aw don't worry digby. When I was a kid I used to go to sleep listening to John Denver and almmost always fell asleep by the time the tape had got to half way through this

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 12:02

i would have fantasised about going in cowboy bars i just have to put up with the unforgiven and once upon a time in mexico

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 12:02

i dont think you shared too much lol

moondog · 27/03/2008 12:03

I like the Lonestar one Digby.

onebatmother · 27/03/2008 12:03

God, I'm going to have to spend this evening following up everyone's links.

Here's a couple more. Alison Moorer (nearly too alt for me, but still lovely) missing Gram Parsons

and singing Alabama Song

Thanks Indith. Will do.

moondog · 27/03/2008 12:07

Ah Gram.
Listen to Sticky Fingers by the Stones. His influence is all over it.

SixSpotBurnet · 27/03/2008 12:09

Anyone know Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris? Very haunting. True country/bluegrass types hated it at the time though apparently.

Earlybird · 27/03/2008 12:09

Aren't Shelby Lynne and Alison Moorer sisters? Or did I make that up.....

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 12:10

what is bluegrass anyway

this is clearly not mny area of expertise
