I Love Country Music, I Love Bluegrass

I want to confess my love of the Music That Dare Not Speak It's Name..

I was listening this morning to some Randy Travis, and practically weeping with pleasure. The voice, the music, the wordplay, the depth of the storytelling..

does anyone else care to join me in spreading the Gospel and Praisin'?

Where are you Cappuccino?

thought it was a character in heartbeat

VictorianSqualor · 27/03/2008 12:10

Mary Gaulthier is a good one if people like Lucinda Williams and Kathleen Edwards.

onebatmother · 27/03/2008 12:11

margo, I would so start a Jolene babyname thread.

Zippi - just realized that I do know Lucinda Williams! But I think Tammy is more my style..

I like the Lonestar one too Digby. Have avoided them so far bcs I thought they were going to be a bit too .. Austin for me (do like alt, but not as much as pure country) But I like it..

VictorianSqualor · 27/03/2008 12:14

This thread has just made me burn her to CD actually for my labour bag.
Thanks OBM

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 12:16

this brings back long buried memoroies blanket on the ground she is so cool

onebatmother · 27/03/2008 12:18

Mr Bat says "Bluegrass is acoustic country music with - usually - no drums, originating in the Appalachian region of the Southern States of America. Named after Bill Monroe's band The Bluegrass Boys - Kentucky being the Bluegrass state. Standard lineup: fiddle, banjo, mandolin, double bass, guitar, and 3 or 4-part harmony singing, and characterized by presence of high tenor male voice, often referred to as 'the high lonesome sound'. Greatest exponents of high lonesome sound would include Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley."

I thought I was alone. It's like posting a thread about having 3 vaginas and finding that all your favourite people are the same.

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 12:31

i like steve earle too

ellis nunit one in fact the soundtrack to dead man walking is pretty good and the long road is one of my favourites ever

VictorianSqualor · 27/03/2008 12:34

You have 3 vaginas Swedes?

SixSpotBurnet · 27/03/2008 12:34

Steve Earle v v good. He has been married about seven times, talk about a triumph of hope over expectation or summat...

East Yorks? Me sis and bil live there.

Swedes · 27/03/2008 12:34

Onebat - York is in North Yorkshire.

SixSpotBurnet · 27/03/2008 12:34

I was too polite to mention that, VictorianSqualor.

onebatmother · 27/03/2008 12:34

Swedes! For crying out loud! Et tu?

zippi did you know that Alison Moorer is married to Steve Earle now? Am slightly creeped out by the age gap..

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 27/03/2008 12:43

just asking cos i am seeing someone 20 years younger so i am just 90% creepy rofl

LimeInTheCoconut · 27/03/2008 12:43

Oooh yes. I was raised on a diet of Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Crystal Gayle, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris

Since I've known DP he's introduced me to some newer artists - Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Shania Twain (pre-pop Shania, I hasten to add), Lonestar, Alan Jackson.

When we went to the states, we just had Country Radio on all the time and came back with loads of albums of people we'd never heard of before.

Anyone else got the Trio albums? Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. Spine tinglingly good.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 27/03/2008 12:45

I never realised Kris Kristofferson was a real person.

Too much fAMILY GUY.

Bobbiewickham · 27/03/2008 12:46

My dh is learning bluegrass banjo.

It's growing on me.
